#which is helpful when i'm struggling with a specific student

Hello! Very random and no worries if that's not your intention for the blog, but I love reading about your teacher experience and insights! Take this ask more so as encouragement to write more about it if you feel like it, because I'm going to start teaching soon (and yes, many people I've met have warned me about both its miracles and horrors lol) and it's really helpful to hear others' experiences :)
Thanks for the ask! Honestly I'm just a first year, so I don't have a tonnnn of advice to give. But here's a few general first year tips from one to a future another:
1 — No matter what, having a good department team is ESSENTIAL. You're going to be relying on them a lot your first year for help, advice, curriculum stuff, behavioral management stuff, etc. Talk to them, get to know them, have lunch with them, share issues/seek advice from them. You're going to encounter situations that your degree did not prepare you for (likely, in the first week lol. For me, it was Day 1) and having people around to help you judgement free is going to be crucial. I was super lucky that my department team and all the teachers from other departments that I work closely with are really amazing, easy to work with, etc.
2 — You're also going to want a good relationship with the "other" departments. The library staff, tech staff, sped department, guidance, janitors, etc. They're all lovely people, so don't be afraid to pop in to introduce yourself on the first week!
3 — Crazy things are going to happen. Like....all the time. Don't bring them home with you. As soon as you exit the doors, shake it off. All your students made it on the bus to their parents alive, so it's fine. Your job is done for the day. I've been going to the gym a lot right from school, and it's been really helpful to prevent myself from taking anything home with me so to speak.
4 — Document, document, document. Did something happen? Document it, email a copy to whoever's applicable: admin, guidance, sped, BCBA, etc. "Hello, just emailing a summary of what happened today" is not an uncommon email for me to send out. If an IEP isn't working, well at the next IEP meeting it shows they have 10 emails in the last month from you about little Timmy's hourly verbal threats and attempted physical violence to his classmates, so maybe the BCBA needs to do some data collection to adjust his BIP, or they need to give him a 1-1, or give him more resource intervention, etc.
5 — This isn't so much of advice, more like reassurance. The small moments when it clicks for a student and they get something, and then the confidence and excitement shows, it's really the best. That's probably why I've fallen so in love with working where I did. The other day, after weeks of struggling to help this student with Downs with his math, I tried a totally different approach based off a few example problems I saw in a math intervention workbook and hOLY HELL IT WORKED. It totally clicked for him, and the kid was so excited to do a problem out on the board for the class. It was amazing. Another student with an LD who I've been helping heavily school aced a quiz in one of her classes and legit ran into the room to show me. Cue me literally jumping out of my chair to high-five her, and her calling her parents to deliver the good news. Like, little things like that are really really special, and they're going to mean so much to you. And I hope you get to experience LOTS of them too!
#ask#not dp related#teaching#it's a great career but it can be stressful if you don't have other outlets#having lots of hobbies outside of school has helped prevent burnout significantly#i also do gig work in my other career outside of school#which has been another great outlet!#i have ppl i work with who i can see are reaching burnout now#and being in a place where you dread going to work every day is both not good for your mental health#and also isn't good for the kids you're working with#so preventing that is honestly key#i'd like to think that it's because i haven't been afraid to rely on those around me for help when i need it has been a huge factor#if something happened i have a few veteran teachers who have kinda taken the mentor role on me that i can go to#and when they need a judgement-free listening ear im open to be that person for them as well#i've also gotten to know some ppl in other departments pretty well#which is helpful when i'm struggling with a specific student#i can go to one of their other teachers and see how it's going in their classes#compare notes and whatnot

Summary: you're the teachers pet. Her. Favorite.
Warnings: smut DURH, mdni ! Thigh riding, soft dom bills nothing new here, sub reader, heavy sexual tension GAHH - think thats it ! Lmk if I left anything out 😙
Masterlist - pt 2 , pt 3
You were a college student. That's how most of these go right? You're the popular party throwing, blonde- no. In this case you were the shy, less known girl who sat in the middle of the class, not in the front and center. Or in the back. You were fairly confident, in yourself and what you loved. But all attention on you sent worry through your body. You had one best friend, Claudia. She was the kindest soul, more outgoing than you were but you loved her regardless.
Today was a Wednesday so that means music class. You don't really have any interest in it if you're being honest. But Claudia insisted you join her as a fun class, which you'd argue with and say all classes were fun in a way. But that wasn't strictly true. You couldn't sing, nor play any instrument so it wasn't as fun to you. "You know, I got you to agree to this class because it was fun, not to be good at it!" She says, walking beside you into the classroom. "But we have to try to be semi good at it- and that's not going so well." She just nudges you. "Well I already know you have fun anyway." She winks. Making your eyes roll.
"Don't you just wonder what she will be wearing today." - "You're annoying you know that?" She shrugs with a smile. "I know you love meee." As you entered the room. You spot her. The teacher of this specific class. She was beautiful and you most definitely had a crush on the woman. Was it silly? Maybe, but it was the only good thing about this class. Like Claudia was teasing to you about before. Today Ms O'Connell was wearing something very casual. A brown striped jacket with a collared white shirt underneath. Her hair was down today and she just looked so good. You sat down in your usual seats.
Ms O'Connell then starts for today. Explaining a few things, you honestly had no interest in them. But you just couldn't help staring at her. You then hear your name being called pulling you out of whatever trance you were in. "Y/n? You listening love?" You swallow discreetly, trying to not make it obvious how nervous she made you. You'd never let it fully show. Besides she talked to all the students that way. "Yes, sorry just tubed out for a sec. I'm listening." You replied sweetly, really not wanting to get in trouble. Or maybe that wouldn't be so bad. She nods in reply, continuing.
It wasn't as if you voluntarily put yourself out there, you never asked questions but for some reason she seemed to ask you all the questions, why? You were just writing something down when she eventually approaches you. "Can we speak after this lesson?" She asked you so softly, you thought youd die right there. You nod. Feeling tingles going throughout your body.
That time, was now. You were packing up your things as everyone else leaved, you go over to her, but not as close. Which confused her slightly. "You wanted to see me Miss?" Her head tilts. "You can come closer. I don't bite." Her pretty smile was then to be seen, you reluctantly go closer. "I've noticed the past few lessons you've been distracted." Uh oh. "Are you sleeping ok? You so look a little tired recently. Everything alright?" The way she's checking up on you makes you want to pounce at her and kiss her beautiful lips. But your mind remains, trying to calm it down. And it was slightly true, you always struggled to sleep but that's just been a thing ever since you were a kid.
"It's ok, I'm fine just not a huge sleeper?" You admit, but there was a concerned look on her face. "As long as you're ok." You nod, suspecting the conversation was done going to leave, but she grabs your arm gently. You look at her, into her eyes. Your nerves coming right back. "I'm always here if you need anything yeah? If you need to talk." And there you were again, in a compelling trance. Her eyes were like a spell. Your heart rate picks up, at the feeling of her hand on your arm.
Little did you know, she saw it all. The way you looked at her didn't go unnoticed by the woman. And little did you know. This was just the start of something, so crazy.
It was now Friday, music class yet again. And you couldn't stop thinking about that interaction, the way her hand held onto your arm, her blue eyes casting a spell on your own. You even slept better that night as silly as that may sound. Maybe she was like a comfort? You walk in with Claud, going to your normal spot. Ms hottie (as you liked to call her in your head.) Was wearing something interesting today. It was another collared shirt, with faint lines. Paired with a sleevless jacket ontop. She had a cap on, and those sexy glasses. You loved whenever she wore them.
She admitted to the class that she didn't need them she just enjoyed wearing them. And your immediate thought was hot. So every time she wears them you freak out a little inside. You listened to her voice, speaking, singing. God she was everything. You had told Claudia about the other day and she just made you more delusional about it, saying...
"Oh my god, what if she likes you."
"She was so teasing you with the bite comment."
"She knows."
It had been driving you nuts, like she was a little person in your head repeating those sentences. And here you were yet again, not focusing. Ms O'Connell looks over at you but staying quiet this time round.
There was no doubt about how bored you were, but it wasn't long to go thankfully. For the class and the rest of the year. You honestly couldn't wait to be done for good, this was the last year. Once the lesson was over you go to pack up your things, when you hadn't realized your other books had fallen out of your bag. You sigh, going to bend down to your knees to pick them up. Everyone was leaving, and it was just you and her. You stand once you collect yourself and your things, turning around but only to be met with those beautiful blue eyes.
You gasp, had you of been expecting she was right behind you. "Sorry sweetheart, didn't mean to startle you." You flash her your sweet smile. "It's ok!" She looks over your body, slowly. Hm. Unusual. Unusually hot. "You seem to fade into space alot. Is that normal?" She asks. Referring to you being distracted earlier. Her eyes keep roaming around your body, landing on your eyes... Then your lips. Continuing that motion til she settles on your eyes. "A little yeah, big daydreamer." You laugh a little, nervously. "What do you tend to think about?"
You. You. You. Your brain chants. "Things." Her head casually tilts, but it goes straight to your head. Or maybe your aching core. Because that was way too hot. You swallow, audibly. A tiny smirk plays on her lips. "What's the matter?" She asks with slight concern but her smirk overpowers any of that sympathy. You felt like for the first time you couldn't speak to her, your words gone. "Hm?" She asks with such a velvety smooth tone. You wanted to whine, it's as if she knew what she was doing. Making you feel such a way. But that's impossible, right? You pluck up some confidence. When she gets closer to you before you could speak. "Kinda glad this is your last class for today." Your brows furrow. What? "W-why-?" You then ask, widening your eyes at how pathetic it came out.
"Because, I get to do something that I've been wanting to for soooo long." Your breath becomes quicker, unsteady. Similar to your legs. "Please." You breathe out, too into your own thoughts to care about how wrong this situation may be. In broad daylight. Her lips come softly onto your own, so incredibly slow. Your tongues eventually mingle together, tasting the sudden desire against one another. She pulls back going to swipe her thumb against your lip. Staring at them. You felt dizzy, weak. No way you just kissed her. "Things. I didn't know that was my new name." She looks into your eyes again. Darker, sexy. Fuck. You thought. Her hands reach for yours going to take you into her secluded office.
She shuts and locks the door. Approaching you. "I see the way you look at me angel, I'm very aware." You swallow, louder than the last time. "Just know those daydreams have you soaked huh?" She pouts slightly, in a mocking sense. Your head reluctantly nods. Looking into her eyes, she backs you up against the desk. "Then you must know just how much I daydream of you." Your eyes grew bigger, did she really just say that? No way... Her hands rest on your thighs, face leaning closer to yours. Moving slowly to your ear. "May I show you, pretty girl?" Your breath catches in your throat before you reply, breathlessly. "Please do." Her smirk returns.
Grabbing your hand again and leading you around to her chair, eventually getting you to sit on her lap. Your hands rest on her shoulders. Hers gliding up and down the sides of your body. "Just want a little taste of what I've been mindlessly thinking of, yeah?" Whatever the fuck that meant you didn't care, nodding nonetheless. Her hands then grip your hips, manhandling you so your cunt is directly over her thigh. The change makes you gasp slightly considering you hadn't expected that. Your hands grip her shoulders as your underwear is met with the rough material of her pants. Having your skirt semi out of the way. "Thin. Wet." She says inches away from your face. You bite your lip as you both hold eye contact. The way her glasses sit on her face making it 10x better.
This woman. She's driving you mental. Were you dreaming or something? She begins to slowly move you on her thigh, making your first noise come beautifully past your lips. "Good, you know how to use your voice." She says, averting her eyes to you and her thigh. "You gunna make a mess on ne sweet girl?" Your eyes shut as her movements quicken, feeling your brain fog over with a euphoric sensation. "M-more.." You blurt out. "More she says?" Billie chuckles deliciously. (Like at the end of guess 😵) "Angel wants more, how very sweet." You gulp. "P-please?" Your soft voice made her go nuts. She wanted so badly to ruin you right here right now. But she resisted for the time being. "And she asks sooo-" Her movements speed up, causing your eyes to pop, jaw agape. "-nicely."
Your head lulls back as you feel it coming, the way your clit was throbbing against her rapidly. Soon after feeling that tightness, only to be met with that sticky necter. All over her thigh. She hums in approval. Letting you fall against her, head landing in the crook of her neck. Your breathing slowly coming back to you as her hand rubs gently over the skin of your arm. "That's why you're my favorite."
After a minute or two you come back to reality. Not the right reality but your senses turn back on. She swiftly tucks a strand of hair behind your ears. Smiling at you gently, thinking for you second before taking her hat off and plopping it on your head. She looks at you so lovingly, now seeing that compassion in her eyes. It made you melt, softly putting your hands on her face. Hers latch delicately over your wrists, soon grabbing your hand and kissing it tenderly. This was wrong, not because of any age, but because she was your teacher. Did you really care tho? Hardly. Once you leave it's not like it'd matter. But oh fuck it felt too good.
"Go clean up darling, I'll see you on Wednesday." She then winks, as you leave the classroom. And all your mind could say was.
Oh.
My.
God.
Pt 2 will be out soon. ;)

hey! sorry if i'm bothering, but can I request Silver and a Cinderella-inspired Yuu? I just think it would be really cute and I couldn't get the thought out of my head at all! thanks in advance and have a good day!
silver w/ cinderella!reader ✧・゚
.
This is a cute idea!! I loved Disney's Cinderella as a kid (all three movies). I had an idea for this and I went with it, please let me know if I should make a secondary part to this or if you'd like another aspect of a "Cinderella" Yuu to be explored.
Because of a lack of preference expressed, the reader is gender-neutral in this post (my default mode of writing). I'm getting better at checking, though. Don't want another accidentally making a male Yuu they/them again (sobs).
.
Summary: Silver meets someone from Royal Sword Academy at a joint school event that ultimately becomes a friend... or something more? Either way, Sebek won't shut up about it. (Silver with a Cinderella-inspired reader).
TW/CW: This is continued here.
Notes: pre to in a relationship, the reader is NOT Ramshackle Prefect/Yuu, they/them pronouns for the reader
Guest Stars: Sebek Zigvolt

