Day 2 ~ Staring at the stars
Evan was restless. And Maddie was not having it, she wasn’t dealing with an angry eight year old who refused to go to bed, not after the long week she had. So she caved, piling layers upon layers on his small frame, and taking him to the block playground. Settling on a bench, Maddie let Evan run off, headed straight for the slides.
He knew how to take care of himself, and this block was locked anyway, so there was no worry of strangers wandering in and stealing him. Maddie allowed herself to close her eyes, leaning her head back until it rested against the cold metal of the bench. Just a second, she told herself. Her eyes would only be closed a little while, and Evan would wake her when he was done.
“You doing okay?”
It took a second for Maddie to wake up completely, tilting her head slightly to where the voice had come from. A man, slightly concerned, slightly bemused look on his face was seated beside her, god knows for how long.
“Yea, all good.”
Tired fingers scrabbled for her phone, squinting at the shock of white light to read the time. Good, she had only been out for 20 minutes.
“Uh, I’m Howard, um, Howie, well, everyone calls me Chimney.”
“Oh, um, Maddie.”
She stuck out a hand and he grasped it, shaking lightly, quickly replacing hands in pockets to keep away the chill for longer.
“Is he yours?”
Maddie’s mind did mental gymnastics to figure out what Howie was talking about.
“Oh, Evan? Younger brother, technically I adopted him so I’m his legal guardian.”
Howie nodded, pointing to the playground, where Maddie noticed the second kid, probably also around Evan’s age.
“Denny, uh, also not mine, I’m just babysitting so his parents could have a date night,” He scratched the back of his neck, eyes tracking the boys as they climbed across the frame. “Not sure if he’s supposed to be out this late, but if he doesn’t tell his parents, I’m golden.”
Maddie giggled, tilting her head back up to look at the sky. The stars were out in as much of their glory as they could be in LA, which wasn’t a lot, but it was more than usual.
“Sky looks nice today.”
Howie joined her in looking up, taking in the glow.
“Probably the most I’ve seen in a while.”
The pair sat in silence for a moment, before they realised that silence shouldn’t be what they were hearing, not with kids around, and especially not with the kids they were taking care of.
“Maddie! Look, look, I made a friend!”
“Uncle Chim, uncle Chim, this is, this is Evan!”
They knew, but they managed to convince their respective kid to calm down slightly, taking the opposite sides on the bench, Denny tucked up to Howie’s side, and Evan curled on Maddie’s lap, chatting excitedly about possible play dates. Maddie and Howie let them talk, instead keeping their eyes trained upwards, until the kids quietened down, resorting to watching the sky with them.
When the pairs parted, the kids parted with promises to see each other again, wild stories about adventures they would get up to, and the adults with each other’s numbers, promises of a bottle of champagne and a movie, maybe when the kids were with Denny’s parents.

Day 1 ~ First hug
"Buck I wanna meet them!"
Christopher was practically bouncing. Kinda what happens when a global lockdown comes into effect, 10 year old Chris had been deprived of meeting his unofficial younger cousin for too long, and now, Buck was paying the price for that.
"Uh, yea, Chris, they'll be here in a bit, and then you can meet Jee."
Chris screwed up his face with an exaggerated sigh.
"Buck it's been, like, like, an hour."
"You got here all of 15 minutes ago, but alright."
Eddie shot a bemused glace over to Buck, who was doing his very best to quell the requests of the very impatient boy. He could very easily stop this, but honestly, he was having a good time watching Christopher wear Buck down. So a few more minutes of torturing Buck wouldn't hurt.
"BucK-" Christopher began again, swiftly cut off by the doorbell.
"You hear that? They're here."
Buck rushed to the door, Chris as close to his heels as he could manage.
"Now remember, you have to be quiet."
Buck leaned down to Chris, pressing a finger to his lips in a shushing motion. Chris returned the gesture, Buck going practically cross-eyed as Chris' finger narrowly missed going up Buck's nose.
"Quiet," Chris nodded earnestly. "I've got it."
Buck opened the door, just a crack at first, then fully, revealing Maddie and Chimney, Chimney carrying a rather large grey bag, and Maddie cradling a pink bundle.
"Jeeeeeeeee!" Chris whisper-yelled, dancing around happily, but remembering to stay quiet.
