Personal transformation is neither fast nor easy. It is an intentional progression toward greatness through hard work and awareness of the whole self: mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. The rewards, however, are well worth the efforts.

The  High Cost of Teacher Turnover
Teacher retention is a major concern for all school districts. Studies show that nearly half of new teachers will transfer to a different school or leave the profession altogether within the first five years of their career1.
While not all turnover is preventable (retirements, family issues), nor is it all bad (fresh ideas, elimination of subpar performers), it is extremely costly. The expenses encompass financial aspects, human capital outlays, and student performance issues. Turnover costs include recruitment, training and orientation, separation processing, substitute coverage, singing bonuses, and stipend payments. Additionally, the time and energy put forth by administrators into filling positions must be taken into account. Most importantly, there is a student component. Many teachers leave a position before they have mastered the ability to create a successful learning culture within their classroom. With the turmoil of turnover comes a lack of learning.
Most turnover is driven by school conditions, not monetary concerns. The biggest issues rest with the administration. Management issues such as how much say a faculty has in creating policy, how much leeway is permitted in classrooms, and behavioral procedures are the principal drivers of frustration among teachers1. Job dissatisfaction is one of the primary causes cited by teachers transferring districts: 52% reported a lack of influence over school policy as a reason for leaving2.
While the causes for turnover may not be fiscal in nature, the impact on the budget cannot be disputed. Each year in the United States, roughly $2.2 billion annually is spent on replacing teachers who change careers. When costs of replacing transferring teachers are taken into consideration, that figure increases to an astounding $4.9 billion2.
The money spent filling vacated positions would be better allocated by investing in teacher support and development. Teachers crave professional support, collaboration, and feedback. Leadership development and a culture that supports teamwork and fosters cross-curricular cooperation are critical components of a comprehensive induction program. While these programs are invaluable for those new to the profession, veteran teachers benefit from them, too. They reinforce skills and improve overall job satisfaction.

“Most of the best business cultures do not start accidentally or come about organically, by chance. They start at the top but are not top-down environments. They come from CEOs who are not convinced that their way is the only way, but instead understand that leadership means bringing together the talents, ideas, and abilities of an entire team of diverse individuals. I experienced this in Pittsburgh under head coach Mike Tomlin, as discussed in Chapter 7. His brand of team culture brought everyone together. Establishing a culture you believe in, as I’ve learned, means having a clear and consistent vision and knowing how you would like everyone, inside and outside, to view the company. Many old-school CEOs and leaders were often “business operations first and people second.” But it is the people that make a business successful. The greater inclusion of people in the operation of the business has led to far more significant contributions by employees, which spill over to more appreciation from customers. So unless you are alone with nothing but technology, your business is built around people producing products and providing services for other people.” _

The Road to Self-Awareness
“ We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” Mahatma Gandhi
The power of self-awareness cannot be overstated. Resonant leaders emphatically stay true to themselves. They uphold their values and beliefs, leading with their hearts as well as their minds, and empower those around them.
Honesty with oneself is the first step in becoming a genuine, transformational leader. This practice is easier said than done. Self-discovery is a challenging process which forces confrontation of deficiencies, vulnerabilities, and obstacles that must be overcome for success. It involves coalescing experiences to form a big-picture view of one’s true self. Since a component of great leadership is the authenticity of treating others as one treats oneself, this process also involves soliciting feedback and opinions. These must be absorbed with an open mind, void of judgement or defensiveness.
Personal transformation is neither fast nor easy. It is an intentional progression toward greatness through hard work and awareness of the whole self: mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. The rewards, however, are well worth the efforts.