Silver
Silver has no specific opinions when he first meets [Name]. His judgments are regarding threats to Malleus, not personal thoughts.
Over time, he begins to notice that [Name] is a nice person.
Not only that, but they are more genuine than the average NRC student. It's almost a bit uncanny in the beginning.
Silver does not approach [Name] first and will need to be pursued by them or (essentially) have a meet-cute with them.
Provided one of those things happens, Silver does not mind being the friend of this nice and soft-tempered person.
They do not seem to be a threat to Malleus, so he trusts them.
Silver admires [Name]'s ability in the kitchen and with housework as both tasks were struggles for Lilia when Silver was a child.
He may ask to help you in the kitchen to learn more about food.
His taste buds are a bit damaged from Lilia's cooking.
Despite this, he is eager to learn and make better food for his dorm and family alike. He will praise his teacher as well.
Silver is a bit dense when it comes to his own emotions.
Between falling asleep at bad times and lacking emotional experiences that would make him understand "romantic" endeavors, Silver only looks the part of a fairy tale prince.
He is more likely to enter a comfortable dynamic with his potential love interest than profess his undying love for them suddenly.
A confession from Silver comes after a long period of friendship followed by a longer period of ???-ship in which everyone thinks the two are dating except for them.
Silver later realizes that [Name]'s inner strength and gentle soul are what made him care for them as much as he does.
Looking down at the light-haired sophomore, [Name] wondered what he was dreaming about. How could someone fall asleep in this field when there was so much music from the joint-campus festival? It seemed a bit odd, even for a mage school. [Name] could only think of one student at RSA whose sleeping habits were even remotely similar.
"Pardon me... Are you okay?" they asked again, crouching down and leaning over to observe his expression.
He's really not waking up...
He was rather... princely. A beauty if there ever was one. Sleeping in this field with his hair gently tousled from however he'd ended up this way... His eyes were closed and his breathing slowed.
[Name] could think of a few classmates who might call him a prince.
As they watched him, debating on whether to call out to him again, they noticed the small bunch of animals that had appeared near the boy. There were two birds, a bluebird and a cardinal, as well as a small rabbit with white fur and red eyes.
How sweet...
What [Name] wasn't expecting was to lose their balance suddenly, falling without time to save anyone from the impact. It was in that instant that the boy woke up and swiftly, in one motion, pulled [Name] close to him to prevent them from crushing the animals that had been observing him.
However, that act of kindness left the two of them in a bit of a compromising position for two strangers to be in...
Footsteps were heard growing faster with every passing second.
[Name]'s face burned red at the closeness even if there was no lustful intentions behind the resulting position. It was for the animals, it wasn't toward them of all people! This boy didn't know them.
"SILVER!?? WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?" a voice asked quite loudly as he approached the two of them. "HOW DARE YOU, HUMAN!!!!"
Silver sighed.
He was human too. Wasn't he?
Truthfully, despite being raised by a fairy, Silver thought that Sebek needed to change his attitude even if just a tad. They did go to what amounted to a majority human school. Didn't they? It was inappropriate.
"Sebek, be quiet," Silver replied, hesitating to move lest he make the situation even more compromising, "Are you alright?"
The second part of his statement was toward the fallen [Name]. They blinked a few times before nodding, trying to get to their feet without injuring themself or "Silver" (as they had learned from the louder boy, "Sebek"). They did not succeed.
Where do you put your hands in this situation? They didn't want to make it worse. Lost in the moment, they could only nod to Silver.
This is definitely something to add to my journal...
"I'm fine, thank you for protecting the animals," [Name] told Silver.
A serious expression graced Silver's face.
"I wouldn't want them to get hurt, they're innocent."
This was Silver's personal sentiment as a knight and as the little boy who played in the woods for many formative years of his life.
"SILVER. DETACH YOURSELF FROM THAT HUMAN AT ONCE."
Sebek was... persistent.
Yes... Let's go with that word rather than the couple of insults that buzzed around Silver's mind at that moment. Sebek should, in an ideal world, know better than to be rude to a stranger, a guest at their school no less.
"Right," Silver replied, standing instantly before helping [Name] to their feet before stepping away from them.
It all happened so quickly that [Name] wasn't sure how he'd done it.
"I apologize for that," Silver told them, looking just a tad sheepish, "It was not behavior befitting a knight to my Master. I hope you will forgive me."
[Name] was at a loss for words once more. Master? Knight?
"It's okay," they assured, unsure what else to say.
But, really, it was fine. No harm done. If it was for the animals then it was well worth it. Silver hadn't had any perverse thoughts by it. It was a little awkward but all's well that ends well. That was their thought.
Silver nodded for the second or perhaps the third time in the interaction as he gave Sebek a look (this made Sebek's harsh anti-human glare lessen ever-so-slightly).
"Once again, I apologize to you..." Silver trailed off, "Ah, I don't believe I've even introduced..."
In the two seconds Silver paused, Sebek cut him off.
"This is Silver and I am Sebek Zigvolt. Guards to Malleus-sama, we are here to ensure his safety," Sebek explained as if reciting something that had been taught to him from a young age.
"That we are," Silver agreed, "And you are..?"
"[Full Name]," [Name] answered, "A pleasure to meet you."
"Of course," Silver spoke, shooting a look at Sebek who was still glaring daggers at [Name] from earlier, "We have to leave now, but maybe we'll cross paths again."
A smile graced [Name]'s lips as they nodded.
What an interesting pair.
Unknown to [Name], Silver would think back on their encounter that night. Perhaps that was a first for him. It would be something for his father to tease him about for the rest of eternity, he supposed.
.
.
.
Imagine the rest yourself~

