Sunday mass had ended and outside the sun shone but provided no warmth. Winter was starting to show. Just this morning there had been frost on the grass before the sun rose.

Outside Laura studiously avoided looking at Alfred and his ilk, just like she had ever since The Event weeks ago. Even with her uncle and Charles Elias by her side she felt vaguely anxious and jittery. She slunk a little closer to Charles Elias, listening to him and Isak talk.

She said nothing. She’d always avoided talking to him in public, worried he’d be disliked by others if he was too closely associated with her. Then again... It was too late now, wasn’t it? He was too close now, and he had chosen her.

He had chosen her. Why she may never know but he had. Had stood up for her. Protected her. If her silence had been a bid to keep him safe then that ship had sailed.

Bracing herself Laura slowly approached Charles Elias and decided to speak.

“I thought today’s sermon was a little disjointed if I’m honest,” she said.

Charles Elias froze, briefly looking at her in surprise and Laura nearly began to panic. Oh no. No, no. What if she’d ruined the mood? What if he –

Then Charles Elias broke out into a smile.

“I completely agree,” he said, hurrying a little to walk next to her.

“Right?” she said, “I think he tried to cover too many subjects at once. It was war but also winter but also married life and Christmas all in one go. I think it would have been better with a more limited scope, perhaps."

“Exactly!” Charles Elias said. “Like war and Christmas.” “Or married life and Christmas.” “Or married Christmas,” Charles Elias grinned.

Laura couldn’t help the short snort of laughter she let out. She covered her mouth, but the delighted look on Charles Elias’ face told her it was already too late.

“What was that?” he said, “Is that how you laugh?” “No!” “No, you didn’t laugh?” Laura couldn’t help smiling, “No.”

“Oh, my bad. It must’ve been a wild goose hiding in the brush somewhere.” Laura snort-laughed again and tried to cover her mouth. “I do not sound like a goose!” “Uh-huh."

“Well, if I sound like a goose then you sound like a- like a-“ “A duck? Eider? Or some other mammal? Moo?”

Laura couldn’t help but laugh once more. It felt so ridiculous and a little embarrassing, but there was a tingly joy that she was unable to keep in check. People must think she’s crazy. But a quick scan of the road showed that the only person nearby was her uncle who just gave her a quick, warm smile. “Careful talking about cows in public, mister cow-thief.”

She worried briefly that she was taking the teasing too far, but Charles Elias merely smiled. “Very well, anything for you, Miss Goose.” “Pfft,” Laura shook her head, “If you get to call me a goose, I’m gonna call you... um... Elias. No Charles for you.”

“It’s a deal, Miss Goose.” “So it is, Elias.”

"Are you alright?" Charles Elias turned, looking over Laura. She looked a little pale and shaky, but otherwise unharmed.

She blinked at him.

"… Yes," she said slowly, "Yes. I… They only said unkind things, that's all. I… I thought…"

She hugged him, hard. Squeezing.

"I thought I was all alone. That they would… That I would have to run or lock myself in somewhere or… God."

She sniffled against his shoulder.

"I was so scared."

Charles Elias hugged her back.

"I'm so sorry," he said, "I can't believe they… It… They're awful. Awful. I'm sorry."

Laura pulled back a little, drying her tears.

"I'm okay," she said, "I'm safe now."

"You are," he said, "You are."

Laura was quiet for a bit.

"Maybe I'll ask to come with you and uncle when you leave the house for a bit."

Charles Elias nodded. "That sounds wise."

They stood there for a moment longer, a bit too close to be proper. Charles Elias could feel the heat of her body through his shirt.

Then Laura took a step back.

"You're an idiot, by the way," she said, giving him a playful shove.

"What? Why?"

"Putting yourself in front of armed soldiers like that? For me of all things. It was very foolish."

Charles Elias shrugged.

"I've done more foolish things," he said, "Remember the cow?"

Historical Info

The Ehrenmalmian battalion that had been appointed to be a safety measure quickly turned out to become a problem for the people on Åland.