It took all of Buck's willpower to not just coo over Jee the whole time, after all, this meeting had been set up for Chris, who had really wanted to meet Jee, and as it had been revealed to Buck at some point, he was determined to be the very best "cousin". But Chris seemed to have disappeared.
Buck found Christopher sitting patiently on the couch, having not said a word for the past 10 minutes.
"Hey Chris, what's up, why are you just sitting here?"
"I'm waiting my turn."
"What, what for buddy?"
"To hold Jee." Chris stated, very matter-of-factly, going back to sitting still.
It didn't take long for Christopher to be set, back resting against the back of the couch for stability, Eddie on one side and Maddie on the other, slowly transferring the bundle over to Chris, who cradled her carefully, arms held tight in the way he had been shown a few minutes prior. His face was set in concentration and awe, completely focused on her tiny features, her serene expression as she slept on.
"Hi Jee! I'm Christopher." He whispered, leaning as close as he dared. "And I'm going to be your friend! Okay?"
Over Chris's back, Maddie and Buck made eye contact, smiling as Chris rocked her slightly.
"And I'm going to keep you safe."

Waaaaaait one more. Drunk Maddie & Karen “I will now throw up, so I won’t die”
Neither of them had meant to end up drunk. It was just supposed to be the two of them having a nice, relaxing night out away from their partners and children with maybe a glass or two of wine.
Except Maddie had decided to "be bad" and order a margarita, and then that made Karen want one who then wanted another which made Maddie want one more then made...
"Hen's gonna be pissed," Karen snorts, belly shaking with a drunken cackle, "told her I'd put Denny to bed tonight. Don't think that's haaaappennnning."
"Glad I pumped breast milk before I left," Maddie giggles, "Jee-Yun's too young to drink and my boob milk is full of margarita."
"Boob milk," Karen repeats back, laughing before her face turns serious and thoughtful for a moment, "what's that like? Never had a kid suck on my boob."
"Oh, it hurts," Maddie says with a huff, "Jee-Yun is a biter. Must get that from her father."
"Wait... Chimney bites you during--"
"No!" she shouts, waving her hands as she laughs so hard she fully falls out of her chair, "he doesn't like the dentist and always ends up biting their finger. Not sexy biting, I'm not into that. Now help me up."
"Mmkay," Karen giggles, stumbling to clumsily help Maddie back up onto her feet, "let's go outside. Too hot and stuffy in this bar."
"Outside!" Maddie agrees enthusiastically, letting Karen tug her through the exists, both of them tripping and nearly falling several times until they collapse together onto a bench, "you know, you're really pretty. I'm not into ladies but I've always kind of wondered what that was like."
"Being a lesbian?" Karen asks, not quite following.
"Yeah. Because girls smell better than boys. I mean, not Chimney because he lets me pick out his cologne but most boys."
"Chimney does smell good," Karen nods seriously, "good job."
"Thank you! He smells really good and he looks really good and he's really cuddly and he likes belly rubs like a puppy... and," she whimpers, suddenly bursting into tears, "and I-I miss him. I wanna go home and see my puppy."
"Oh, don't cry. Puppy is at home waiting for you! And Hen is waiting for me! Hen! A sexy medical student. I'm so lucky, I'm like really really lucky and--"
"Can you call an Uber?" Maddie sobs, looking at a photo of Chimney on her phone, "I want my puppy."
"Okaaaaaaay," Karen singsongs, "but first now I will now throw up so I won't die."

Day 1 ~ May I have this dance?
Maddie felt unbelievably out of place, as one did if they knew nobody except their drunk brother, who was grinding it up on the dance floor. It was to be expected after all, she was only here because she didn't want to stay at his apartment, alone. She figured she wouldn't survive an hour alone, not so soon after...
Maddie shuddered, taking another sip of her wine, hoping it would wash down the memories. On the bright side, it looked like Evan was having fun, the first time she had seen him in years and it seemed like he had found his home, his place.
"May I have this dance?"
A short Asian man, shy smile upon his face offered a hand to Maddie, wracking her brain to try a put a name to his face, one of many that she had whipped past when she first arrived.
"I.. uh," Maddie stuttered, still doing her best to remember his name. Luckily he realized her struggle.