ᡣ Unexpected Encounter, But Fated To Meet 𐭩
Summary: realizing that your parents were struggling with financials, you decided to help them by taking up on a part-time job in a small Cafe in order to support them, including yourself. At first, it went surprisingly well—with you heading to the Cafe after school on a specific day, start working until the sun sets, and when your shift ends, you clock out. But one day, someone you knew from school had accidentally found you working, making you anxious at first. This became the worst moment in your life—! ...Or did it?
Note: To whoever requested this, I hope you like it! (Credits to loichiha on Twitter/X for the art)
Request inbox: open (Phainon only, fluff) feel free to request, as long as it's in my capability.
As the clock continued to tick with each passing moments, serving as a reminder that school was about to end soon for today, students were busy preparing to get home by tidying up their personal belongings and putting them into their bags. This way, they would only need to wait for the school bell to ring, and then go home right away.
Some were already planning to get home right away, choosing to spend the rest of the day by lounging in the house—while others preferred to hang out with their friends first, spending time together in a destinated location or working on group projects, so that they would have loads of free times on the weekends, etc.
But you, you already had a place to go to—from the moment junior year had started for you, you already had a scheduled plan in mind on where to go on this specific day.
You were going to work; as a part-time barista.
"(Name), let's hang out!" One of your friends called for you from a distance, standing next to the others who were still busy putting in their belongings as the rest of the students started scrambling out of the door, the school bell already ringing to give them the final cue that they needed to hear.
Checking your bag one more time to ensure that you wouldn't leave something behind in the class, your head turned to look over at the mention of your name, seeing your friends looking at you with smiles plastered on their faces, expecting for you to agree to their plan.
As much as you wanted to agree and spend time with your close friends after school, you didn't let the idea of hanging out to deter you from the original plan that you had already set up on what you're about to do after school.
With a guilty smile, you zipped your bag before slinging it over your shoulders, turning to move and approach your friends. "Sorry guys, I can't. I already have a plan that I'm about to do today after school." You explained, hoping that they would understand, considering that you would often excused yourself from doing any activities after school on this specific day.
Your friends gave eachother momentary glances, before their attentions diverted back to you. "Aww, you're busy again?" One of them decided to say, the same girl that had asked you to hangout with them. You could sense the disappointment from her tone, as well as the others' faces upon hearing the same excuse that you would always say almost everytime.
With a breathy chuckle, you apologized again for the inconvenience. "Sorry..." You mumbled, before most of them let out a sigh, feeling disappointed that you weren't going to be there for their hangout again. Nonetheless, they nodded. "It's fine. You're always busy on this day anyway, so it's not a surprise." Your friend reassured, before smiling.
"But don't forget to leave some free times for us in your schedule aside from today!" She told you, to which you nodded. "Don't worry, I will." You assured, confident that you would get to spend time with them aside from today.
Adjusting the straps of your bag, you looked at your friends with another smile, before walking passed by them, not forgetting to give them a proper farewell. "Well then, I'll be going now!" You announced, waving them a goodbye.
They reciprocated your action with their owns, waving you a goodbye and wishing that you would be safe along the road. "Okay, stay safe, (Name)!" One of them exclaimed, before seeing your figure walked out of the door, leaving them to their own accords in the empty classroom.
"...Do you think that (Name) secretly has a boyfriend?" One of them decided to bring up the topic out of nowhere, whispering to the others before all of them started to indulge themselves by figuring out the truth behind your tight schedule. "Or a girlfriend, maybe?"
"What? No way! Maybe— but why bring that up?"
"I won't be surprised if they do. They're always busy on this day everytime."
"Who knows? maybe they are secretly going on dates with their lover behind our backs. That's why they always say no whenever we ask them to spend time with us after school."
"Woah, wait— but that would be cruel though! If that's true, why would they choose to hide it from us and secretly go on dates with their lover without our knowledge?!"
"Everyone has personal stuff that they would much prefer be hidden away from others to avoid unnecessary conflicts—including them. Who are we to judge?"
"Haha, she's right!" One of them who had been quiet decided to acknowledge, agreeing with the friend who gave words of wisdom.
"Although, now I'm itching to follow them—to see if you're right."
"No. Well, yes— I do too, but let's just wait and see if we're actually right or not in the end to confirm our theory, okay?"
"Finee..." Most of them proceeded to say at the same time, before they changed the topic to the plan they were about to do after this, acting as if they didn't just create a wild assumption about you.
Despite the misunderstanding that your friends had assumed about you, thinking that you actually had a lover without their knowledge—you continued to walk by the roadside with a firm but casual manner, unaware of what was going on at school between your friends.
One thing's for certain though; you were about to head to work, to your part-time job.
Opening the door to the Cafe, the little bell above it chimed soundly, signalling to everyone in the room that someone had just came in; you.
The employees who noticed you decided to greet you with smiles plastered on their faces—feeling pleased that you had arrived. Most of them being older than you, but you didn't mind, since you're only here to work on a specific time due to your role as a highschool student.
Reciprocating their kind actions, you waved a hand to them with a smile, feeling more upbeat than ever to start working after they greeted you with opened arms. You had always viewed them as parental figures, due to their ages being far bigger than you. To be honest, it felt nice working with them, since they're more experienced when it comes to working in a Cafe—that way, you can always rely on them if you ever need any help, regarding your duty as a young worker here.
Entering a room specifically for employees, you changed your school uniform to the uniform that you had to wear in order to blend in with the others. After you're done, you walked out of the room to help the others by cleaning the place and preparing stocks in order to not be out of products, before you walked behind the counter; expecting for your first customer to enter the room.
"...(Name)? How rare! I didn't expect to see you here." Someone exclaimed from across the counter, their voice being far too familiar for you to assume that it was just some regular customer. You were busy checking the money in the cash register to notice who it was at first—but at the mention of your name, your head instinctively looked up, wondering who the person was.
Which left you baffled.
Standing across from you, there was a white-haired boy, appearing to be in the same age as you, his aquamarine eyes being one of the visible characteristics that would always leave people to be mesmerized when they got the chance to look into them from a close distance. His broad shoulders in tact, as well as his height being taller than an average man, making his presence to be known when he entered the room.
But most importantly; his smile. The same smile that would make people be relaxed everytime they got the chance to see it, letting their guard down in the bask of his positive nature.
The smile that you're all too familiar with.
Phainon.
Your eyes widened when you noticed who the person was, feeling a rush of panic tumbling down on you, in fear of someone you know finding out that you're working behind school's gates—not that it actually mattered.
"...Phainon?! What— what are you doing here...?" Your words came out in an abrupt tone, due to the sheer shock after realizing that one of your classmates from school had now seen you in your working garments, acting as a barista.
Your question caught Phainon off guard, not expecting for you to ask something like that, making him to raise an eyebrow at you. "What am I doing here? What are you doing here?" He chuckled, tilting his head. "I didn't expect for someone like you to be working here, (Name)." He commented, crossing his arms with amusement, deciding to indulge himself by teasing you once in a while.
However, when he noticed the anxious look coming from the way your expression fidgeted, he chuckled again, deciding to drop the idea, for now. "Don't worry, I come in peace. I just wasn't expecting to see you of all people to be here, (Name)." He continued, looking at you with his usual signature smile, albeit wider. "Do your parents own this place? Or are you actually working here?" He decided to inquire, not being able to hide his questions to himself, since this moment was too good of a coincidence to let it slip by from his grasp.
After you managed to calm yourself, you shook your head, which made Phainon intrigued. "No, I'm... Yes, I'm actually working here." You admitted, couldn't help but tap your foot behind the counter to express your nervous system. "My parents are low on money, so I wanted to take up on a part-time job in order to support them, including myself, since I want to go to college." You explained in a low tone, hands behind your back, gaze focused toward anything else beside the boy in front of you.
Phainon noticed the way you expressed your nervousness, but he decided to not divulge the matter, choosing to respect your boundary. Nodding, he brought his arms down. "I see. College, huh? Well, with those reasons, it's no wonder why you decided to take up on a part-time job." He acknowledged, nodding again with his eyes closed. "Though, out of every jobs I could think of—I didn't expect for you to be working as a cashier here." He commented, wanting to talk with you more.
Hearing his comment, your gaze shifted back to him, mouth hung open at the assumption before you shook your head again. "Ah, no... I'm actually a barista, but I sometimes help my senior colleagues whenever they're busy with something, by helping them clean the Cafe or being a cashier." You corrected him, one of your hands moving as you explained.
Your correction toward his comment made Phainon more intrigued, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Barista, huh? Interesting." He murmured, before glancing at somewhere else, noticing that you were the only one standing behind the counter. "Then, could I trouble you to take up my order? Since you're the only one here right now." He asked, taking this opportunity to have his order be made by you.
Not seeing through his underlying intention, you nodded, smiling genuinely now. You were pretending to be a cashier right now, after all, but also a barista at the same time. "Of course! What would you like to order?" You exclaimed, one of your hands reaching out to take one small note and a pen in order to take his order.
Fingers under his chin, Phainon decided to order what he wanted. "I'll have a..." You kept your eyes peeled to the note in your hand, as you scribbled the words that he said, unaware of the other's gaze as he observed you being so focused in your job. Cute.
After you're done, you tore your gaze away from it to look up. "Alright, your order will be ready in about a few minutes. Please sit anywhere you'd like while I make them." You confirmed his order, continuing to smile at him.
He reciprocated your smile with his own, nodding his head. "Appreciate it." He replied, turning around to find a seat that would be comfortable for himself. But, just as he started walking, he looked over his shoulder to steal a glance at you—who was busy preparing his order, too focused to notice his sneaky look, but he smiled, nonetheless.
Maybe, he should come back to this Cafe again from time to time—just so he could watch you work and strike up a conversation with you in order for both of you to get closer with eachother.
Cleaning the tables, you were preparing to head back home after your shift ended, making sure to not make it late at night since you weren't allowed by the manager to work until that period of time, due to your role as a student.
Unbeknownst to you, someone had been watching you from his seat, not moving an inch—but you were still too dedicated in your job to notice that his presence was still lingering in the Cafe. Just as you finished sweeping the floor, you turned around to change uniform; preparing to head home.
Phainon, who had been watching you from afar from the start, took the last sip from his drink before smiling, deciding to get up from his seat when he noticed that you were about to clock out from your shift.
This was his chance.
"Are you finished?" He questioned, appearing out of nowhere in front of you, which ended up making you startled, not expecting for him to still be in the Cafe. You were already changed into your school uniform, matching with his own set of ones. It would be an understatement if Phainon's sudden presence didn't make your heart almost leaped out of your body.
"P-phainon!" You blurted out, one of your hands clutching your chest at his sudden presence, catching you by surprise. "Why are you— you were here all this time...?" You murmured, not expecting for him to surprise you for the second time today. Phainon, who noticed you getting startled due to his presence, chuckled in a guilty manner.
"Ah, sorry. I didn't mean to startle you." He apologized, hands in his pockets, before diverting his attention back to your question. "Why, yes. I was wondering when are you going to clock out from your shift." He mentioned, looking down to take in your school uniform. "Are you heading home now?" He asked, before his voice took a softer turn. "...Want to go home together? I can accompany you there, to your house—if you'd like." He offered, hoping that you would accept.
Was he being obvious regarding his intentions? Yes. Would he prefer to let this chance slip by in order to maintain his dignity? Of course not.
"Huh? Oh— no, it's fine. You don't have to." You declined, waving your hand. "I don't want to end up burdening you. Besides, my house is a bit far from our school." You added, knowing that you would have to pass by your school again if you want to get home, so you didn't want to end up dragging Phainon along—who lives in god knows where. You expected that he would understand and go home now, but you ended up underestimating the guy's effort.
"Nonsense! I insist." He exclaimed, closing his eyes with a huge smile. "I don't know if you knew this, but my house is actually close to yours." He suddenly mentioned, opening his eyes again. "I've always seen you walking home whenever I'm hanging out with my friends in our neighborhood, so I ended up assuming that your house is probably closer to mine than I expected." He explained, tilting his head before continuing.
"Which also means that we can walk home together! So? You up for it?" He asked again, feeling his smile becoming wider when he realized that there was no way you were about to decline his offer again, leaning a bit closer to you in order to showcase how eager he was to walk home with you, giving you a look that would make you hesitate to decline.
He looked like a puppy, you thought to yourself.
Shaking your head at the subconscious thought, you felt your cheeks heat up a little at how close his face was, but not close enough to make you uncomfortable. He must be so eager to walk home with you, judging by how he didn't back down when you declined his offer at first. Keeping your composure maintained, you gave up on trying to decline.
Nodding your head, you agreed to his offer, making him very pleased. "Great! I knew you'd come around." He claimed, before backing up to give you some space. "Well then... let's go." He said, keeping his hands in his pockets in order to hide how they kept fidgeting due to the rush of excitement building up.
In the end, you and Phainon decided to converse with eachother on the way home, walking passed by your school in order to get to your houses. The more you two talked to pass the time, the more you felt that your bond with him had become closer than it used to. Phainon must've felt this too—which is why he kept smiling as he matched your pace, enjoying both of your conversation.
What was once normal classmates who barely talked—turned into something more. You felt your lips curved up, feeling a new friendship had been formed with the white-haired boy.
Unbeknownst to you, it was something far more than just friendship. But you don't need to know that now, do you?

Why aren't comics more common in TTRPGs?

(This is about game design and presentation) In school one of the things I discovered is that I have trouble absorbing info from a big text book. And most TTRPGs are presented as text books. Once I understand the basic information in the book (chemistry textbook or RPG sourcebook or whatever) I can deal with the book on my own terms. I can dive into individual parts and learn, and slowly absorb the book as a whole. But I need help to get there. I need an access port. Sometimes this comes in the form of someone explaining the book to me. Explaining the rules of the game or the outline of an essay. This is great, and gives me a way in so I can absorb and master the book myself. But I don't always have someone in my life who can do that. Interestingly, I don't have this problem with novels at all. Narrative feels easier to access, at least for me.
In school I also discovered Scot McCloud's Understanding Comics. This is a pretty fantastic book which I'd recommend to everyone. It helped me understand how I process information. More importantly, it helped me understand the different people process information in different ways. I hadn't realized that at age 16, although I was starting to suspect it. Before I started making comics or games I used to be a teacher. As a teacher I could see that some of my kids were struggling with the information I was giving them, in the same way I had struggled in school. I started using comics in class to help reach these students. I'd draw little comics on my handouts or on the whiteboard to explain what we were learning. The goal wasn't to provide an entire lesson in comics form. I'm not Scott McCloud! Instead, I was trying to find an access point for my students. An on ramp. A port of entry to the ideas and material we were covering so they could engage and eventually absorb the information. It worked so well. It worked like magic. Why don't we do this more in TTRPGs? I used comics in my early games, Panty Explosion Perfect and Ocean. These were narrative comics, not rules comics, but the goal was to provide both an example of what play looked like (from a narrative standpoint) and a point of access for players who weren't sure what the game was or how to engage with it. My thought was that if you understood what the game was supposed to look like it would be easier to approach the rules. (A short comic from Ocean. The book has a bunch of these)

When my brother Nick and I started working on The Magical Land of Yeld I knew I wanted to use comics more directly as a teaching tool. Especially because part of our target audience was new and younger players who might look at a big text book (Yeld is a giant 400 page hardcover) and just bounce right off it. Like I did in school and like I often do with big games. So I needed to teach with examples and illustrations, and especially comics.

The first comics you'll encounter in the Yeld book are narrative, and designed to get you into the ideas and themes of the game. But in the first few pages we also start sprinkling in rules comics. These are presented along side the rules text. They don't replace that text, which is important. The text explains the rules in greater detail, and includes information that just couldn't be added in a single page comic. Instead, the comic is intended to be a point of access to the rules text. A player can read the comic, understand the basic concept, and feel comfortable engaging with the text. That's the goal, to make players comfortable and to make the rules text accessible.

We use comics to teach basic game mechanics, but we also use them to explain specific player facing systems. Sometimes these are things that really do need a comic to explain them, but sometimes we use comics as lures to draw player attention to mechanics that we're afraid they might otherwise not engage with. For example, in playtesting we found that when characters died during a fight the player would just sit there for the rest of the fight and not engage. It turned out, since you don't do anything in D&D once you die (except slowly die more), most players assume that's how all games work! So they hadn't even noticed that in Yeld you become a Ghost and get to ghost around and do fun Ghost stuff! I decided to create a comic that not just explained this but drew attention to it and showed why it was a fun (and important) part of the game!

Structure of play isn't always obvious to players, especially if they're new to TTRPGs or have only played D&D. You pick up habits from the games you play the most, and since most gamers play nothing but D&D there is a tendency to assume EVERYTHING works like D&D. Yeld doesn't, so we decided to take nothing for granted and make comics that very specifically show what a session of play looks like. In this example, it may not look a lot different from D&D, but the adventure is specifically divided into 5 parts. The comic illustrates these parts in a way that is easy to understand. The accompanying game text explains each part in more detail and illustrates how they are important to play. The comic serves as a ramp that gets players to the info they need.