There were many tales from Ålanders about soldiers from the battalion behaving poorly, acting out or just generally being menaces. There was never any actual physical harm caused, but surely a lot of tension and stress.

In Det Åländska Folkets Historia Vol. III (The History of the Åland People Vol. III) it is stated that "according to ålander oral tradition Ehrenmalmians behaved in a tyrannical manner to their subservients" In 1796 a parish meeting in Finström decreed that 'a hard and harrowing treatment' hade occured in the Ehrenmalmian battalion." Worst of all was perhaps Johan Georg Ehrenmalm himself, who supposedly treated his own soldiers quite terribly as well, to the degree that in 1789 "a letter of complaint was issued to His Royal Majesty which was signed by twenty or so of soldiers from the battalion". That is what inspired this part of the story. Do I think that if Charles Elias hadn't intervened something truly terrible would have happened? No. I think Alfred was going for a more psychological warfare type of tactic. The implicit power in being able to threaten and frighten someone he knows can't defend themselves would most likely be his end goal. Then again, men on a power trip aren't exactly known to be safe or the kind of people not to act out on an impulse, but given that it's my story I say nothing would have happened UwU (did I base this entire bit on an experience from my early teens and name Alfred after one of the people involved? mayhaps xD)

TW: Verbal harassment

Charles Elias had finished his tasks early, and was perfectly happy to laze his afternoon away in bed with a purring cat.

The sudden raised voice directly outside his cabin startled both him and Brons.

"Stay back!"

Stumbling up he hurried to the door. Mind running.

The voice sounded like Laura, had to be her. Were they being invaded?

Attacked? Or was there a wild animal? Some kind of predator?

"I said stay back!"

Flinging the door open Charles Elias hurried out and froze.

There were his friends, all gathered together, and standing a short distance away, furious, was Laura.

Charles Elias looked between the two in utter confusion.

"What…?"

"Oh, Charles Elias!" Alfred smiled wide. "Good to see you! We thought you were out."

"…No? I came home early."

"Great, then you can help us out."

"Help you?"

Charles Elias looked to Laura and back to Alfred. "With what?"

"Oh, we just wanted to talk to dear old Laura," Alfred reached out for her and she scrambled back, baring her teeth.

"Wait," Charles Elias said.

Alfred didn't seem to hear.

"Come on, now, don't be like that," he said to Laura, "You should be flattered."

Laura scowled and Alfred sighed theatrically.

"You know, usually, people thank others for compliments, right boys?"

The others laughed.

"Alfred," Charles Elias warned.

"It's not like anyone else will ever say it. So come on, say 'thank you Alfred'."

Every word out of Alfred's mouth dripped with insincerity, and he kept trying to inch closer.

"Come on, Laura, at least shake my hand," Alfred reached out and Laura took another step back.

Charles Elias snapped.

"Enough!" He dashed down, putting himself between Laura and Alfred.

"She clearly doesn't want to."

Alfred took a step back, eyeing Charles Elias up and down.

"Well, now, buddy," he said, "I never thought you'd be the shining knight type of gentleman. What, do you think she'll kiss you if you pity her enough? Or are you hoping to get the house when the old man goes?"

"Stop it!"

Charles Elias felt so angry he could cry. How dare they? How dare he? How could he ever have been friends with them?

"You're really gonna pick her instead of your friends?"

"We're not friends," Charles Elias hissed.

"Oh," Alfred reared back a little. "Well then, I can see we're not welcome here.

Charles Elias let out a slow sigh as Alfred turned and began o lead his little troop away when Alfred turned to look back.

"Just remember, Charles Elias," he said, "You chose her instead of the King's own men."

Before I get started on today's lookbook I have to give a huge shout out to @anachrosims for graciously making a separated top version of her newest British Royal Navy uniform, without which finalising some of these ensembles would have been a real struggle and a half.