"It's Chimney- uh Howie, you can call me Howie."
He wiggled his fingers again, still offered towards her.
"So? May I?"
"Did Evan, uh, Buck, put you up to this?"
He chuckled, looking over his shoulder to the dance floor.
"You mean 'stumbling around on the dance floor' Buck? You think?" Howie shook his head. "How could I pass up a beautiful woman such as yourself sitting off to the side here?"
Maddie cocked her head to the right slightly. Something about this man intrigued her, from his playful attitude despite his shyness, and how he held himself, and it might be the wine talking but she couldn't help but find him at least a little attractive.
Besides, she could feel her troubling thoughts slipping away, and she was more and more tempted by that hand before her. Maybe she should let herself have some fun. Downing the rest of the wine in her glass, she grabbed his hand, letting him pull her to her feet.
"It's Maddie. And you better make it a good one."
"Mmm, I consider myself a pretty good dancer."
"Sure."

"Now, Ms Buckley and Mr Han, would you like to know the gender?"...
*the angst train cho cho mothertruckers*
"Are you feeling alright Mads?"
"Yea, everything's fine."
Maddie forced a smile, only the slight tremour in her fingers giving away her true feelings. She had been sent home early from the call centre yesterday after she had fainted, and abdominal pain had plagued the rest of her afternoon. Josh had urged her to tell Chimney, give him a heads up in case it was something more sinister, and she had promised to, but seeing his face light up with glee the moment she had welcomed him in, she couldn't bring herself to drop the bomb. Besides, they had an appointment tomorrow, and all her concerns would be quietened.
So that's where they were now, sitting in the waiting room, listening out for their names.
"Maddie Buckley and Howard Han?"
Chimney practically leap from his seat, offering a hand to Maddie, who took it, following slightly behind.
"You know the drill Ms Buckley."
The procedure was the same as it had been for the past 2 appointments, and soon the cool gel was spread across Maddie's abdomen, sonographer watching the screen as she moved the wand over her stomach. The smile slowly faded from the sonographer's face, Maddie's eyes desperately searching for any sign of recognition, but nothing.
"Is, is there something wrong with the baby doc, what's going on?"
Chimney's gaze flicked between Maddie, the sonographer and the screen, trying his best to identify the situation.
"No, Mr Han, there's nothing wrong with the baby, in fact, Ms Buckley, they seem to be in excellent health."
Maddie felt the panic leave her body, and relief swamped her, squeezing Chimney's hand as he watched on in confusion.
"They?"
The sonographer nodded, and it clicked. They. She hadn't been referring to Maddie and the baby, she had meant...
"Yes, they. Twins, in fact, both in wonderful health, growing normally and well on their way to be perfect little newborns."
The pure bliss on Chimney's face was hard to miss, tearing up slightly at the news.
"Twins?" His voice peaked slightly as he swallowed back his tears of joy. "We're having twins!"
"Now, Ms Buckley and Mr Han, would you like to know the gender?"
*I'm just kidding baby plot armour is too strong*

Hello. It is I. Requesting a part 2. What the hell does Maddie say to that? 🥺😭
Part 1
*HAPPY BIRTHDAY @maddieandchimney! and now i know it's been a while since this fic, but i was sorting through drafts, so it's time.*
Not nearly as cute as you. :)
Maddie would have squealed if she was any younger, and any less tired, after shift work and a baby who just wouldn't stop moving, but now, sharing the space with her baby was a rush of butterflies. She didn't know if she should feel ashamed of herself. She was still, technically married, no matter how abusive, and how far away across the country she was hiding.
But Chimney made her feel something, a spark she hadn't felt in years, a warmth of safety that she had been ripped away from the moment she was tangled in Doug's web. Maddie felt free for the first time in years, speaking her mind around him, without fearing the consequences.
Her hands still hovered above the keyboard, waiting for her brain to catch up to her heart, to process everything she could feel into a comprehensible sentence. Of course Chimney used emoticons, Maddie thought was a fond smile, but the more she thought, the more she wished she didn't. Maybe he didn't mean it like that. Maybe Chimney had made a nice comment as a friend, to quell her many concerns about her appearance, maybe none of this mattered and maybe now she was thinking about things too much.
