Nick being lesbian-bait is so funny to me because it’s so goddamn real. This is literally what would happen.

He’s so gentle and safe and empathetic, and he's good-looking in a non-threatening kind of way (I do mean that as a compliment). He’s not a Nice GuyTM, he’s a genuinely good guy while still being Acceptably Masculine for girls who are trying to Be Straight. He will never intentionally hurt them, he will always treat them with respect and kindness, he won’t resent them for not being sure. He’s also fairly clueless and has big demi-sexual energy, so much less pressure all around.

Of course the closeted “not ready to admit I like girls” girls go for him. And of course he’s part of the reason they realise they’re gay*. If they’re not into Nick Nelson, they can be pretty sure they’re just not into men.

*Okay so it didn’t work for Imogen, because she went on to try the other “I’m straight I promise” approach which is “date the worst guy you can find”. But in her defence, she and Nick never actually went out. If Charlie hadn’t got there first, I think Nick and Imogen would probably have ended up going out, and it would have been very sweet in an Alex Strangelove kind of way. Except unlike in Alex Strangelove, both of them would eventually realise they’re actually massive queer nerds instead of straight cool people.

Thinking about John gets stuck with Noel (and is trying to find Arthur) AUs and realized it fits perfectly with how in arkayne fics John will just get shut up or end up asleep or "is not there" or some hand wavey way to not have John there (I am not criticizing this I love this idea it's a) a fantastic way to have Arthur and Kayne talking alone and also b) emphasizes that yeah Kayne's really powerful did you forget he can put the king in yellow in people's heads for fun? sure he can remove/ pause him too. Great framing device and a way to show the power imbalance).

Instead of John being asleep or something he's just sent out on a playdate with Noel while the adults (a mortal and a malevolent entity) talk. Kayne's sending half of a great Old One to go play with his friend while he tries to seduce/ vivisect/ some secret third thing his best friend/ partner/ head mate/ that rascally human they both like. Really, he's doing John a favor. He gets to hang out with a friend! And Arthur's not having to be a go between! Go out on a date or something! See a movie or whatever you crazy kids like these days!

John, of course, is panicking because Arthur's trapped with Kayne and he's trapped in Noel's head and he needs to do everything he can to not hurt Noel because the King already hurt him so much but also he needs to find Arthur and Noel doesn't need him to describe everything but he needs to talk through things and he's really not having a good time. Noel's also not having a great time because there's another part of the King in his head and he's trying not to think about that and is trying to focus on finding Arthur and not think about how sometimes when John talks - either too soothingly or with too much anger- it sounds like the King.

Arthur's not having a good time either. The only one having a good time here is Kayne, though he is a bit annoyed that no one else seems to be appreciating his thoughtfulness.

the spirit, the patient, and ep 3 charlie meeting each other. the spirit would crack patient charlie open (for funsies) and comment on how he's all slime just like HE is and only then does the patient have the revelation that they're identical, and the conclusion he draws is that they MUST be long lost twins. the spirit (a 200+ year old undead beetlejuice rip off) does not question this line of logic and is stoked to not be the only slime guy.

charlie largely does not get involved until spirit and patient look at him and go hey. this guy kinda looks like us too. but they can't be sure until they tear HIM open, obviously. scooby-doo chase scene ensues.

things i love about heartstopper 7/?

“Do you ever feel like you’re doing things because everyone else is? And you’re scared to change, or do something that might confuse or surprise people? Your real personality has been, like, buried inside you for a really long time. I guess that’s how I’ve been feeling recently.” ('Friend')

I don’t know if it’s intentional, but for me masculinity is a consistent theme throughout this story. These boys are all navigating the morass of patriarchal masculinities and it’s always there in the background as a pressure on all of them. Some of them navigate it well, some very badly, and most are just messy and struggling the way the rest of us are.

“Some of the rugby guys are nice.” “Even they just stood there. I'm tired of all of them.” ('Bully')

I talked about this a bit in an earlier post, but I wanted to make this its own separate point. There’s a consistent unspoken theme showing how hegemonic masculinity, the kind Harry and his hangers on are doing, is toxic not just for the people being bullied but for the bullies as well.

Nick’s life gets much harder when he starts pushing back against it, and it takes a lot of courage (and some fuck ups) for him to get there. But we see how much better things get for him when he does. He finds new, loving, genuine friendships and he gets to be himself, and it’s hard - “I’m just so angry at myself for not seeing that all my friends suck” - but it’s good.

David, Harry, Ben - all these guys keep clinging to hegemonic masculinity (even though Harry does start to change a bit) and it’s clear they’re not doing well. They’re not just shitty people, they’re also more lonely and miserable. Yeah, they have privilege/power over the guys who have more healthy masculinities, and the story doesn’t pull punches about that. It's clear that pushing back or being different can really hurt. But Harry's and Ben's and David's privilege/power comes at a cost. I love that the story shows us this consistently and clearly.

I also love that it shows us the lads who are still into those “guy things” like rugby and Marvel movies and says: you can have these things without having to take on the toxic shit. You can be “boyish” and also kind and ethical and have strong friendships and not be defensive and angry all the time. There are lots of ways to be kind and ethical. You’ll need to be brave enough to stand up against all the pressures, and you'll probably fuck it up sometimes, but you can do it. And you’re not alone.

It’s so damn important for men and boys to see the possibilities outside the fucking cage that is patriarchal masculinity.