While women's fashions of the early 19th century looked toward classical Greek and Roman antiquity for style inspiration, there was a growing Anglomania among fashionable men, who turned to the tailors of Britain for a new, refined look. The restrained riding costumes worn by English gentlemen on their country estates started to permeate into everyday clothing. Outfits were mostly un-ornamented and colours subdued, with court dress being the only exception to this turn away from ostentatious excess. Instead, luxury was outwardly expressed through the perfect fit of each element of a man’s wardrobe.

The Napoleonic Wars had a great influence on menswear, as military uniforms became some of the most lavish and elaborate in history. Braid, frogging, Brandenburg buttons, and tassels found their way into civilian men’s and womenswear for years and the prevailing fashion for pantaloons tucked into boots was, at least in part, inspired by the military.

While pantaloons and breeches were the dominate style of bottoms for men, trousers started to creep their way into male fashion, albeit only in the most informal of occasions. Initially worn by boys and sailors, they became a more relaxed option for men to don during leisurely past times such as seaside promenading. CC links under the cut.

(TS4CC) HALL OF ADMIRALS: 1812 BRITISH ROYAL NAVY UNIFORM SET

HELLO! I am so, so proud of finally being able to realize this project, so let's get down to it.

A fascinating part of the English Regency era was achieving social glory and fame and financial gain through victorious capture of ships during battle; as well as the reality of the exploits, and atrocities committed by the British Empire in the name of colonialism and profit.

These uniforms--three mesh variants--can encompass the uniforms of the ranks of mate, midshipman, lieutenant, and captain. I was actually going to add embroidery, but last week at work kicked my butt, and I didn't want to delay this any further.

All the items are separate, and the non-epaulette top could easily be used as a regular outfit for any Regency gentleman; as could the breeches, stockings, and shoes.

I've also included labeled PSD files so you can recolor to your heart's desire.

The nineteenth century opened with a fashion landscape that was changing dramatically and rapidly from the styles of a generation earlier. Gone were the overly fussy coifs of the 1700s and in their place came a soft simplicity inspired by the classical antiquity of the Greeks and Romans. The wide silhouette of the early century started to slim come the mid century, and it slimmed even more so come the 1770s. Style in general was becoming more simplified, leading to fashion that exemplified the new 'casual' aesthetic. The habit à la française came into mode for men, showcasing the standing collar that would carry over into the early 1800s. The front skirt of the coat started being cut back, exposing the front of the breeches. This resulted in waistcoats becoming shorter and breeches becoming tighter to exaggerate the new silhouette. In direct contrast to this move toward simplicity, dandies outfitted themselves in eye-catching and visually lavish ensembles. Their style loudly announced their cosmopolitan, fashion-centric outlook, and their sartorial choices blurred the line between masculine and feminine.

We've now finally hit the point in the historical timeline where I can represent my home country! While the early white settlement of Australia is typically associated with the convicts that were shipped to penal colonies in the newly discovered country, by the late 1700s free settlers were also making it home. Many of these settlers built homesteads and farmed the land for survival. It was a tough life and their practical clothing reflected as such.

The end of the 18th century saw a great deal of political unrest, most notably in France. The French Revolution had a huge impact on clothing as it became increasingly important to outwardly show your republican support via your stylistic choices. Waistcoats were still very much a part of a man's everyday wardrobe, and often times they were decorated to show political sympathies. The 1790s saw the rise of the sans-culottes - working class men who shunned the wearing of breeches in favour of loose trousers. These were often paired with a red wool cap known as a bonnet phrygian, which signified the wearer's hardcore dedication to the revolution.

Small News

Hi lovely readers!! Just figured I'd pop in with a quick lil update. Which is that due to an issue with my eyes I am having a hard time editing pictures for my story atm so even though I have posts in wait I can't finish them right now. Terribly annoying but ah well, what can you do?

I'm waiting to see a doctor about it (ETA unknown) and I'm assuming I'll probably get some special glasses or something and then be able to get back into the swing of things. But until then there'll be a bit of a drought. No worries though, I'm still hanging around until dr time and then I'll be back ^w^ Much love and have a lovely spring!

It consisted of 400 men divided into four companies - and some familiar faces.

