Written for Day 7 of @acocweek; Romance + Saccharina. Read on AO3 here.
“I’ll be sending Annabelle Cheddar as my diplomat for the discussion of how Candia’s new borders affects the Dairy Islands,” says Primsy Coldbottle in her letter. It’s not a big deal, thankfully. The Dairy Islands hadn’t really lost any land, or even much sea, after Liam’s Wish. It mostly dug into Fructera, into Ceresia, even into the edges of Vegetania. Considerate, to leave the Meatlands and the Islands out of it.
But magic’s always been a good thing, so Saccharina’s not surprised.
“Cool that I get to see Annabelle again,” says Ruby. “Did I ever tell you Jet had a crush on her? I mean, I’m pretty sure anyway.”
“No,” says Saccharina. “This is the Annabelle Cheddar who rejected her throne because she didn’t want to get married, right?”

A Crown of Candy Playlist
last day of #acocweek finally finished my playlist, but I don’t think I’ll ever be done with acoc, unless it finishes me off first https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7eR5DjzMpkgraFHDLCM9uq?si=4fed68da6eba4536

Death keeps coming, and coming, and coming. That’s the life of a pirate - a heretic leader, a rebel against both church and state. Half the continent has heard of her under one name or another, and anyone with a weapon on land or on sea is all too eager to try and kill her with as much brutal efficacy as possible.
After a little while, Saccharina doesn’t really mind.
***
(Or: Death keeps finding Saccharina Frostwhip. She comes back every time - a little different, but no less determined.)
Sneaking in just a smidge past the official deadlines to throw out a continuation of an old work of mine for @acocweek day 7! It’s a companion piece to my previous writing about Jet, Ruby, and Liam - a brief examination of Saccharina, ft. death, life, mild body horror, piracy, and hurricane vocabulary lessons.

Or, a final conversation between Lazuli and Caramelinda.

Resurrection is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.
Lapin Cadbury comes back from the dead. Everyone has thoughts on that.
It’s up! The ‘Lapin and Cumulous chill roommates fic’ is finally done and posted, right in time for @acocweek! Writing this fic has been a wild ride, from crack idea to deep reflection on the nature of death and memory to a little (just a little) assault and battery.
It’s fine, no Swiftys were (permanently) harmed in the writing of this fic.
Feat. Lapin and Cumulous being chill roommates, absolutely no one else having a chill time, angst, food puns, more existential angst, a dash of Theopin, the complicated dynamics of grief and trauma and memory, generally poor coping mechanisms all around, and of course, the Lapin swoop.
Enjoy!

Inheritance | A Crown of Candy fic
Happy @acocweek! This is for Day 6, Alternate Universe/Favorite Backup PC. I picked Bitternight Darknibs because I think she kicks ass. If you aren’t familiar with her, I recommend checking out her wiki page before reading this.
[warnings: blood, violence]
Also on AO3!
–
This is stupid, Ruby says. You shouldn’t talk to Bitternight. I think she’s, like, a maniac.
Yeah, Jet says, but you’re dead, so you don’t get a vote.
I should get double votes. Because I’m dead.
I get triple votes, Jet says, because I had to dig your grave, and the wisp of Ruby she carries in the back of her brain flares bright and then goes out. It’s just Jet in the hallway of the monastery, standing outside of Bitternight’s door, trying to figure out whether it’s cooler to knock or pick the lock or just walk in.

for day 6 of @acocweek i chose to do something for "alternate universe" and share a song i wrote over a year ago, POMME D'AMOUR! an episode or two into the campaign, a popular theory was that caramelinda was a candy apple plotting to overthrow amethar. i wrote a song about it. we quickly realised that wouldn't happen. then calroy betrayed amethar, i thought about pomme d'amour, and thought, well, would you look at that, and rewrote the song into angel cake. the rest is history, but this is a fun little glimpse into what could have been - if caramelinda had been the one to betray amethar.
sidenote: pomme d'amour means candy apple in french, but literally translates to apple of love. i liked the irony.