Another grey message bubble popped up from Chimney, and it occurred to her that she had just been staring at her phone, daydreaming, worrying, for 5 minutes, more than enough time for Chimney to begin reconsidering his message, and overthinking more than she was.
Sorry, didn't mean to overstep
It would be perfectly alright, more than perfectly alright for Maddie to reciprocate, right? Everything would end up just fine if she gave in to her feelings just this once, if she fed this feeling of absolute bliss and see where it took her, them. He gave her the care and love that she had been deprived of for so long, and letting herself fall, just this once, wouldn't hurt. Would it?
Not at all, personally, I think you're cuter ;)

Maddie
*im working on it okay, let me sort my life out*
“Maddie?”
The girl turns, and Buck feels a weird sense of déjà vu, a younger splitting image of his sister. She smiles at him, confused.
“That’s not my name, but I can take a message for her.”

[name], there’s nobody there.
*not gonna say I’m back but hi*
“Mumma, daddy? There’s a monster in my closet.”
Chimney glanced at Maddie, who shot him a look, prompting him to get out of bed, taking Jee-Yun’s little hand in his. She was 5, just barely old enough to be in her own room, and she had been doing it like a champ, but every now and then, these nights, where the soft pattering feet would carry her as fast as they could over to her parent’s room.
“Let’s see where that mean monster is, okay? See if we can scare him out so you can go to sleep.”
Jee-Yun nodded anxiously, skipping slightly at double time to keep up with Chimney’s (by comparison) longer legs. He carefully pushed open the bedroom door, trying to not trip over Jee, who had practically attached herself to the back of his legs, peering out into the darkened room. Stars dotted the ceiling, glowing faintly in a off yellow-green, but Chimney elected to pick up the flashlight resting at the foot of the bed. He gently pried Jee off the back of his legs, tucking her tightly into bed before creeping further forwards and opening the closet, flailing the flashlight around in a massive show.
“Where are you foul beast! Get out so that I may slay you, and so you may never bother the fair Jee-Yun ever again!”
Chimney struck a wild pose, pausing to hear Jee giggle at his antics, before shutting the door with a smile. He returned the flashlight to its original place, where he was sure it would be used over and over again, in the future, crouching down to be eye-level with Jee.
“Jee-Yun, there’s nobody there. “
He took her hands in his, kissing them both, and then leaning in to kiss her forehead, a gesture at which she wrinkled her nose.
“But daddy I swear!”
“I would have slayed it for you.” Chimney reminded, playful smile on his face.
“Can I sleep with you and mumma tonight?”
Chimney thought about it. Not for very long, because who wouldn’t cave to those puppy dog eyes? What could he say, he was a sucker for his girls.
“Okay.”
“Yay!”
She raised her hand, making a grabbing motion, and as much as Chimney rolled his eyes, he picked her up, sitting her comfortably at his waist. He wasn’t looking forwards to the day when she would stop asking to be carried. He made his way back to his bedroom.
“Maddie...” he sung quietly, hoping to not stun her too much.
“Mumma!” Jee-Yun cheered, completely missing the memo.
Chimney set her down and Jee was quick to scramble to the middle, finding the place where she had already spent many nights, Chimney falling into place beside them, wrapping his arms around them as best he could.
He would enjoy this, snuggled up and happy, in their little family of three. He really didn’t want Jee-Yun to grow up, at least, not just yet.

“I’ll feel much better if you let me walk you home.”
*look i may or may not have been off watching the DreamSMP, and this may or may not be made in my slight minecraft obsession, but shhh. Cute*
Maddie took a peek down the stairs, watching her parents leave the house, holding her breath until they were fully gone, car lights disappearing down the street. When she finally sure there were gone, gone for now, she turned back to her room, sliding down the hall in her fluffy socks, closing the door quietly and logging on to Minecraft. She didn’t know how she had hidden this from her parents for so long, but initially it had been a bright eyed boy, slightly older than her in her class who asked if she had an account, and immediately intrigued, she had answered yes, and completely made up a username. He grinned back at her and invited her to play with him that night.
That night, she looked up the easiest online guide for downloading minecraft, and created an account under the name she had told the boy. Over the next few weeks, Minecraft had become her escape. She spent days hidden away in her room, figuring out the mechanics of the game, and most importantly, spending time with that boy. They would spend hours together in this virtual world, farming and building, taming animals and exploring. Maddie could turn away from her reality and into Minecraft, and play with the boy with a gamer tag of ‘Chimney’.