Charles Elias hadn't spent much time with his old friends since Theodore left. He claimed he was simply too busy, but part of him also worried he'd end up disappointing Theodore upon his return if he got himself in trouble again.

So he steered clear. He would still see them around the village, mostly gambling and flirting with girls, and he'd say hi, exchange some pleasantries and then be on his way.

Everything felt mostly okay. Calm.

Until one afternoon.

Dear family,

I am writing to let you know that I am well.

I am currently in southeastern Finland, on the move from one fortress to another. It is a welcome change from my previous stay at Karlskrona aiding the wounded and sick there.

Military life at wartime is filled with a lot of dull moments, marching and camping. When we are not on the move or resting my time is taken up by work. 

There's always someone in need of aid. I'm loathe to admit some of the excitement of deployment has faded, and now I sorely miss my old bed and attic in Stockholm.

Still, I shan't complain. I'm happy with my work and in good health, and that is what matters the most.

This next part I am writing for your eyes only, Charles Elias. It will not be included in the letter sent to our mother, and I do not want her to ever see or hear of it.

She would worry herself into an early grave if she did. Especially now as the war is still ongoing.

I am drained, Charles Elias. For the sake of efficency I am not only tasked with field surgery, but also with assisting the ill.

It's a nightmare. For each soldier whose life I save, I lose two more to sickness.

Typhus recurrens and dysentery ravage my men, and there's so little I can do.

Even the soldiers who are merely wounded fall ill. Once repaired wounds and limbs rot and kill.

It solidifies my decision to be a barber surgeon rather than a doctor. I do not know how medicine men find joy in such thankless work as this.

Give me a gunshot wound or a broken limb to treat any day. At least I have the power to do something about those.

I can't wait for this war to end so that I may go back to doing what I know and love.

I miss Stockholm, with its bars and lively people. I miss you and our family. I even miss Åland.

Maybe I'll attempt a visit after the war ends.

This next part I am writing for your eyes only, Charles Elias. It will not be included in the letter sent to our mother, and I do not want her to ever see or hear of it.

She would worry herself into an early grave if she did. Especially now as the war is still ongoing.

I am drained, Charles Elias. For the sake of efficency I am not only tasked with field surgery, but also with assisting the ill.

It's a nightmare. For each soldier whose life I save, I lose two more to sickness.

Typhus recurrens and dysentery ravage my men, and there's so little I can do.

Even the soldiers who are merely wounded fall ill. Once repaired wounds and limbs rot and kill.

It solidifies my decision to be a barber surgeon rather than a doctor. I do not know how medicine men find joy in such thankless work as this.

Give me a gunshot wound or a broken limb to treat any day. At least I have the power to do something about those.

I can't wait for this war to end so that I may go back to doing what I know and love.

I miss Stockholm, with its bars and lively people. I miss you and our family. I even miss Åland.

Maybe I'll attempt a visit after the war ends.

Hedgehog Hair Set: Feathers Add-ons

Here are some feathered add-ons for my Hedgehog Hair Set (found here).

I’ve made a cap with 2 feather variations and a feathered hair piece. Each item has a version to work with my Georgiana hair from the set, my Elliot V1 and V2 hairs, and a hatslider version to work with all hairstyles so there are 9 packages in total.

The Worsley Feathers come in the 25 colours of @simulatedstyles's palette to match his dresses from that era, and an additional black and white swatch with silver and gold variations of the hair pin.

The Hannah Cap comes in the same @simulatedstyles palette with the feathers in white and the same colour as the cap. The hatslider version is smaller than the Hedgehog Hair versions because those hairstyles are far wider than most which made the cap look oversized on everything else so I sized it down so it fitted with more hairs. It’s accidently the perfect size to fit in hairstyles that use the Tiny Living braid like my Duna hairstyle which I used for the thumbnail!

I don’t actually know if ‘cap’ is the right term for it because I’ve made it based off of portraits of the era and my research never mentioned if they had a specific name so if anyone would like to correct me then it’d be very welcome!