Not all of our comics are player facing. Yeld has a rotating GM (which is awesome, btw), and this means every player gets a chance in the Game Master roll. Which means every player needs to understand how this roll works. Comics like this one, which explain how to build monsters to use in your game, help make the process easy to understand. Again, its about building a point of entry for players. A player might say "I don't want to GM, it sounds to complicated!" But its not. You just need to make it easy for them. Make the mechanics and responsibilities easy to understand. Show why they're fun! In Yeld, its important that each player takes on the GM role from time to time, since we're building a story together. Making it look fun is important! Comics help with that. What's more fun than comics?

Narrative comics are important too. At least for Yeld. I don't think every game benefits from them (although I always love seeing them). Narrative comics show players what the game is supposed to look like. What the characters do and say. What environments they visit. Narrative comics set a tone. Narrative comics let new players understand what a game is about immediately! We can hand a Yeld book to a new player or customer and they know what's up in seconds, just by reading a short single page comic. That's a powerful tool. So why don't more games use comics? Part of it is that game creators are usually not comic creators. There's not a lot of crossover. That always surprises me, but both disciplines take a lot of work. Who has time for both? Even when you have game designers that are comic creators, they often don't include comics in the games (Lancer???). I don't think this means game designers don't recognize the value of comics. I've had this conversation with so many game designers, and they usually agree that comics are useful tools. But if you don't know how to make comics, making comics for your game can be daunting. What rules should you focus on? How do you present that information in comic form? How many comics should you make? How do you hire someone to make comics, anyway? Hiring artists is expansive, btw. You know that, of course. Hiring an artist to make a set of comics for your game could cost you thousands of dollars (or more), depending on what you want. Of course, you can try to make your own comics. And you should! Really! A poorly drawn comic is not necessarily a bad comic. The point is to get your information across to your reader. to provide a point of access. You don't need great art for that (although great art can help attract people to your game). Stick figure work just fine. Here's an example, the layout for the Tea Dragon card game. Another artist took this layout and redrew it in their own style. But my goal here was to be simple and concise with my explanation of the rules. To make the game accessible.

There's a few more pages of this, but you get the idea. The purpose is to explain, and make the player comfortable with learning more. The art matters to the extent that it serves this goal. In fact, flashy or complicated art can get in the way! You'll notice in that most of the Yeld rules comics I posted above the art is pretty simple, with solid color backgrounds. You want to make your comics as easy to read as possible, and that includes avoiding clutter, overpacked word balloons and messy layout. Readers are easily distracted. It doesn't take much for them to set down a book at all. A complicated phrase or hard to read font can often be enough. And once they set a book down they may not every pick it up again. That's more true for a big text book than it is for a comics, but its still true for a comic. So our goal is to make our comic the easiest, smoothest point of access it can possibly be. So easy and smooth that the reader can slide right into the rules text without noticing! Here's my general process for creating a rules comic. This is from my friend Brian's game Scofflaws. I start by taking the basic mechanics that need to be illustrated and breaking them down into panels. The goal is to make each panel readable and not overwhelm the player. At this point I'm just doing a rough sketch. It may not eve=n be readable, but that's fine!

Next, I refine the text and art. I decide on the exact language I'll use, and I finalize where characters and other elements will be placed. As you can see, the actual layout didn't change much here. Sometimes it changes a lot!

Finally, I create the finished art. Honestly, the previous step was just fine. It explanans the rules I wanted to explain. But this last step allows me to add in some narrative flavor. The first panel contains a complicated background in order to present the game's setting. The characters look like the kind of characters you'll play in the game. This isn't nessacary for presenting rules, but it helps present the game as a whole. You want players to engage with every part of your game. The last thing you want them doing is picking up your dungeon crawling game and going "Oh, this would be great for playing Star Wars!"

(I probably shouldn't have chose than shade of red for the background. It makes the text a bit hard to read!) So again, why aren't we seeing more comics in games? Its not as if they don't exist at all, and I'm personally always excited to see them. I recently opened the Final Fantasy RPG box set and was so happy to find the rules were accompanied by cute comics. And there's lot of other examples (maybe you can post some in the comments). But I think comics are a clearly underused tool in game design and presentation. And as a comic person, let me tell you that you're leaving a valuable tool on the table if you're not considering using comics. Are they right for every game? Maaaybe not? But I think MANY MANY MANY games could benefit form them. Are they expensive? They can be. Are they hard to make? They can be. Are there people you can go to for advice? Hey, my door is open.

The quirk apprehension test was... weird? Right?
The more and more you go over the quirk apprehension test the more you notice how it... doesn't actually apprehend anyone's quirks. At all. Especially when compared to the Training Camp Arc that's specifically built around improving and, yknow, apprehending the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of everyone's individual quirks.
As one of the first high-stakes events at UA the quirk apprehension test isn't there to actually evaluate or rank the class' quirks, but to create a moment of tension and anxiety for Deku's future as a hero, and to highlight how much work he has ahead of him to keep pace with his classmates. Sure, okay, cool.
EXCEPT! THE! SCORES! MAKE! NO! SENSE!!!
( Yes okay I understand the point for the test wasn't to actually properly reflect the specific skill-sets of class 1-A, I know this. But. )
Not only does the test severely limit their ability to show off what their quirks can actually do, but for a lot of them they're just... totally incompatible. Sure, some of them have been training a long time before UA, so they should have high scores anyway, and yeah some of them have quirks that naturally lend themselves to getting high scores in these areas. Sure! But!
But.
Deku should not have been in 20th. At all. There's plenty of people who did little-to-no training before UA, have quirks that don't have the kind of physicality that's helpful in these circumstances, and in a lot of ways would actively hinder them!
For many, unless you choose to sabotage your competitors, which would get you a higher score by comparison but utterly wreck the idea of teamwork and untiy, their quirks are either totally irrelevant to the task or actively detrimental. I don't say this to shit on any of the characters, just to point out that:
1. The test set up is bogus (and I'm astounded that Aizawa would set up something that's so biased against non-physical quirks, when his own would be totally useless without choosing to sabotage others)
2. Deku was active, fit, in good shape, and more than capable of getting above-average scores on almost all categories without using OFA
3. Compared to some other members of the class who had either detrimental or non-physical quirks, and also did very little physical training, he SHOULD have ranked higher than 20th at the BARE MINIMUM
So, having spent a good while talking it over with @chilchucks-timbs we created an in depth chart ranking the 1A students in each of the 8 listed tests, using the (very VERY few) recorded canon scores and common sense and logic to fill in the gaps.
Below is a chart of the final scores:
Left: Our final top 20 ranking, with scores across all 8 tests tallied and organised lowest to highest (think golf rules)
Center: The same top 20, but this time colour matched to the canon rankings, and accompanied by averages
Right: The canon top 20, colour coded
We tallied the final marks only after going through each physical test one by one and debating the outcomes individually.
Below is a breakdown of each of the rankings for all 8 physical tests:
Most of our choices were based on 2 questions we applied to very category: who would be able to apply their quirk the best in this scenario, and who would perform/be hindered by their quirks the worst. Working from there, we filled in the blanks.
The biggest conclusions we drew are:
While he's shown to struggle with flexibility, Deku has proven over and over during his training montage that he's fit, active, strong, exercises to excess, and can certainly maintain a long distance run. Steadily ranking around the halfway mark of the class by topping those who can't apply their quirks to the task, combined with second place in the ball throw, there's no CHANCE he would end up in 20th place. Free my boy he did a good job he didn't deserve that.
Yaoyorozu really has the most versatile quirk that's applicable to ANY situation and she absolutely deserves to retain her 1st place position.
Asui achieving only 13th place in the canon ranking is baffling. BAFFLING. Her quirk is entirely physical and lends itself utterly to these speicifc types of tests. 13th??? THIRTEENTH??!??! When her entire quirk is hopping jumping moving??? Madness. Absolutely madness.
Bakugo maintains 3rd place either way because he really is That Bitch
Using Todoroki as an example, I think Horikoshi built his final ranking based on vibes and based on quirks. By looking at the canon ranking versus ours, I think it's quite clear that he rated them based on his own perception of their quirk strength as a whole within the context of the entire story - not how they would perform in this specific circumstance. Todoroki, who at this point, while highly trained, is still refusing to use his fire and can't actually use just his ice for very much of these tests. Side steps? Seated toe-touch?? What could ice from one half of his body POSSIBLY add to those scores? Enough to bring him to 2nd place? Not on your life
Iida stays in 4th place, all-rounder king and legend
Ashido is a similar case to Asui - how can someone with such a physically-focused quirk AND a canonically physical lifestyle rank in at 9th? Even then, her agility and speed can only take her so far HOW did she overtake Asui in the final canon ranking? How could acid possibly trump frog in jumping or side stepping?
Horikoshi has a very clear bias towards strength-type quirks that (excluding Asui) dominates among males students. Characters who are larger, stronger, an have bigger builds are ranking higher in these tests DESPITE the fact that, for a lot of them, they'd either be hindered (seated toe-touch if they're too stocky to have much flexibility, the long-distance run in their larger builds work against their stamina and endurance, etc.). Being strong doesn't make you fast, or agile, or flexible, and a lot of them shouldn't be as highly ranked as they are when other quirks are more applicable in those circumstances.
Sad to say but Koda is ranking 20th overall. Koda's quirk doesn't lend itself to ANY of these tests (unless he chose to summon animals to actively detract from his classmates scores to bring his own up by comparison) and his quirk has given him a stocky, heavy, inflexible build that would hinder him greatly in any of the tests that need speed, agility and flexibility. Despite doing well in some tests, overall his quirk wasn't able to help him AT ALL in any of these tests, and by comparison he's sunk to 20th in the end.
While there really aren't enough girls actually in the class (the first red flag) to be able to draw a clear conclusion on the final canon rankings having an extreme gender bias, I've still included a gendered breakdown because you can see just how clearly and aggressively Asui and Mina were nerfed for absolutely no logical reason.
Most of the tests' 20th place were between Koda and Mineta, based on how their physical builds would work against them in different tests (Koda would have more physical reach for jumping, running, etc. than Mineta's absurdly short build, and Koda's stockiness and inflexibility would hinder him). I know we all love to put Mineta in last place overall, but unfortunately he did absolutely kill the repeated side steps and there's no arguing with it, and despite coming in 20th more than anyone else, one 1st place score is enough to drag him out of 20th overall. (Which, again, further reinforces our argument that Deku never should have been in 20th place after managing to snag a 2nd place score in just one of these tests, even if he did perform poorly in all other physical tests. Which he didn't. At all.)
One last time, I'd really like to reiterate that these apprehension tests are straight up unfair to those without physical quirks. Koda, Jirou, Hakagure and Kaminari specifically cannot use their quirks to physically agment their own body or their movement in any way - even if they're incredibly valuable in the contexts of a physical fight, espionage, or search and rescue work. Jirou and Kaminari in particular likely did well at the entrance exam against robots, while Koda and Hakagure could do excellent work in the future as underground and search and rescue heroes. I simply cannot believe that Aizawa would use this as a useful measurement of these kids' quirks and abilities.
You cannot seriously try and convince me that DEKU has poorer running endurance, grip strength, etc. than his classmates that DON'T have physically augmented quirks, after spending months proving it to us through his intense training regimen. Mineta? Hakagure? Jirou? Kaminari? Aoyama?? You think he has a weaker grip strength than foppish waifish fancyboy Aoyama?? After dragging around piles of scrap by HAND?!? MADNESS. Madness. Even if he didn't score as well as we think he would, coming out on top of those guys (which he UNQUESTIONABLY would) combined with a 2nd place ball throw score he CAN'T place 20th overall. That's! That's not how numbers work! It just doesn't work like that!!!!
Someone could absolutely argue that Aizawa put the test together to see who puts in the physical effort to improve themselves outside of their quirk as well as being able to use it creatively - but honestly I don't buy it. At the end of the day, I know this was just a plot point to further Deku's motivation and contrast his own power level compared to his peers, and I know its not that serious, but we really enjoyed trying to fugure out how it would all shake out if the quirk apprehension tests were given some more realistic thoughts.
If you disagree with any of the rankings do feel free to comment, I think a lot of us probably have different ideas on how someone might creatively apply 1A's quirks in this scenario, and I'm hardly about to declare myself the final authority on the topic.