The one thing she absolutely hated within the game were the monsters. her first encounter with a creeper had left her dead, items scattered across the house she had been building, and a big crater where she had stood. The next night, Chimney handed her a sword and shield and taught her how to use them. She could handle a zombie, she could tolerate the skeletons, but the creepers terrified her.
“Diamonds are the best resource in this game.” Chimney had typed into the in game chat during her first day on the server. “So here.”
He passed her a diamond, named my precious <3. Which is of course the reason the diamond sat in an item frame, displayed proudly on her wall.
But remembering what he said, she recently had spent a lot of time searching for the shiny blue gems. So when Chimney logged on, thats where he found her, carefully placing blocks over a lava pit to reach an ore on the opposite wall.
Hello!
Hi <3
Maddie smiled at her screen, manoeuvring her character to look at Chimney’ s.
Call?
Okay
Plugging in her headphones, she waited for the familiar crackle followed by the voice she had learnt to associate with happiness.
“Hello, hello!”
“How are you?”
They dissolved easily into conversation, working side by side in the dark caves, searching for the valuables. It was almost enough to make her forget about the fact that her parents would be home soon. It was the alarm that reminded her, and as much as she hated it, she was glad for the foresight.
“I have to go.”
“I’ll feel much better if you let me walk you home.”
“Sorry?”
Maddie could practically hear the awkward smile on his face over the phone.
“You don’t like the creepers, and i wont be able to be your knight in shining armour all the time.” His voice softened. “Please?”
“Alright. But quickly.”
The two climbed out of their hole in the ground, making a break for the two simple wooden houses while Chimney took body shots and Maddie ran, giggling at his dramatic commentary.
“No! You will not take me or my fair maiden!” Chimney’s character charged at the nearby creepers, who barely had time to hiss before they were gone in a puff of experience, leaving nothing behind but a few pieces of gunpowder. “Die and never bother us again!”
“Chim, I made it, you can stop.”
She peered out of her windows, watching his character sprint past, quickly slamming the door behind him. Chimney blew a raspberry at the zombies who had followed him, now standing on his doorstep.
“Too slow!” He taunted, before shuffling over to the window where he could see Maddie.
His character punched the air, as if waving goodbye, and she returned the gesture, logging off the game, but not hanging up quite yet.
“Thanks for playing with me.”
“Anytime.”
If Minecraft had to be her escape, for now it would be, and she would forever be glad for the boy who showed her this whole new world.

“This looks cute.” “Not nearly as cute as you.”
Not nearly as cute as you.
Chimney caught himself just before his finger hit send, reading over the text conversation. A simple conversation with Maddie, Buck’s sister, who had arrived in LA on the run from her abusive husband, heavily pregnant, scared and alone. What in had been in him that volunteered himself to help her, he would never know, but it pooled deep within him, gathering feelings of, regret? No, he would never regret lending a hand, no, it was more like restraint. Not wanting to overstep, yet there were feelings for her that grew faster and faster everyday, and more and more every time he saw her.
Highlighting the text, we swiped over to the notes app, pasting the text in, along with a date. The ever growing notes page, filled with the texts he had almost sent, the texts that he wouldn’t send without her permission.
Part of him felt bad for thinking this way. She had just escaped an abusive relationship, she was pregnant, stressed with planning for her child, with getting a place to live, with her job. That was the part that made him copy and paste his unallowed texts, no matter what they were, from the borderline to the downright obvious, the part that made him catch himself and reread everything before he sent it. But the majority of him wanted so badly to hold her, to compliment her for all she was, beautiful, caring, funny, spill his heart out and tell her how he felt about him.
It was never meant to be, he had to remind himself.
Not nearly as cute as you.
He found himself slowly typing the words out again, rereading her previous text.
This looks cute.
In reference to a soft looking lion plushie, one of the many things she would spend weeks deciding over, before ultimately ordering it online. One of the things she did a lot. She wanted to give her baby the world. It was another thing he had grown to love about her.
