Ignore me if I am getting stuff wrong but I’ve recently begun to think of Viktor’s journey throughout Arcane in the context of the classic gothic sci-fi novel Frankenstein (I specify novel due to not watching any of the movies). It’s fascinating how Viktor is both the creature (“Adam”) and, uhm, Victor Frankenstein himself.
~Essay below the cut for your scrolling ease~

Firstly, it’s clear in season 1 how Viktor = Victor. Both are bright eyed students yearning for knowledge and to make change with professors warning them to not get lost within the ideals to the post they lose their morals. Unlike Victor Frankenstein, Viktor sees the horrors of the Hexcore only after it as killed, yet like the tale of yore he has no strength to beat his creature alone. So Viktor asks Jayce for help.
Now, Jayce is our Frankenstein. Another bright eyed inventor, doomed to create. He brings the dead to life with an unexplained science. Yet unlike Victor, Jayce sees his resuscitated creature with awe at first when it awakens. All his theories are true. Yet it, Viktor, languishes. An unnatural life, an unnatural body, fused with his creature into something new. Like the creature, he flees, desperate to find out who he, who it is.
I would consider Viktor in act 2 of season 2 a continuation of him as the creature, if the creature was seen as a messenger of god. As the creature once said, “.. I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel..” (Chapter 10). Viktor is if the creature were truly allowed to be Adam, to be the first of the new mankind. The next step of Evolution. One could argue he still represent Victor within his scientific pursuits, but I’d retort the creature has as much of a smart mind as his creator, willing to push himself.
Sadly for Viktor, Jayce has no awe left. He has fully embraced being Frankenstein, seeing his choice after the bombing as an inhumane mistake. Jayce declares his goal: to right his wrongs. Unlike both Viktor and Victor, Jayce has the strength to do so. He brings himself infront of his creature. Something made with his friend’s body, wearing his friend’s face, his friend’s memories recognizing Jayce and feeling safe. So Jayce must tighten his grip on the hammer kill it.
When act 3 begins, Viktor is now an amalgamation of both the creature and Frankenstein. He is something new and feared, something that wants and begs for its creator’s love and acknowledgement. He is someone exploring a new field, seeking praise as he delves into waters too deep for people to handle, not noticing the air leaving his lungs as he drowns in the knowledge around him. He creates many a creature, each a cherished doll.
I’d say that Jayce is also a similar amalgamation, something touched and formed by something, someone, higher than him. Someone else’s creature, a horrid reminder of everything that world lost nestled within his hands. He is still Frankenstein, as seen with “My partner died in this room.” (S2, Act III). I think there is more to be said on Jayce’s journey in the context of Frankenstein but it’s 1am and I could make a more official essay later. I felt it important to include this short paragraph, however, before we delve into our conclusion.
The two finally stand face to face once more, the lines are blurred on who is the creature and the creator, but that does not matter now. No matter which of the two they are, they want the other dead. So they fight and the lines blur further and further till the two have to look at eachother, at their human faces in the cosmic plane. The line is gone. Both Viktor and Jayce are the creators of Hextech, the new science that was a piece of ever tragedy. Both are creatures made by Hextech, unable to live without it. So like Victor and the creature, Jayce and Viktor realize they have no place left in the world. So they leave it, letting the world distort and contort their story as time passes by.

#unsatisfying conclusion I know but once again it is 1am I must simply work vomit#additional notes!#it was so hard keeping spelling correct for Viktor and Victor lest I ruin the ability to understand the word dump more#Jayce and Viktor and also like Victor bc they are queer and in love with their best friends#I was thinking about bringing up how both Viktor and Victor’s mental declines are also represented by physical health but#I need to directly reference the sources for that claim#the brain explosion moment I had when I realized while the story of Frankenstein ends with the two going to die in a blizzard#arcane (jayve and viktor specifically) begins in a blizzard#ok tagging things now additional thoughts OVER#arcane viktor#arcane jayce#arcane#arcane season2#viktor arcane#frankenstein#victor frankenstein#victor arcane#writing#ONE LAST THOUGHT ACTUALLY#I think the Viktor part of this applies to both Arcane Viktor and the Herald of the Arcane#and the Machine Herald he originally was in league#for season 1 at least#also shhhhh about the images not fully applying I’m looking for things in my camera roll#writings and rambles

sometimes when it's late and i can't sleep, i try to think of like... "becoming Sam," I guess. i don't mean that like I'm becoming someone else. more like, embracing potential.
it's like... familiar and alien at once. like when you move to a new apartment and come "home" for the first time since moving your stuff in. Aspects of the familiar (your furniture, your pictures, precious belongings) in a new, unfamiliar place.
some nights ( 🎵 I STAY UP CASHIN IN MY BAD LUCK 🎵), i look at the familiar and wonder what to take with me to the new place (no one's escaping the puns). some nights (🎵 I CALL IT A DRAW 🎵) I look at the unfamiliar and have hope for what it can become.
it's not a blank canvas, nor should it be. There are splotches and mistakes (aka "happy little accidents") to learn from, but they can be made into something new - artwork on the walls. I can hold onto the things I've learned, the change I've made, the growth I've managed.
At the same time, I can also use "becoming Sam" as a vehicle for change. i can think of qualities I aspire to have or make better, or i can look at something that i may consider a personality defect and go, "How would Sam deal with this?" and begin to grow in that direction, with grace for myself because it certainly doesn't happen overnight, lol.
Idk. like coming home to a new apartment, it's both strange and hopeful. and I'm sure I'll run into the walls at night and stub my toes, but that's part of learning.
and I'm rambling and it's 1am so I'm gonna try to sleep again.
may the morning be merciful, lol.