Note
dropping in with a jayvik (or specifically Viktor) brainworm that won't leave me alone because I love reading your thoughts and meta: I adore the way the two of them become partners where Viktor falls in love with and is convinced by Jayce's hextech research and dream by reading his notes. but reading research notes often means very little if you don't have context for the subject matter to decide whether it's convincing or not.
I'm sure Viktor had some knowledge of material physics or crystalline structures or something that would have helped but to me it seems more likely that Viktor just ... also had done some thinking or reading about the arcane in his own time. enough to be convinced quickly that Jayce was onto something and see what he was missing. I doubt he was as single minded about it as Jayce but what if he also was sneaking in some light reading on Forbidden Knowledge during his time at the academy. so sue him. boys will be boys.
Ahh thank you! Oh this is a fascinating idea. Viktor seems like the kind of person who, if you tell him that just learning about something is Forbidden, he'll be like ok well fuck that, and will set out to learn everything he can about it. He also seems like someone who has the right mix of inquisitiveness and compassion where if something is considered scary or taboo or just ignored, he would be like, well, why? And get curious about it and try to understand it. And we know he doesn't have any qualms about breaking a few rules and/or laws if he thinks it's worth it.
So yeah I can believe he might have sought out knowledge about the arcane as an Academy student. And then once he becomes Heimerdinger's assistant, he might have access to books and other materials that aren't available to the general public, or even other stuff like Jayce's equipment that was confiscated for being dangerous or illegal. Heimerdinger's office looks like it has a shit ton of books in it, some of which are probably hundreds of years old, and what looks like maybe a vault?? where Jayce's equipment and possibly other Forbidden Stuff is being kept.
I'm always fascinated by the look on Viktor's face when Jayce first blurts out that he was trying to create magic.
It's not shock or immediate skepticism but awe and wonder and curiosity. I completely agree with you that reading Jayce's notebook is the moment he falls in love, but this is the moment he becomes interested in this guy.
I also think it's notable that the line they cut to Viktor on is Councillor Shoola saying "Arcane talents are something you're born with." And then we see Viktor, who was born with nothing and has been struggling to rise above the circumstances of his birth his whole life.
The arcane is power, right? It's the power to remake the world according to your will. And Viktor's not a power-hungry guy in the traditional mwahahaha evil villain way. But he has had plenty of experiences of powerlessness due to things he can't change (class, disability, illness). And here is this guy who is saying there is a way to access this power not just by being born lucky, but through science and technology, which happen to be what Viktor's good at. Of course he immediately starts paying attention.

Hi!! Could I get some harry hook x male!reader where reader is the eldest child of Anna and Kristoff please? Also maybe reader looks just like his mum but acts like his dad? Thanks and sorry if it's too specific fjdjdjvjs
Always - Harry Hook x male!reader
a/n: I honestly think that reader personaliy is more like anna han kristoff. somehow i really struggled wih that. i lowkey hate this but i still hope you enjoy his <3
warnings: no use of y/n, making out, small fight/angst, ew emotions, I love some good drama, i hate this tbh, not proofread

When Mal decided to open the barrier forever, it was cerainly an adjusment for everyone.
The Vks that came over to auradon were enrolled into auradon prep and all assigned an auradon student to help them settle in and answer any questions they might have.
You weren't the biggest fan of that arrangementt. Not because you didnt like or trust the vks, you were actually quite close with all of the cour four. You just werent a big people person. So having to share your dorm with someone you dont know and most likely having them at your side 24/7? Not ideal for you.
Especially when you heard who you were going to be paired with.
But Mal had basically begged you to help.
"Please. I know you dont like this but he is kind of difficult and i know that you could handle him. I dont know anyone else that could."
So you reluctantly agreed.
Mal was right. Harry Hook was certainly difficult. He was really stuck in ways and refused to change. He refused to follow any rules, he was mean and he hated school. And the worst thing? He was stupidly hot.
Now, you hated school just as much, and you did skip a few lessons here and there but you had respect for your teachers and your peers. And you knew that unfortunately school was important for your future.
Usually you couldnt care less if other people got on trouble but harry was your responsibility now, so everytime he got into trouble, you were getting dragged into it. And you hated it.
So thats how you ended up in fairy godmothers office for the 7th time that week (it was thursday) sitting next to Harry, who just looked bored while you were about to beat him up.
This has been happeneing for almost 3 months at this point.
"This can not keep going on. Harry If you cannot follow the rules and integrate yourself into Auradon then we might be forced to take stronger action."
Back in your dorm Harry threw himself onto his bed.
"Well that a tad overdramatic aye?"
You couldnt hold it in anymore.
"HARRY! THIS IS NOT A GAME! YOU KEEP GETTING IN TROUBLE SIMPLY FOR THE SAKE OF IT AND YOU HURT OTHERS. ARE YOU AWARE OF THE FACT THAT YOU ARE BASICALLY A FEW OFFENSES AWAY FROM EXPULSION?! AND IF THAT HAPPENS YOU BASICALLY HAVE NO CHANCE ANYMORE TO DO ANYTHING! NOT ONLY THAT BUT YOU RUIN MY REPUTATION WITH YOUR BEHAVIOUR AS WELL. JUST THINK ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE THAN YOURSELF FOR ONCE IN YOUR GODDAMN LIFE!"
Without looking at him you stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind you.
The rest of your day was spend ranting to Mal and Evie about Harry. Mal hat texted Uma during your rant, telling her to speak with Harry. He would probably listen to her. She was his best friend after all.
You dreaded going to bed that night. Just being in the same room with him.
Uma left your Room just before you arrived, so when you entered Harry was sitting on his bed, a conflicted expression on his face.
You decided to ignore him, just grabbing a pair of sweatpants and heading to the bathroom to change for bed.
When you exited the beathroom agin harry had also changed into sweatpants. GREY sweatpants.
Fuck. Was he trying to kill you?
His head perked up at the sound of the bathroom door.
"Hey..."
You looked over at him.
"What Hook?"
He looked a little conflicted still, which confused you. Why the sudden change in mood?
"Look... I'm nae good at this but- fuck..." He sighed exxasperated. "I wanted to apologize."
You head snapped to him again In surprise.
"What?"
"I acted like a total dickhead." He started ranting, trying to get it all outbefore he mentally talked himself out of it. " I didnt care how I might hurt ya. And I don't even have a good reason for that. I was just scared. I was scared of being vulnerable. All I have ever known was the Isle. I am used to hiding myself behind a Tough outside and I was scared to change from that."
Harry quickly wiped his eyes of the tears swimming in them, hoping you wouldnt notice. But you did.
You were shocked by his sudden and surprisingly honest outburst. For a few very long seconds you just stared at each other.
"Harry...." You took a slow step towards him. "I'm sorry. I should've realized how hard this would be. And I know it will be difficult, but i promise you that from now on you wont have to hide anymore. You're safe here."
Now, standing right before harry, you layed your hand on his shoulder. Harrys eyes met yours, once again swimming with tears but a small smile gacing his lips.
"Thank ye."
You reached up to wipe the tear that had fallen from his eye, your hand resting on harrys cheek, his head leaning into your touch.
You noticed how close you two had gotten. Your eyes flickering from harrys eyes to his lips for a split second.
"Harry?" Your noses brushed against each other ever so slightly.
"Yea?" His voice was barely a whisper.
"I really hope I'm not reading this wrong," You voice matched his. "but can I kiss you?"
Harry was silent, and for a few excruciating second you truly thought you were wrong. Harry was into guys, you knew that much. He didnt hide that part about himself. But did he like you?
"Yes please."
A small sigh of relief left your mouth as you leaned in, your lips moving against his. Harrys hands moved to your hips, gripping at the exposed skin, thanks to your lack of shirt. In turn your hands wrapped around his neck, your fingers gripping onto his hair.
When you parted for air, you kept your eyes closed, your foreheads leaning against each other.
For a few seconds all you could hear was you heavy breathing and your own heartbeat, loud in your ears, before Harry leaned in and kissed you again. His hands pulling you flush against his bare chest by your hips.
Once again you pulled back, this time a little more, looking into each others eyes.
"Thank ye, darlin"
"Always."

Submissive and huh?

Minors DNI
Summary: Your friend Taerae recently learned a new term and wants your thoughts. Explaining it might help him understand properly, but do you have the strength to tell him.
Warnings: Male Reader, Idol Taerae, Student Reader, Lewd faces/Ahegao, Mention of arousal and breeding
Wordcount: 1.2k
Math classes had been kicking your ass all semester and tutoring from the professor wasn't working out. You'd ended up being assigned a study partner. The program was meant for students struggling with the class to help each other. That's how you met Taerae.
He didn't originally introduce himself as an idol, especially since it was an online class. No one had seen his face. But when you met up with him for the first time to study together, you instantly recognized him from TV. You hit it off over a shared hate for math and spent more time together outside class.
He'd complain about his idol life issues and you'd give him any notes from class he'd missed.
You'd just gotten home from a late-night study session at the library. As if it knew, your phone lit up with a text as you sat on your bed.
TR: Yo! Y/N, I met some fans while out with the members today!
YN: Cool. Don't you meet fans wherever you go?
TR: Well these stuck out!
YN: How?
TR: Well, I noticed them, a bunch of guys, giggling in the convenience store and pointing at me and Hao while we were shopping. I didn't want to embarrass them so I just played it cool and ignored them. But then they came up to me!
YN: Okay, some brave fans? That's it?
TR: Just wait a sec!
TR: They came to me and told me they were fans. But more specifically, MY fans! Of course, I was happy to hear, but they were foreigners because they used a term I didn’t know.
YN: What term?
TR: Submissive and Breedable?
TR: I know what submissive means, they mean I'm not an aggressive person. That's not entirely true, but I'm submissive at times.
You looked at your phone, blinking a few times. Some "fans" dared to say that!?
TR: I can't find anything when I look it up, it's probably slang, right?
Maybe telling him that his fans want to breed him wasn't the best thing to tell your friend. He was just too wholesome for that.
YN: Yeah, it is, but it's not something cool. No one says it really, it's not the trend anymore.
TR: Really? I know trends, I'm not old, but I haven’t heard of that.
YN: See? There's no reason to worry, just fans being weird.
TR: Well, the photo they wanted was also...off.
YN: Off how?
TR: They wanted me to stick my tongue out and look up at the camera, which was super high above me. To be honest–it felt a little embarrassing to pose like that.
You shook your head trying not to imagine his cute self making lewd faces for a group of boys, but it was hard. And so were you.
YN: You should be more careful, they could use photos like that weirdly.
TR: What do you mean?
YN: Let's drop it. Subject change, what are you doing now?
TR: I'm getting ready for bed, I just got under the covers.
You looked at the clock, midnight was on its face.
YN: Oh shit, I didn't even realize. You should sleep!
TR: No, no, I'm pretty awake. Plus, it's nice talking to you. Did you want to video call while you get ready for bed?
You’d done it before, talking on video call into the night, but it was always a little like Taerae just wanted to see you.
YN: Sure, I'll call you.
You pressed the video call button on your phone. It showed your reflection as you waited, automatically you straightened your hair a little and kicked some stuff on the floor out of frame.
Taerae answered the phone with a smile, the camera close to his face.
You laughed as you set your phone on your desk, "Well hello to you too, why so close?"
"No reason, I just want to see you closely."
"Well, I can see you so closely I can count your pores," You scoffed as you went into your closet to find pajamas for the night.
"Is it weird I'm holding it so close?"
"A little, but it's no big deal. If you don't wanna show yourself then why'd you wanna video call?"
Taerae didn't answer.
"Are you still thinking about what those guys said?"
He shuffled in bed, "Mmhm."
"I promise it's nothing bad."
"Then why don't you just tell me?"
You sighed, "Okay, fine, I'll spill."
Taerae's eyes peered curiously at the camera as he waited for you to come out of your closet. You settled on wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt and shorts. You returned to find Taerae's eyes filled with impatience.
You swallowed awkwardly, "You already know what the submissive part means, but the other part..."
"Breedable," Taerae reminded you.
"Yeah–It means," You struggled to find a good way to break it to him with that look in his eyes. So full of trust and purity. "It means, they wanna do it with you."
Taerae's expression dropped into surprise, "Oh, that's it? I read about that kind of stuff of fans wanting me to have sex with them. That's not so bad."
"Well, breedable means, specifically where you'd be the one getting fucked. Likely by a man. Who wants to... finish in you."
You couldn't bring yourself to look at the screen to see his expression. He'd fallen silent, thinking of a response. It felt like ten minutes passed until he broke the silence.
Taerae's voice was deep and serious, "Y/n."
"Yeah?"
"Look at the screen." You looked at the screen to see Taerae in bed, holding the camera above him to show off his shirtless torso that was mostly covered by the bed sheet except for his collarbone and neck. "Am I breedable right now?"
You felt warm in your face as you answered, "Yeah, I-I guess."
"Submissive, too?"
"Sure," You said as you looked down at your hands.
"Yes or no! Sure isn't good enough, and look at me!"
You complied, looking at him. He smiled before making a face; his eyes looking up at the camera as he stuck out his tongue and held up a peace sign with his other hand.
"Jesus, Taerae!" You looked away quickly. Your heart was in your ears, pounding as the image of sweet Taerae's lewd face was plastered behind your eyelids.
He laughed loudly. "I am, aren't I? Submissive and breedable. I take it as a compliment, they like me that much! To be honest, you look all shy... You look a little submissive too."
You moved your phone so he couldn't see you anymore.
"I was kidding! Don't hide from me!" Taerae's muffled voice shouted from the speaker of your phone.
After you calmed down, you turned your phone back over to see him still there. Still shirtless, and holding his phone at the same seductive angle.
"You're so weird!" You yelled at Taerae, who just giggled.
"And you still like me anyway. Even with all my breedable energy."
"I'm going to hang up–"
"What!? We gotta see you do the pose too, what if you're more breedable than me, we should test how–"
You cut him off as you pressed the red dial button. You turned your phone off before he could call you again. You lay in bed, alone in the dark, thinking about Taerae's face.
And in the privacy of your home, you test if you can also feel submissive and breedable, making Taerae's new iconic look. A secret he'll never know about... As if you didn't already have a big secret.