Maybe, just maybe, one slip up wouldn’t hurt. Maybe this message could unlock something fresh, something new. Something she wouldn’t object to either. It was worth a shot, right? It wasn’t too much, a compliment potentially exchanged between friends. It wasn’t too out of question. Right? His thumb hovered over the backspace key. he added a smiley face for good measure. Squeezing his eyes shut, he let his thumb migrate up the phone, hitting send.
Opening his eyes again, he stared at the text, now in a blue bubble, delivered written in small letters right underneath.
This looks cute.
Not nearly as cute as you. :)
The delivered changed to read.

It hurt her to stay, because she knew she was going to hurt him. And there’s only so much one can take before the weight building on their shoulders wears them down.
There had been many instances of Maddie hurting Chimney, unintentionally, and completely forgiven as he had assured her many times. She said she believed him. She did not, in fact believe him.
Maddie found her breaking point late one night, perhaps it was early one morning, everything kind of blending together through the morning sickness and general queasiness of the haze that were her days. She loved the little bean growing in her, and she would never regret her decision, but her baby was exactly like she expected. Difficult.
But it was in the fog, retching into the toilet, the foul taste of bile that was no longer there leaving a strong on her lips, blindly reaching behind her for, well, she couldn’t say now, perhaps a towel, or toilet paper, the search for something that was promptly halted when her hand connected with something solid, something that made a slight cracking noise, something that also let out a quiet “ow”. And it was a part of her mind that shut off the second she spun to see Chimney holding his nose, blood leaking through his fingertips, the part of her mind that immediately failed to recognise that this was an accident, one that he would most definitely forgive her for.
No, instead her brain shut off, flight or flight kicking in as she scrambled to her feet.
“I-I’m sorry, are you okay, I-I I should go.”
“No no no, I’m fine I promise, I promise, just go to bed, I’ll be there in a minute.”
Chimney didn’t know Maddie wasn’t headed to bed, he couldn’t have known when she crept out the door. She just wanted air, she told herself.
She meant to come back initially, she just needed some air, she told herself, but with the sun coming up in the distance, she couldn’t bring herself to return to her lover, not just yet. She walked and walked until her feet were as numb as her heart, until her tears dried down her face. Eventually, Maddie realised that even if she wanted to go home, she didn’t know how. She was lost.
Chimney was panicking. Reasoning thrown out the window, he began contacting everyone he knew, hoping, praying that at least one of them could give him answers. Hoping that Maddie ran to any of them, because the alternative… no. Don’t focus on that. His hands shook as he hit dial on the final person in his contacts, possibly the first person he should have called, if it wasn’t for the fear.
What would Buck think of him if he told him that he had lost his sister?
“Yea Chim?”
“Uh, Buck, Buck-”
“Chimney…” Buck sounded more concerned now, background noise ceased as he waited for a response.
“Buck I don’t know where she is.”
“I’m coming over.”
Buck was over in 5 minutes, which would be more concerning to Chimney if it wasn’t for the more pressing matters at hand.
“Okay, what happened?”
“She-she accidentally gave me a blood nose this morning, and I told her to just go to bed so I could clean it all up, and when I got back to bed, she, she was gone.” His voice cracked, heart slowly sinking in his chest as he recounted the events that lead to her disappearance.
“Contacted Athena?”
“Yea, she said she put out a notice. Buck, Buck I’m so sorr-”
“Uh uh, you’re as worried as I am, and we’re going to find her safe and sound. It’s going to be okay.”
Maddie ignored the rising panic in her gut as she kept walking. Soon, there would be people around. Soon she would find someone who she could use to contact Buck. She could contact Chim, but she couldn’t quite face him yet. Not after what she had done.
“Maddie.”
She turned, greeted by Athena.
“Athena.”
“Does Chimn-”
“No. No he doesn’t know. I don’t know what to do.”
“Go home. He’s terrified of what could have happened to you. ”
“I can’t, I hurt him. I hurt him, and I’ve hurt him so many times before, and, I don’t kno-”
“Maddie this is what’s going to happen. You’re going to get in the car, I’m going to get you some food, we’re going to call Chimney, and then I’m going to bring you home. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Chim, you might want to be here for this.”
Buck answered the phone, putting it on speaker.
“Chimney? Chimney?”
“Maddie!”