I went on an adventure today to return a pillow to IKEA with my coworker @astrid696.
We were having a nice day and got stuck in traffic coming home. On the way her phone rang and she was driving so she declined the call with a sigh. “I feel so bad for him,” she said.
“You know that number?”
She did. It turns out her phone number had previously belonged to a woman named Serena. The man calling was her dad. He had Alzheimer’s and didn’t remember his daughter was dead, so he just called the number he knew was hers.
I was stricken to hear this. “Do you talk to him?”
“Yeah. Sometimes he thinks I’m her and we talk. I have a notebook with facts I’ve learned about her so I can connect with him better. Sometimes he knows I’m not her and I say I’m her friend.”
I struggled with the beauty and humanity of this for a moment. “What’s his name?”
“I don’t know; I just call him Dad.”
We sat in silence and I was overwhelmed with feelings. That she was so kind and thoughtful about this random connection. A man who called and spoke to her with love for the daughter he missed.
"One time," she added, "he called me just after I had a difficult day with my mom. I knew Serena and her mom had a rocky relationship so I talked to him about my frustrations with my own mother and he gave the following advice: ‘Everyone fails sometimes, even parents; what's important is to communicate with our loved ones, even when it's difficult.’
“I have never forgotten that advice and it healed a portion of my heart."

I'd truly be the worst person to stick into a timeloop because I'd really just spend the first 5 years catching up on my book tbr, the next 7 on all the movies and shows that've Been On My List for ages, and then another decade on ao3. like sure nothing may stick but my memories will and i can just go into a supermarket to get snacks and wine each day, and i have art to indulge in. like thanks for the hints on how to get out but respectfully, I am busy

I think people misunderstand "x fell first, y fell harder " trope because it's not about like the one who fell harder loves the other person harder. It's just that the one who fell first falls in a graceful way, one step at the time, maybe gradually over a span of time. The one who fell harder smashes trough the air, there's blood everywhere, everything is fine-

Has anyone else been thinking about how in season 2, specifically act 2, Viktor’s mole under his eye was gone. Like it was there act 1, but the more he fused with the hexcore he became less emotive and a mole, an “imperfection” was removed. And how his “astral form” or whatever it’s called still has it. Has anyone else been thinking on this. Please.

Okay, another little lesson for fic writers since I see it come up sometimes in fics: wine in restaurants.
When you buy a bottle of wine in a (nicer) restaurant, generally (please note my emphasis there, this is a generalization for most restaurants, but not all restaurants, especially non-US ones) you may see a waiter do a few things when they bring you the bottle.
The waiter presents the bottle to the person who ordered it
The waiter uncorks the bottle in order to serve it
The waiter hands the cork to the person who ordered the bottle
The waiter pours a small portion of the wine (barely a splash) and waits for the person who ordered it to taste it
The waiter then pours glasses for everyone else at the table, and then returns to fill up the initial taster's glass
Now, you might be thinking -- that's all pretty obvious, right? They're bringing you what you ordered, making sure you liked it, and then pouring it for the group. Wrong. It's actually a little bit more complicated than that.
The waiter presents the bottle to the person who ordered it so that they can inspect the label and vintage and make sure it's the bottle they actually ordered off the menu
The waiter uncorks the bottle so that the table can see it was unopened before this moment (i.e., not another wine they poured into an empty bottle) and well-sealed
The waiter hands the cork to the person who ordered the bottle so that they can inspect the label on the cork and determine if it matches up; they can also smell/feel the cork to see if there is any dergradation or mold that might impact the wine itself
The waiter pours a small portion for the person who ordered to taste NOT to see if they liked it -- that's a common misconception. Yes, sometimes when house wine is served by the glass, waiters will pour a portion for people to taste and agree to. But when you order a bottle, the taste isn't for approval -- you've already bought the bottle at this point! You don't get to refuse it if you don't like it. Rather, the tasting is to determine if the wine is "corked", a term that refers to when a wine is contaminated by TCA, a chemical compound that causes a specific taste/flavor. TCA can be caused by mold in corks, and is one of the only reasons you can (generally) refuse a bottle of wine you have already purchased. Most people can taste or smell TCA if they are trained for it; other people might drink the wine for a few minutes before noticing a damp, basement-like smell on the aftertaste. Once you've tasted it, you'll remember it. That first sip is your opportunity to take one for the table and save them from a possibly corked bottle of wine, which is absolutely no fun.
If you've sipped the wine (I generally smell it, I've found it's easier to smell than taste) and determined that it is safe, you then nod to your waiter. The waiter will then pour glasses for everyone else at the table. If the wine is corked, you would refuse the bottle and ask the waiter for a new bottle. If there is no new bottle, you'll either get a refund or they'll ask you to choose another option on their wine list. A good restaurant will understand that corked bottles happen randomly, and will leap at the opportunity to replace it; a bad restaurant or a restaurant with poor training will sometimes try to argue with you about whether or not it's corked. Again, it can be a subtle, subjective taste, so proceed carefully.
In restaurants, this process can happen very quickly! It's elegant and practiced. The waiter will generally uncork the bottle without setting the bottle down or bracing it against themselves. They will remove the cork without breaking it, and they will pour the wine without dripping it down the label or on the table.
#sorry idk why I'm rambling about this today#it just stuck out to me in a fic yesterday#this is a generalization but#USUALLY the tasting isn't for approval of flavor#and I wanted to make sure more people knew that#SOMETIMES it is though so I don't want to disregard that#tw alcohol#wine#wine tasting#fic writing#fic background#writing tips#writing guide#fanfiction#fanfic

hello my loves <3 do not ever, ever, ever "officially" create for an IP that you have not signed a vetted contract to be paid for. this is a tactic companies use to get a free writer's room they don't have to pay for. you won't see a cent and they will own your work. don't do it.