Platonic ninjago zane with a student darling please?
Sure! I struggle with writing Zane due to how his character is but... I hope I do him justice ^^;
Yandere! Platonic! Zane with Student! Darling
Pairing: Platonic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Overprotective behavior, Manipulation, Isolation, Paranoia, Implied kidnapping, Violence, Stalking, Dubious companionship.
Honestly, I can see Zane with a student of his own to teach.
As the master of ice, eventually he'd need a successor (I never finished Ninjago so this is HC obviously).
Zane's even been a teacher before when Wu had the academy.
While he struggles with human empathy at times as a Nindroid, Zane has a lot of knowledge.
Due to this, I can see Zane being a teacher who has a lot to teach.
Not only that, but it's canon that Zane gets attached to people quickly and was built to protect.
If Zane got attached to someone he was supposed to teach as the new master of ice, Imagine if he just... took it too far?
At first he's a bit curious towards the idea of having a student.
He's taught classes before... but he hasn't really had an official apprentice before just to himself.
Lloyd was technically taught by all the ninja... but you...
You were just meant for him to teach, for him to mold into the newest elemental of ice.
Sure, he's a robot who can be rebuilt at any time...
But you're meant to be his back up.
That, or at the very least, be a ninja who finds your own element.
Zane gets attached to you fast.
He's been known to get attached fast.
The other ninja know Zane was quick to view them as family and he was quick to fall in love too.
So when they see Zane positively interacting with his new student, I'm sure even they knew Zane was going to be close with you.
Zane views you as family, like teaching a little sibling.
He takes his role as master and student seriously, often racking through his memory banks to find new material and techniques to share.
In training there's times Zane is... rough.
He does it to make sure you're capable of defending yourself, but sometimes he forgets you're human.
That is until the other ninjas remind him... That and Zane's scanners end up analyzing the wounds on your skin.
He feels horrible that he's hurt you.
Zane ends up trying to balance how harsh he is during training.
He begins to realize he hates seeing you hurt.
While he has trouble with understanding others emotions at times, it's clear he still feels the need to keep you out of harm.
In fact, I can imagine his code corrupting and that's what makes him yandere.
After all his code is based on one specific phrase by his creator:
"You were built to protect those who cannot protect themselves."
Which, when he sees you struggle with his training...
May make him feel the only way to protect you is to keep you out of danger.
At first you notice this by Zane going too easy on you during training.
Despite you knowing his true strength, you still see him holding back.
You ask him why, he admits he doesn't want to hurt you like he has other times.
You tell him you can handle it, that you want to get better!
Zane just declines, claiming he'll start off easy.
Except he never does go up in difficulty with you as his student.
Eventually he focuses on testing your knowledge on lessons and strategy more than your physical prowess.
The other ninja offer to help you, but Zane often finds out about it.
Zane's attempts to protect you actually hinder you as his student.
Since you're not trained enough due to his glitches, there's times you end up failing in actual combat.
The other ninja try to train you while Zane watches...
Yet they can tell Zane hates it.
It's less about empathy and more... a corrupted understanding of his original programming.
He feels, as your mentor, he should protect you.
Yet it appears Zane has trouble allowing you to learn by yourself.
Even when the other ninja are careful you aren't too hurt, Zane oddly can't bring himself to trust them.
Some of the others, maybe Cole, comment on it with teasing.
Zane's acting like an overly protective brother... Zane's acting like a helicopter mom...
Zane ignores this.
All he really cares about is looking after you... even though training should be what he focuses on.
The others try to encourage him to go back to how he originally did things... Even if it was a bit rough, you learned.
Zane, however, just gets reminded of when he hurt you.
That one event just makes him think that anyone can hurt you.
So, Zane goes from a mentor who is cautious yet knowledgeable around you...
To someone obsessive about keeping to his goal of protecting you.
Zane hates leaving you out of his sight....
When the others try to get him to stop training you and transfer your training to someone else...
Zane actually snaps a bit, getting a bit violent with his peers.
He tries not to hurt them too badly... but he does end up rushing off to be alone afterwards.
He may even be finding ways to keep an eye on you while he calms himself.
Not only does Zane have ninja stealth, but he also can connect to electronics to watch you.
The other ninja try their best to keep Zane out of your training... maybe they allow some monitored lessons.
Yet afterwards Zane seems to struggle with letting you go.
Zane doesn't mean to do anything bad....
He really does want to help train you.
Yet, the feelings caused by his glitched policy corrupt his intentions...
In his eyes, teaching you won't protect you for long...
Isolation, however...
That would guarantee your safety in his eyes.
He starts executing such plans by dismissing the other ninja around you, often getting a bit aggressive to make them back off.
Then he tells all your friends you have training to do with him... ushering you away into his arms.
If you tried to run, called him insane, told him he needed help...
Zane denies your words.
In fact, he calmly tells you you're wrong as he freezes your legs to the floor.
He isn't the one who needs help...
You need help... His help.
After all... He feels he needs to protect you.
If he keeps you away from everything but himself...
There will be no need to train you... Not with him there to look after you.

How to Stay Motivated as a Writer.
I ran a poll to celebrate reaching 50 reblogs because you guys are amazing, and this topic won the poll.
(This is a bit lengthy, but I advise you to read to the very end. These are the kind of tips you rarely find without a fee, but for your amazing support so far, you get this from me for free.)
Let's dive in!
Before I became a writing coach, lack of motivation was something I battled with. Writing started to feel like a waste of my time, but whenever I stopped, I still found my way back somehow.
After a few more months of struggling and finding a clear routine that worked for me, I became a writing coach. Believe me when I say that it was such a commitment, and you'd never know until you get your first student.
I only knew how to stay motivated as an individual. After two students, I realized that motivation was also something they struggled with, and as their coach, it became my duty to offer solutions. In fact, nine out of ten writers struggle with this same problem, so I came up with the 'why and what' technique.
What is the 'why and what' technique?
This technique is a template to figure out the main reason a writer isn't motivated at the current time, which allows for the provision of tailored and personalized solutions to solve the specific problem. In other words: Understanding the why (the main reason for the lack of motivation at the time) to figure out the what (effective solution to solve the main reason).
Lack of motivation is pretty subjective and varies widely. Giving a particular piece of advice may work for some and not for others, which is why I ensured my technique benefits all.
I'll give examples of common reasons writers lack motivation for writing using the template. If you don't find any that relate to you, write it in the comments and get a personalized solution from me.
1. Lack of Inspiration
Why:
- Feeling uninspired by current projects.
- Overwhelmed by the vastness of ideas.
- Stuck in a creative rut.
What:
- Change your environment: Sometimes a new setting can spark creativity. Try writing in a different location, like a park or a café.
- Consume creative content: Read books, watch movies, or listen to music that inspires you.
- Engage in Free Writing: Set a timer for 10 minutes and write whatever comes to mind without worrying about structure or grammar.
- Take a step back: You are no less of a writer if you decide to take a break and watch other writers from afar. Personally, it's difficult to write when I'm not inspired. I find myself editing more than usual and, at times, discarding the piece I spent hours on. So for a little while, I only engaged online and learned other ways to improve my skills with the time on my hands.
2. Fear of Failure
Why:
- Worrying that your writing isn't good enough.
- Comparing yourself to other writers.
- Fear of negative feedback.
What:
- Set small goals: Break down your writing project into manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- Seek constructive feedback: Share your work with trusted friends or writing groups who can provide supportive and constructive criticism.
- Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Always remember that our writing styles differ from one another, and that is what makes us unique as writers.
3. Lack of Time
Why:
- Busy schedules and other commitments.
- Difficulty prioritizing writing.
What:
- Create a writing schedule: Dedicate specific times in your day or week for writing and stick to it.
- Use writing prompts: Short prompts can help you get started quickly and make the most of limited time.
- Eliminate distractions: Find a quiet space and turn off notifications to focus solely on writing.
- Create or join writing challenges: Activities like the 3-day writing challenge, writing a novel in 6 months, the 7-day character creation challenge, the fantasy writers challenge, etc., have specific guidelines tailored to helping writers stay motivated and at the same time productive in limited times.
4. Perfectionism
Why:
- Striving for perfection in every sentence.
- Reluctance to move forward until everything is perfect.
What:
- Embrace the draft: Accept that your first draft doesn't have to be perfect. Focus on getting your ideas down first.
- Set time limits: Give yourself a set amount of time to write and then move on, even if it's not perfect.
- Practice self-compassion: Remind yourself that it's okay to make mistakes and that writing is a process.
-Listen to writing podcasts or join a valuable writing newsletter: You will learn more about the writing industry and writing processes of other established writers, their wins, struggles, difficulties, appreciations, etc., which can serve as an assurance that you are facing the processes of a typical writer.
Here's a podcast and newsletter for writers I totally recommend—The Shit No One Tells You About Writing. You can listen to The Shit No One Tells You About Writing on platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify or sign up for their newsletter.
5. Burnout
Why:
- Writing too much without breaks.
- Feeling exhausted and mentally drained.
- Stressed out from other engagements
What:
- Take regular breaks: Schedule breaks during your writing sessions to rest and recharge.
- Engage in other hobbies: Spend time on activities you enjoy outside of writing to refresh your mind.
- Practice mindfulness: Techniques like meditation or deep breathing can help reduce stress and improve focus.
- Listen to music: It's an amazing mind therapy.
6. Lack of Support
Why:
- Feeling isolated in your writing journey.
- Lack of encouragement from others.
What:
- Join writing communities: Connect with other writers through online forums, local writing groups, or social media.
- Find a writing buddy: Partner with another writer to share progress, provide feedback, and offer mutual support.
- Attend workshops and events: Participate in writing workshops, conferences, or webinars to learn and network with others.
- Get a writing coach: Find a coach that will dedicate their time assisting you through your writing processes.
7. Working on Too Many Drafts Simultaneously
Why:
- Overwhelmed by multiple projects.
- Difficulty prioritizing which story to focus on.
- Constantly switching between drafts, leading to a lack of progress.
What:
- Prioritize projects: Choose one or two main projects to focus on and set the others aside temporarily. This helps you concentrate your efforts and make significant progress.
- Create a project schedule: Allocate specific times or days for each project. For example, work on one story in the mornings and another in the afternoons.
- Set clear milestones: Break each project into bit-sized, manageable tasks with deadlines. Celebrate when you reach these milestones to stay motivated.
- Limit new ideas: Keep a notebook or digital file for new ideas, but resist the urge to start new projects until you complete your current ones.
- Use a timer: Work on one project for a set amount of time (e.g., 25 minutes using the Pomodoro Technique) before taking a break or switching to another task.
8. Frustration of Not Completing Any Stories
Why:
- Feeling stuck or losing interest in projects.
- Perfectionism preventing you from finishing.
- Lack of a clear plan or direction.
What:
- Set realistic goals: Define what "completion" means for each project (e.g., finishing a first draft, reaching a certain word count) and work towards that.
- Embrace imperfection: Accept that your first draft doesn't have to be perfect. Focus on getting the story down, and you can revise it later.
- Find accountability: Share your goals with a writing buddy or group who can help keep you on track and provide encouragement.
- Reward yourself: Plan small rewards for completing sections of your work. This can be anything from a favorite snack to a relaxing activity.
- Reflect on your progress: Regularly review what you've accomplished to remind yourself of your progress and stay motivated.
- Set a clear outline for your story: Having a clear and detailed outline for a story makes it difficult to run out of ideas.
- Share your achievements with others: Achievement posts are one of the posts that receive more engagement from people. I'm quite aware of Substack. The notes with the highest engagement have to do with achievements. People find those notes empowering and inspiring. Share your wins with others and let them celebrate with you.
9. Working on Too Many Drafts
Why:
- Perfectionism leading to endless revisions.
- Difficulty deciding when a draft is "good enough."
- Fear of publishing an imperfect work.
What:
- Set a draft limit: Decide on a maximum number of drafts (e.g., three to five) before moving on to the next stage.
- Establish clear goals for each draft: Define what you want to achieve with each draft (e.g., plot consistency, character development, grammar).
- Seek external feedback: Get input from beta readers or a professional editor after a set number of drafts to gain fresh perspectives.
- Create a timeline: Set deadlines for each draft to avoid getting stuck in a cycle of endless revisions.
10. Trying to Earn with Your Writing
Why:
- Financial pressure to monetize your writing.
- Balancing creative passion with commercial viability.
- Navigating the competitive market.
What:
- Diversify income streams: Explore various ways to earn from your writing, such as freelancing, self-publishing, blogging, or offering writing services.
- Build an online presence: Use social media, a personal blog, or platforms like Tumblr, TikTok, and Instagram to showcase your work and connect with potential readers and clients.
Remember, If you don't find any that relate to you, write it in the comments and get a personalized solution from me.
- Offer exclusive content: Create special content or giveaways for your audience to increase engagement and loyalty.