“Chimney! I’m safe, I promise, I’m coming home. I’m so sorry, but Howie, I’m coming home.”

I don’t have a prompt I just need more of that awkward moment when Maddie just had to pick chimney as her fake date 😭
Part 1
It was silent between the three of them, as silent as it could be in a crowded bar on a Friday night, but Chimney couldnt help but notice how Maddie’s hand was still holding his tightly.
“So.... uh Chim, how long exactly have you been dating my sister?”
Buck’s questions sounded less friendly and more like an interrogation, but Chimney could play along.
“Well, not quite dating i would say, but what has it been Mads, two, three months now?”
He mentally crossed his fingers that is timeline matched hers, breathing a sigh of relief when she agreed enthusiastically.
“Oh really, Chimney what’s her favourite drink?”
“Chardonnay.”
“What was she before she was a dispatcher?”
“A nurse.”
“What’s her secret talent?”
“Well, that’s difficult she has a lot of those,” Chimney tacked a chuckle on the end of his sentence, trying to buy himself a little more time, flickering his eyes around the bar until it settled on the karaoke system.
“I believe the one you’re talking about though is karaoke, well, singing.”
Buck looked taken aback, and Chimney received a small squeeze from Maddie.
“He’s right, now Buck if you would just, leave the investigation, Chimney and I actuallly have another bar to get to, we’re meeting Josh an the group, and well you know how they’ll be.”
She grabbed the shot, Chimney following suit, clicking the glasses together and downing the drink, placing them back on the table, before leading him out of the bar, wide grin on her face.
“How on earth did you know all that?”
“Well sometimes, Buck talks about his sister, you know, the one who used to be a nurse, and the one he was bringing home a bottle of Chardonnay for, and, well, i doubt he’s ever mentioned anything about singing, but with a voice like that, how cold you be bad at singing?”
Chimney glanced up at Maddie from his rambling, noticing she was blushing.
“Uh, yea, do we need to get to that other bar?”
“Oh,” Maddie shook herself out of her daze, noticing that she was still holding is hand. “No, no, that, that was a lie. I’m not meeting Josh.”
“Is this where we part ways then?”
“Yea. I guess so.”
She shyly tucked her hair behind her ear, giving him a soft smile, before turning, flicking a glance behind her, at the man who was still standing, watching her. Chimney couldn’t tell you what came over him in that moment, a surge of confidence, something that pushing him to run after her.
“Wait! Take this.”
A small scrap of paper was passed between them, on it, a phone number scrawled on in messy writing.
“You know, just in case you ever want to actually go on a date.”
“I’ll remember that.”
“Good. See you around Maddie.”
“You too, Howie.”

when was the last time you ate something?
Buck had every right to be a concerned uncle. Especially with the history that her mother had with... this.
Amelia had shown up to his apartment after school, asking for a hand with science, but within five minutes, she was fast asleep, and the more he looked at her, the more warning signs he spotted, ones that he recognised. Ones he wished he didn’t spot on his beloved niece.
It was two hours before she woke, almost as if her sleep had no effect on her, still as drowsy and lethargic as when she had arrived. Pale, tired, weak.
“Hey, ‘Melia?”
“Mmm.”
“When was the last time you ate something?”
“Um... i had an apple this morning?”
His heart only sank further as the conversation continued.
Please, don't lie to me. You don't have to.”
“I’m not lying, promise.”
“What about yesterday then? Or the day before that? Did you have an apple then too?”
He could see her eyes filling with tears as the confrontation continued, struggling to find a way out, a lie she could tell that would get him off her back, but Buck knew. He missed the signs once before, he wasn’t going to miss them again. He couldn’t miss them again.
“I didn’t mean to, I wanted to eat, I-I was so hungry. But she.. they, they kept telling me that no one would ever want me, because, because...”
She glanced down, wrapping her arms around her stomach, the word not even needed to be said. Buck got the picture.
“That’s not true. They aren’t right.”
“But they are! And this is working, I’ve dropped-”
“Amelia listen to me. Finding love has nothing to do with your size, or how you look, your mum and dad, they spent more time together in a hospital, where they were banged up and bruised, than they did anywhere else, and look at them. They love each other so much, and I know it’ll break both of their hearts if they knew his was happening, Amelia you are beautiful, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
“I can’t, Buck, every time i eat i feel sick, and, i feel so much better when i dont.”
