Counting Sheep

An Immersive Guerrilla Folk Opera
November 28th - December 17th, 2017 At 3LD Art and Technology Center - Studio A
80 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10006
After taking the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe and then the world by storm, COUNTING SHEEP, the groundbreaking and award-winning immersive guerrilla folk-opera, has its New York premiere November 28th - December 17th at 3LD. Sung entirely in breathtaking traditional Ukrainian polyphony and enhanced by first-hand video footage from the streets of Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine during the protests, Counting Sheep invites audience members to participate fully in this electrifying performance. Patrons are encouraged to dance, sing, eat, hurl foam bricks, dodge men with guns, witness violence, and join in the rituals of public mourning as part of a dramatized experience of the 2014 Maidan Revolution in Ukraine. The protests in Kyiv were fueled by disenchantment with the political system, and led to the deaths of over 780 people and the displacement of more than one million others. Mark and Marichka Marczyk, the creators of Counting Sheep, were in the streets during the uprising, and they re-create their experience as part of the performance, addressing themes of national pride and human rights, and navigating the tipping point between street party and revolt.
"All patrons participate in the immersive experience of the show. Seating is general admission within each section."

Announcing our season for 2017/18!
This year, we're returning to our roots with two enormous, genre-defying, mind-bending technical smorgasbords by the 3LD team. Along with the world premieres of Esperpento and Intimate Moment in 2018, we've also got exciting new collaborations, residencies, workshops, global connections, and so much more!
View the complete season HERE.
A message from Kevin Cunningham
Since 1994, 3LD has been an artist-run organization, providing a home for talent from across the international experimental arts and technological community. After last year’s award-winning season including the sold-out 3/Fifths, a Drama Desk Nomination for Paper Hat Game and a Pulitzer Prize for Angel's Bone, I’m excited to be returning to our roots in 2017/18.
3-Legged Dog started at the Ontological Theater as part of the Incubator Series curated by Sophie Haviland. We created 3-Legged Dog to try to find a way to produce ambitious experimental works in performance and media in New York City, and to create affordable, flexible technological solutions  in a world of declining support for the arts.
This season we are returning to that primary creative mode. The cornerstone of this season is the development of two large-scale, artistically and technologically virtuosic works, which will premiere in the Fall of 2018.
Working in collaboration with award winning playwright Chuck Mee, we will finally create Intimate Moment, an ambitious large-scale performance/installation, which was thrown off track by the recession.
Intimate Moment will explore race, gender, language and culture through multipath narrative and dynamic mapping techniques. allowing audience members and performers to shift fundamental identity markers.
Using a mix of 3D holographic and dynamic video techniques we will profoundly blur the borders between media and reality, making it difficult for people to tell where reality stops and illusion starts.
Following his dazzling Skiff/Faustrol, we’re excited to present the world premiere of Esperpento by 3LD associate artist Victor Moralez, a genre-defying performance about those who are not like US, using digital puppetry inspired by Francis Bacon’s figures, Goya’s Dark Paintings and the theatrical ideas of Ramón del Valle-Inclán.
This season, we’ll also be focusing on the incubation and development of groundbreaking new work. Following the overwhelming response to our 2017 production of 3/Fifths, an immersive spectacle that the New York Times called a “relentlessly provocative, intricately imagined satire,” 3LD Associate Artist James Scruggs will come back into residence at 3LD through January 2018, with the goal of reimagining 3-Fifths for a wider audience. The piece will be presented at 3LD during the annual APAP/ISPA showings here in New York.
I’m also thrilled to announce a series of new partnerships, both here in the US and abroad.
In Spring 2018, 3LD Art & Technology Center will present the Third-Year Repertory Season of The Actors Studio Drama School MFA Program at Pace University’s Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. This multi-year collaboration will provide a new venue for the innovative MFA training program, which was created to train a new generation of actors, directors, and playwrights in the tradition of the famous Actors Studio, founded in 1947 by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford, and Robert Lewis.
This year, we’ll also be extending our global connections. In October 2017, the 3LD team is partnering with the SHIFT Festival in Jiading, China to present the first ever SHIFT Hackathon. In November, we’ll be hosting the Window Collective for an intensive technical and design development workshop of Out the Window, a new play based on the police shooting of a mentally ill person in Toronto, in partnership with the Theatre Center in Ontario, Canada and the Luminato Festival.
Thank you for your continued support as we gear up for another year of challenging ambitious new work. We’ll see you at 3LD!
Kevin Cunningham - Artistic Director

FIT FOR A QUEEN (World Premiere)by Betty Shamieh directed by Tamilla Woodard
October 4 – 30, 2016 **New Location** at 3LD Art & Technology Center, 80 Greenwich Street, NYC 10006 (in lower Manhattan) Fit for a Queen is inspired by the life of Hatshepsut, the only woman who ruled as a pharaoh in ancient Egypt. The most dangerous opponent to Hatshepsut’s kingship turns out to be her own daughter. Full of intrigue, farce, and sexual politics, Fit for a Queen illuminates the largely unknown history of a compelling African woman who took power over the most advanced civilization the ancient world had yet known.Betty Shamieh (playwright) is the author of fifteen plays. In 2016, Betty Shamieh was named a Guggenheim Fellow for Drama and Performance Art. Her off-Broadway premieres are The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop, Director: Sam Gold), and Roar (The New Group, Director Marion McClinton). Roar is currently being taught at universities throughout the United States. Her European productions in translation include Again and Against (Playhouse Theater, Stockholm), The Black Eyed (Fournos Theatre, Athens), and Territories (co-production of the Landes Theatre and the 2009 European Union Capital of Culture Festival). Shamieh wrote and co-starred in her play of monologues, Chocolate in Heat (Director: Sam Gold), in two sold-out off-off-Broadway runs and over twenty university theatres.   The Machine (Director: Marisa Tomei) was produced by Naked Angels at the Duke Theatre in 2007. She was selected as the winner of The Playwrights’ Center’s 2012-2013 McKnight National Residency and Commission. A graduate of Harvard College and the Yale School of Drama, Shamieh was awarded an NEA grant to be a playwright-in-residence at the Magic Theatre. Shamieh was selected as a Clifton Visiting Artist at Harvard College and a Playwriting Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies. Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Studies presented the world premiere of a suite of arias from Territories, an opera based on her play.  She was recently commissioned by Denison College to co-write the lyrics and libretto for Malvolio, a sequel to Twelfth Night based on her original play. She is a two-time winner of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Shamieh was selected as a UNESCO Young Artist for Intercultural Dialogue in 2011.  Her works have been translated into seven languages. www.bettyshamieh.com Tamilla Woodard (director) is a theatre director working nationally and internationally. Currently, she is serving as the Artistic Director of The Five Boroughs/One City Project, a multi year initiative of The Working Theater. She is co-founder of PopUp Theatrics, a partnership creating site specific and immersive productions and collaborations around the world. She is a recent Time Warner Directing Fellow at the Women’s Project Theater, a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, alumnus of The Lincoln Center Directors Lab and former Audrey Fellow at New Georges. She graduated from The Yale School of Drama’s Acting program and is the recipient of The Josephine Abady Award from The League of Professional Theatre Women and The Charles Bowden Award from New Dramatists.