Cardigan - John Price x F!Teacher!Reader

Part 2: Midnight Rain
summary: you get yourself in a pickle a/n: hi! I return again! I'm sorry it's short, but I'm trying a new method of posting. Instead of aiming for a specific word count (which leads to me getting writer's block and not posting ANYTHING), I write until I'm satisfied with what I'm trying to achieve. Hopefully, I've achieved that goal, and y'all like it :) Blessed be! << Previous | Next >>
You drummed your fingers against the notebook in your lap and gnawed on the top of your pen. It was late, even by your standards; the sun had long since set, and dinner eaten hours ago. But you were up, sitting in the dark in your living room, heavy rain pelting your old windows. You were trying to pull together a new lesson plan for the following day. A few curious students had started asking questions about the modern military. Like, key differences between military strategies used in the time they were studying and today. And, of course, yet again, you made promises that you were struggling to keep. And you always keep your promises to your students.
Fuck.
The internet wasn’t helping at all. You didn’t study military strategy in any of your courses. Was that even a thing?
The last thing you wanted to do was call him. You were so confident that you could solve your problem yourself, at nine o’clock. Now, it was past midnight, and you were absolutely desperate.
Fuck.
Before your tired brain can flood with guilt and change its mind, you grab your phone from your nightstand and tap into your recent calls log. Your stomach churned, anxiety bubbling up with every trill. God, it’s so fucking late to be calling. It felt like you were split in two. One half of you was praying that his phone was on silent (you know it’s not) or he’ll sleep through the ringing (he won’t), while the other–the miserable, exhausted half–needed him to pick up.
The latter won out.
“Y/N? Are you alright?”
John’s deep, sleepy voice made you feel guilty and incredibly happy that you’d woken him up. Soft and grumbly, rolling in his chest; it made you feel soft and warm inside…
Not the point of the call.
“Hi, John. I’m completely fine, I just…” You took a deep breath, the heel of your free hand pressed into one of your dry, worn-out eyes. “I know you’re this big important captain, and you have work in the morning, but I’m in a bit of a pickle and need a massive favor.”
There was a slight rustling on the other end like he had turned slightly to check the nearby time. “It’s one o’clock in the morning, love,” he mumbled.
You felt even worse. “I know, I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me,” you begged, running a hand over the top of your head. “One of my kids asked about the military. It sparked a whole discussion in class, and I may have overstated my knowledge. I barely know anything about it, and my brain is turning to mush. I’m so tired I wanna cry, and-”
He quickly cut off your rambling. “Woah, hey. Slow down there. What’s going on?” he asked, suddenly sounding much more awake.
That brought you pause. You honestly hadn’t thought what you would ask if John actually answered the phone through. It was one o’clock in the morning, which John had correctly pointed out, and your brain wasn’t operating at full capacity.
“I was…wondering if you could give me a lesson. Because I’m super tired, and I like to hear you talk.”
“…You do?”
“Yeah. I’ve learned a lot from you just…talking to me? But I’m a history teacher. I’m an expert on wars, not war.”
There was some shuffling on the phone. On the other line, John was leaning over the edge of his bed, searching blindly for his little pocket planner in the pile of clothes on the floor. The rustling stopped when he placed the device on his pillow, rifling through the calendar. He sniffed and was quiet for a moment, while you nibbled anxiously at your pen. Again.
The silence finally broke with a tired sniffle from John. “I can do you better. Why don’t I come to your classes tomorrow?” he asked.
You froze, pen still between your teeth. John? Coming to your school? Spending the day with your students? That would be the equivalent of introducing your boyfriend to your children.
“…Really?”
“Sure.”
Could you even call him your boyfriend? You’d been on a few dates, sure, over the last…two months? No, it was closer to three. Had it been that long already? You did some quick math in your head. You’d gone on about one date a week, with a few canceled due to last-minute commitments. Still, about one date a week, over three months…
Holy shit.
“John, I’m sure you’re busy. I couldn’t-”
“Not at all,” he hummed, cutting you off. “Besides, it would take me ‘til class tomorrow to give you a good enough rundown, and the boss loves shite like this.”
“I thought you were the boss?”
You could practically hear a small smile tugging at John’s lips. The expression was a familiar one. The corner of his mouth quirked up, shifting his beard and creating happy wrinkles near his eyes. His nose would scrunch up a bit, too, especially if you were out in cold weather.
“Everybody has a boss, sweetness. Myself included.”
Christ. Not the pet names. And especially not in the tired, gravelly tone his voice was currently in. John Price was going to be the death of you, even in his unfocused state.
You unfolded your legs from underneath you and moved your notebook onto the coffee table. Your resolve was fading, and you couldn’t be bothered to argue. While you did feel bad about dragging John to your school to fix the problem you created, you weren’t sure you had any other option. Accept defeat? To a group of teenagers? Absolutely not. You’d never live it down. You sighed, rubbing tiredly at your eyes. “If you’re sure…”
“I am.”
A soft smile crossed your face. “Is this just a ploy to meet my kids?”
“Maybe.”
Your sleepy giggles were like music to John’s ears. The sound alone was worth the favor. As if he wouldn’t have done it anyway, just to ease your stress. He would take any and every opportunity to make your day easier or make you happy. What he wouldn’t give to hear that laugh in person, laying beside you in your bed–
No. John’s a good man. A gentleman, he would say. A man who was perfectly capable of not acting on his urges and thoughts. At least, not in person. However, in the privacy of his own home? That was a different story.
“Thank you so much, John.”
Right. You’re still on the phone. He heard a soft click on your end of the call.
“That’d better be you closing your laptop, I’m hearing.”
“It is.”
“Good girl.” You blushed furiously. Fuck. “Get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Goodnight.”

confession: i feel guilty liking your yukio analysis because i am 100% a yukio hater but still agree with nearly every point and that feels almost contradictory.
but anyways, please keep writing cuz you’re stuffs are probably the best in the fandom :)
The series anon is talking about is here, here, and here ദ്ദി ( ᵔ ᗜ ᵔ )
So here's the thing, you're free to dislike Yukio. He can just really rub you the wrong way and that's fine. You do not have to like a character to acknowledge they're well written, and sometimes being well written is exactly what's so off putting about them. They're too real or too close to someone or something you dislike.
The reason I'm doing this series is because I've noticed a concerning lack of two things with Yukio.
Basic understanding of the plot that is happening in the story. Some of this is on the anime adaptations because woof, the first two seasons made some major goofs that have stuck with us for better or worse, but mostly worse. It did something horrid to every character, and we are living in the ripple (but more like tsunami) of those missteps. The anime painted Yukio a very specific way and unfortunately a lot of people do not realize it was a biased and typically incorrect way. Those that have gone on to read the manga tend to skim or skip those early chapters as well, so they miss a lot of the things that were different and a lot of the smaller moments that were very important for character development.
A willingness to realize that Yukio is more often than not justified in his actions, even if they negatively impact Rin. Yukio is always expected to behave responsibly and always blamed for everything despite being in the younger half of the exwire group and despite being a fifteen year old teacher, full time student, exorcist, tutor, and on some kind of secret assignment from Mephisto and Shirou for half this manga. He has more responsibility than anyone else ans is expected to never misstep. Rin misunderstands him and belittles him almost constantly and yet even when Rin realizes he has made a mistake about Yukio and his own assumptions, readers do not realize they too have made a mistake. Yukio is far smarter than Rin, so unless we're paying close attention, it can be easy to misread his actions because the reasoning behind them flew over Rin's head.
I truly love this manga and the depths it has. How complicated the story is and how nuanced the characters are. How right and wrong get complicated and how connection and isolation play out. I love that these broken characters are messy and make mistakes and try their best and it's hard to say what was right and wrong in that moment. I love how much it feels like there have been generational curses, but that they can be broken and that the sins of the fathers don't have to carry on past the current generation. That we don't have to do this alone and that we can reach out.
I love how often Rin is wrong or misguided or purposefully not looking and doing something that would help him out because he's either avoiding a confrontation or simply too lazy or was quite frankly a bit stupid. I love that he's quick to throw himself in the way of danger and how that ultimately leads him to struggling to listen and that even in hell, he'll still pull himself back together for those that need him.
I love how Shiemi has so much social anxiety but is so earnest and brave and fights through that to be the person everyone knows they can trust and that she'll square up to any impossible odds to help.
I love that Konekomaru is so scared and has lost so damn much to Satan (not just his parents, his entire temple which would mean a fair amount of extended family and friends that were his birth right to have and known) but will strive to be brave for his friends and is so smart.
I love that Renzou is always a mystery except in the way he is there for his best friends when they really need him. That he always has more cards than he's revealing and the only thing you can trust in is that he'll show up in a way you did not anticipate.
I love that Izumo is such a bitch for so much of this manga, and it's with such a damn good reason. That she will push you away and out until you're in, and then she'll be the biggest ride or die friend you've ever had.
I love that Ryuuji is this big and gruff softie who cries more than most people in the manga and who has such a damn big bleeding heart that his response to having a gun pulled on him is being terrified that his friend is in a really bad place and needs help. (And that he might not have noticed and might have failed, and has to make that right.)
And yes, I love that Yukio is complicated and messy and so damn smart it's hard to keep up with. I love that he's such a contrast to Rin and that the snow boy has built himself such an icy wall around his heart because he was so soft and fragile for so much of his life and will not let himself go back there. How he knows Rin will save him and doesn't think he deserves to be saved and is so scared to let himself be weak.
I truly don't mind if people dislike Yukio. He's a character that contradicts Rin a lot and it's easy to dislike that when you really related to Rin. I really only ask that people dislike Yukio accurately. Blue Exorcist is an incredible story and Yukio Okumura is really well written, and they both deserve that closer look and that time be taken to really understand what it's telling and showing us. So much of the Yukio Hater rhetoric undermines that entirely by taking things out of their context, exaggerating, or misremembering things entirely. It harms Rin as well, and so many of the other characters.
So don't feel guilty if you find yourself enjoying my analysis, it's reasonable that you would if you enjoy Blue Exorcist. Most of what I'm doing is rehashing the story out for you. I'm just taking it slower and point out what is happening specifically with Yukio and some of the background stuff it's easy not to notice. I know this story very well (I have spent far too much time reading and rereading and theorizing) and have picked up on a lot of details that help expand on everything going on because Kato gave us so much detail and some of it you don't notice or pick up on until later. (A lot of Shirou and Yukio stuff makes more sense on a reread because we've gotten a lot more of their backstories now.)
Don't feel guilty if you still want to dislike Yukio, though I would ask that you do a bit of self reflection if your guilt is specifically over disliking Yukio. Why is there guilt there? If it's something with feeling that you'll find your dislike is unjustified, you don't have to justify disliking a character, but it might point out that you were disliking a more fandomized version of Yukio than the real one. It's something that happens to a lot of us.