“Bit by bit Amelia. I’ll be here for you every step of the way.”
Buck wasn’t prepared for her to rush forwards, flinging her small form against his chest, arms wrapped as tightly as they could around his waist. He was prepared, however, to hold her as long as she needed him to.
“Thank you. Thank you.”
“It’s no problem at all, and you know what, i think i have some pumpkin soup left over from dinner at the firehouse last night. Your favourite?”
“Yeah, yeah that sounds nice.” She mumbled into his chest, letting him guide her into the kitchen.
Buck wasn’t going to let the signs pass him by again.

why do you have a gun?
Buck knew if anything happened to her, he would never forgive himself.
He had offered to babysit Amelia, wanting to give Maddie and Chimney a date night, since why not? He loved spending time with the little girl, and she had been so excited when Buck told her they could build a blanket fort, and watch a movie, and even eat cotton candy if she didn’t tell her parents.
And all that had indeed gone to plan, with one happy, warm girl curled against his side as the opening scenes of Frozen began playing across the screen, a bowl of popcorn balancing precariously between them, both of them tucked under possibly too many blanket, all propped up with two chairs.
Unfortunately for Buck, this arrangement very quickly put quite a lot of strain on his back.
“Hey, Melia, can Uncle Buck take a quick bathroom break?”
“Okie!”
Buck paused the movie, struggling his way out of the fort, running to the bathroom.
On his way out, however, were when things went slightly downhill. It was a shadow out of the corner of his eye that he spotted, trying not to look directly at it, whatever, or whoever it was, wouldn’t know he saw them. Buck took his time washing his hands, drying his hands and pulling out his phone, wracking his brain for a solution. It was definitely a person, probably a man, if the broad silhouette was any hint. He slowly called 911, waiting for a pick up before ducking around the corner.
“911, what is your emergency?”
“Hi, uh, there’s a guy standing outside my house, and he’s been there for a while, he doesn’t look to be armed...”
Lightbulb went off in his head as he crept towards his bedroom, where there was a gun safe, and a handgun, if he remembered what he had been gifted for his birthday. Rattling off his address while his hands worked on the safe. He pulled out the gun, creeping back towards the tv room.
“Help is on the way.”
“Thank you.”
He left the call on, but tucked his phone away, just in case he needed his hands.
“Why do you have a gun?”
Buck’s blood ran cold. How could he forget what the focus of this whole night had been about, how could he forget about her?
“Okay Amelia, you have to do something for uncle Buck, okay?”
“Okay! What is it?”
“You know the little box in my bedroom?”
“The one with the blankets?”
“Yes, that one, i need you to go into my room and pull the box behind the bed, and then get in it, okay? Tuck yourself in, get comfortable, try to cover your ears, got it?”
“Mmmm okay. Why?”
“Auntie Athena is coming over in a bit, and we want to surprise her by hiding!”
“Oh yay, I’ll go hide now.”
“Good girl. I’ll come get you later.”
Little feet ran down the hall, door shutting quiet after her, letting out a slight sigh of relief as he turned back to problem on hand, freezing again as his eyes scanned the outside of his apartment. The man was gone. Which meant one of two things. Either he got bored and left, or...
He was already inside.
On instinct, Buck ducked and rolled, the shadow of an arm flying over where his head had just been. The glint of a knife was the next thing Buck saw, rushing towards his face, it was just a lucky swerve that saved him. How far away were police?
The sirens followed by the piercing blue and red lights coming through the window gave him his answer, followed swiftly by the sound of a door opening.
“FREEZE!”
Buck immediately dropped the gun, leaping away from the man dressed in black, who also dropped his knife, slowly raising his hands.
Athena ran in, looking between the two before gesturing to the other officers, who surged forwards to the other man, cuffing him and leading him away.
“Well well well.”
“Thanks Athena. Now, i did tell Amelia that you were coming over.”
“Amelia is here?”
“Yes? Speaking of, do me a favour and don’t tell Maddie or Chimney this ever happened.”

“Can’t you stay a little longer?”
“It’s not that easy.”
“I’ve had enough.”
“I fell in love with you, not them.”
“You’re the only one I wanna wake up next to.”