THE GREAT CRYING LORE OF 2018 AND WHY IT CONNECTS TO "THE EX-MORNING"
There's a bit of lore underlying a scene in KristSingto's 2018 "Our Skyy" episode that we fans have been using to torture each other for years while we waited for a new series to be announced. I bring it back today in the hopes that I can torture indoctrinate share with unsuspecting new people. \:D/
It's about this scene:
If you haven't seen everything preceding it, I'll do a quick recap for you:
"SOTUS" is the story of first-year Kongphob who makes it his purpose in life to be the persistent thorn in third-year head hazer Arthit's side. It's a brilliant slowburn romance that leads neatly into the sequel, "SOTUS S," which follows Arthit's transition from Openly Queer University Student to Closeted Real World Employee and shows how his fear of bigotry affects his relationship with Kongphob, who's still in the safety of school. Their last installment in the "Our Skyy" episode focuses on Arthit struggling with Kongphob's impending departure to Beijing where he'll be studying for the next two years.
In the lead-up to the infamous scene above, Arthit has spent hours doomscrolling forums about long-distance relationships after secretly breaking down into tears twice because he's not coping well with the looming separation. He's doing this, by the way, in a park overlooking the bridge where he and Kongphob had their first kiss. He's doing this, I presume, for optimal self-harm.
Let's watch the scene together, shaaaall we?
That hurt, huh! \:D/
First of all, and I just like to say this to cause unnecessary pain, but I'm pretty sure Kongphob was building up to a proposal before Arthit succumbed to his anxiety spiral, pulled out a trident, and lanced him through the heart with it.
But anyway, I'm not here to talk about the characters. I'm here to talk about the crying.
Because apparently, Krist wasn't supposed to start crying here:
Disclaimer: I can't find the source for this lore, but I've checked in with other Peraya who also remember it from somewhere, so either we're all sharing in a very specific mass hallucination or it's real.
Krist has said in the past that he draws on personal experience when he acts. Some characters, like Arthit, are easier for him to portray because he can align some aspect of himself with the character. Kawi, famously, was one of his biggest challenges because he couldn't wrap his head around a character who avoids communicating when he needs to.
Normally to make himself cry, Krist said he usually thinks of family or other people he loves, but for this scene, he thought specifically of Singto leaving him to study abroad.
Before Singto officially left GMMTV to go freelance in 2022, he'd always talked about going overseas to attend film school. I don't have any source for this, but since their "Our Skyy" episode wasn't based on anything, it's possible they based the script for this episode on Singto's real-life plans to study abroad and applied them to Kongphob's canon desire to study economics in graduate school.
So when they filmed this scene, Krist started crying much earlier than Arthit was meant to, and they just kind of had to roll with it. He was too overwhelmed by the thought of Singto leaving, it just overflowed.
So now that you know The Lore, have a watch of that scene again. That's Krist thinking about Singto leaving him someday.
Why do I bring this up, you're wondering?
WELL.
"The Ex-Morning" is an exes-to-lovers series, right? And unless it's been altered in the revisions for some reason, the premise is that Tamtawan (Singto) broke up with Pathapi (Krist) in university and then moved overseas, only coming back years later to help Pathapi patch up his reputation as a reporter.
We know flashbacks were filmed, and there's a scene in the pilot teaser where we see Tamtawan end things with Pathapi, so I'm pretty sure that's going to be in the full series.
And I think it was filmed waaay back in Q6, because one of the crew is seen crying while filming.
Since Krist made himself cry in "Our Skyy" with the thought of Singto someday leaving him, I'm willing to bet every limb I have as well as one of my chocolate Easter eggs that he used Singto's actual leaving to make himself cry this time.
And seeing how well he did in "Our Skyy," I can see why drawing on experience would make even the crew cry.
Oh, and just to twist the knife, after Singto officially left GMMTV, the pandemic and his father's health interfered with his plans, so he didn't end up going overseas. Krist, who'd understood and supported him going, saw him Not Going Anywhere and convinced himself that Singto had just used that as an excuse to get away from working with him. They talked about it when Singto first came back, and while Krist was smiling and laughing during the interview itself, Singto said he had to talk Krist down from sobbing over the phone for a Very Long Time to convince him.
He might have supported Singto leaving to pursue his dream, but from the way Krist's described it, he missed Singto every day he wasn't by his side.
Basically, I think this series is a form of therapy.
Get ready to cry along, y'all. \:D/

Struggling with Setting and Plot
[Ask edited for length]
enzoid23 asked: I can easily make characters/relationships but the setting and plot are difficult for me. I like stories where characters are stuck together in a new place and have to learn to accept it or find a way to escape, which is a basic concept, but I can't figure out how to do it. I'm trying my to avoid copying other stories but I'm not sure where to draw the line between that and inspiration either. There's too many gaps, such as the how and the where and how many characters. I keep throwing in as much stuff as i can whether it fits or not, like a Mary Sue, but it's plot instead of a character.
First, since you asked about copying vs inspiration, start by reading these posts:
Taking Inspiration from Another Story’s Premise Similarities vs Plagiarism Plagiarism vs Reference vs Inspiration Hopefully that will help you get comfortable with borrowing ideas from other sources but making them into something new and unique to you.
Next, being able to come up with characters is great, but unless those characters are rooted in a particular setting or situation, it doesn't help much with world building and plot. And while some writers can find a plot within a setting, I think for most writers its easier to start with the plot, and once you have the beginnings of a premise, it's not too hard to expand a plot from there. As luck would have it, you already have the beginnings of a premise:
People get stuck together in a new place and have to learn to accept it or find a way to escape.
Now we can look at that and start asking questions. Perhaps the easiest question to start with is "do they learn to accept it, or do they find a way to escape?" Which one? Because those are two very different goals. Choosing one and eliminating the other tightens up your premise:
People get stuck together in a new place and have to learn to accept it.
All right... I think the next logical question is who gets stuck together in a place? Is it two people? Three people? Five people? Twenty-six people? One-hundred people? You don't even have to figure out the exact number right now, but just knowing whether this story is about two people, a few people, a small group of people, a bigger group of people, or a huge group of people is going to really narrow things down.
A small group of people get stuck together in a new place and have to learn to accept it.
Okay... where do they get stuck and how? Let's brainstorm... are these modern day boaters, or a misfit bunch of 18th century buccaneers, who become castaways on a remote island? Are they a group of students whose project gets them sucked into another dimension? Are they far-future astronauts who get stranded on an isolated planet? Keep going...
A small group of students get sucked into another dimension and stranded when their science project goes wrong.
Ahoy, there! A PREMISE!!!
Now you can start brainstorming the specific details... who are these students? Middle school/equivalent? High school/equivalent? University? Graduate school? Where and when is their school located? 1926 Chicago? 1980s London? 2077 Kinshasa? 1926 Shanghai?
A small group of middle school students in 1980's London get sucked into another dimension and stranded when their science project goes wrong.
Time to start world building and brainstorming this alternate dimension. Is it going to be an alternate version of our dimension? Will it be a dimension that's similar to a past time/place on Earth? Will this dimension be like a futuristic city? Will it be something fantastical like a place that feels like an alien city, or like Blade Runner meets Ready Player One? Are there other people in this dimension? Or is this group completely on their own?
Now you can start to think about a conflict... what is the problem that must be resolved by the end of the story? Is it simply a matter of figuring out how to survive in this new place? Are they immediately captured by some faction or army or group, and they must escape, or convince someone that they're not dangerous, or win their freedom somehow? What is the specific goal they work toward in order to reach this resolution? What steps must they achieve? Who or what places obstacles in their path, and what obstacles?
Once you know all of this, you can figure out the nitty-gritty details like how many characters, who each one is specifically, and what their role in the story will be. You can look at various structure templates (like Save the Cat! Writes a Novel, Larry Brooks Story Structure, Dramatica, etc.) for guidance... just don't feel like you have to stick to it exactly. You can also read through posts on my Plot & Story Structure master list for more help with plotting.
I hope this post gets you over the hump, though! ♥

I am SO nervous to ask, but I have an urgent request for Obey Me. Can I ask for Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon, and Beelzebub comforting a burnt-out reader? The reader's mental health has been decreasing for a while, and lately they think nigh everyone sees them as incompetent. They've had to do a LOT of things in a short span of time and they have to do even more tasks that require mINimAL eFFoRT to do in the next week while acting as the unpaid therapist for their friends.
Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon, and Beelzebub (Separate) Comfort Burnt-Out Reader
Pairings: Diavolo x Gn!MC, Barbatos x Gn!MC, Simeon x Gn!MC, Beelzebub x Gn!MC
Warnings: mentions of low mental health, feeling burnt out
Genre: Comfort
Post-Type: Headcanons
Word Count: 730
Summary: In which they comfort you after seeing how burnt-out you are
[A/N: Hiiii, I'm sorry this is so late, I got sick and have just been very busy with work and getting ready for the holidays, but hopefully this is still useful you you :)]
Diavolo:

Diavolo is also a very busy man, as the next in line to be king of the Devildom and being the president of the student council, he knows what it feels like to have a lot going on
He sneaks away from Barbatos and his pile of paperwork to go look for you
When he does find you, he drags you away on a little rendezvous to help you get away from your own mountain of responsibilities even if its only for a few minutes
Usually you both go into town together and have a meal or just browse around in the different stores
On days where Barbatos is keeping a closer eye on him and he can’t sneak off, he encourages you to get any work you have to get done, in his office
Just so he can keep a close eye on you and make sure you take breaks frequently, to lessen the stress and try and keep you from feeling burnt out
Barbatos:

Barbatos is one of the most responsible men out there, but he too is busy with his own duties, as well as watching over Diavolo to keep him on track
Yet despite being busy, he always makes time for you–after all you’re part of his duties, taking care of you comes naturally, yet it’s a task he’d never leave undone
If there’s anything he can do for you to help lighten your workload, he’d do it
Most of his visits include tea time and sometimes he even brings some sweet treats that he baked specifically for you
Back massages are a must as well as maybe a short walk to keep the blood flowing and allow you some fresh air
He’s always there to listen to your concerns or worries, he’s YOUR person that hears you out and offers advice since he knows you never put yourself first in any other part of your life
With Barbatos, you’ll always be first
Simeon:

Simeon notices how tired you look day by day, but when he finally decides to step in, he takes you away from everything so you can clear your mind and just stop worrying about everything for a moment
You both venture to the human world for some well needed sunlight; since the Devildom is dark 24/7 perhaps you needed some Vitamin D to lift you up again
While in the human world, he takes you to all your favorite places in hopes that it will make you happy again
Words of affirmation are a huge deal for Simeon, so he’s always telling you how amazing and brilliant you are in all aspects of your life
He’s a great listener and as a celestial being, he’d probably give you the best advice in return for any of the struggles you express to him
Picnics are his favorite thing to do with you, especially in the human world; he’d prepare all the food and desserts with Luke’s help and pamper you to a relaxing day by the water
Simeon is always concerned for your well being, so he frequently checks in on you and brings you small things throughout the week to try and lighten your mood
Beelzebub:

Of course as soon as Beel notices your change in demeanor he assumes it’s because you aren’t eating well, or not eating enough
So his instinct is to attempt to cook for you to get those well needed nutrients back into your body
This of course fails and he ends up eating half the plate before it even reaches you (that’s still impressive) so he decides to just take you out to eat instead and pays for everything
Aside from feeding you, Beel gets a little clingy
He’d hold you close and steals you away to his and Belphie’s room, shooing everyone away except his twin of course, but he hogs you all to himself for a few hours, only leaving for food and bathroom breaks
You’re forced to relax with him and he reassures you that he’ll take care of any other responsibilities you have for the day
Probably starts talking about random things to make you laugh or distract your mind from anything unwanted that may still be lingering
He’s just a big cuddly teddy bear who wants to make sure you’re well taken care of, both physically and mentally
REQUESTS ARE OPEN :D