[Image description: a digital comic focused on Saccharina and Ruby. It's colored exclusively in shades of red and pink.
It starts with Ruby sitting on a window seat, embroidery circle on her lap. Saccharina, walking up to her, asks, "What are you doing?" Ruby replies, "Oh, Primsy's teaching me how to embroider."
Saccharina looks down at Ruby's work- it's a very messy piece of hard candy--clearly done by a beginner. She sweats nervously. She looks awkwardly at Ruby. Ruby blushes and says, "Shut up. It's supposed to be the Rocks crest."
Saccharina rubs the back of her head and says, "I didn't say anything." Ruby, upset, yells, "Well I felt it!"
They glare at each other for a heated moment, before the anger deflates. They look away, both sheepish.
Ruby, still looking off to the side, says, "Do you... want to join me?" She grabs a ball of thread and continues, "Embroidering, I mean?" She presents it to Saccharina and says, "I mean. If you know how--"
Saccharina interrupts her. "I do. The nuns taught me. I haven't done it in a very long time." Behind her, an illustration of her thoughts. Small hands embroidering a lightbulb, another hand pointing forward.
Ruby looks away and begins to move her hands away as she says, "Oh. You don't have to--"
Saccharina moves forward and takes the thread. They look at each other. Saccharina sits down on the window bench, and has an embroidery circle of her own in her hands. They both have small smiles.
A tangled line of thread winds down the last panel. In the center are the two circles. One has a clean, crisp piece of hard candy embroidered on it. The other is more rough, with messy stitches. Speech bubbles float around them. Ruby says, "Woah! You're good!"
Saccharina replies, "Thanks. Yours is... good too."
Ruby says, "You don't have to lie to me, Saccharina." One or both of them laughs. End description.]

almost forgot to post this here but here’s a post-canon saccharina & ruby comic for @acocweek!! things are rocky but they are slowly healing :’)

i know i said what i posted yesterday was also for day 5 of @acocweek, but i couldn’t help myself, so here’s something else for “angst” <3 quote from animal flag’s st cecilia.
[Image ID: digital drawing. Belizabeth Brassica, seeming very small, is kneeling in the apse of a cathedral before huge stained glass windows representing Saint Citrina holding up the Bulb and pushing away the Hungry One. Behind Citrina is a halo exploding into rays of yellow, orange, red and purple. The lighting is soft and warm. Over the illustration appear the words “every time I kneel down to meet my maker, the only thing I see is your face”. End ID]

(Image description: a digital comic focused on Saccharina and Ruby. At the top of the image, there is a close up of their faces. In Saccharina's, she's staring coldly through her eyelashes. In Ruby's, she's glaring furiously. The bottom of the drawing shows their encounter; they're in a dark forest. Saccharina holds her staff in one hand, and has young Cinnamon perched on the other. Ruby is looking over her shoulder at Saccharina, one hand holding her bow and the other resting on the hilt of her rapier. End Description.)

possessed gramophone
Written for Day 6 of @acocweek; Alternate Universe + Favorite Backup Character + Cumulous.
“This house is, definitively, haunted,” Lazuli concludes, and Cumulous wouldn’t believe her if she hadn’t died here over a decade ago.
“Oh,” Cumulous says. “So you were actually right about all the ghost things.”
“It seems so,” Lazuli says, seemingly happier to be vindicated in being right than annoyed about being dead. That’s very Lazuli, though, so he won’t question it. “How did the business do?”
Ghost hunting’s had its boom with the whole internet craze over it, all the Unsolveds and the Ghostfacers and the Haunted House Inspections. (Cumulous really likes that last one.) But there’s only so much ghost hunting business a town of 800 will have, and the tourism Dulcington gets over the haunted Rocks house is really only a summer thing.
Still. This might be enough to push it over.

and sisters
Written for Day 3 of @acocweek; Hurt/Comfort + Favorite Scene + the Twins.
When Saccharina’s eyes meet Ruby’s from across the battlefield, it would be easier than anything to kill her. Her arrows aren’t anything special; it’s her bow that’s distinctive. No one would know. But there’s something in her expression–the way her fear fades into an acceptance, into a cautious hope, that makes her think of Jet. It’s not an expression Jet carried or anything; Jet was all brash confidence and loyalty, would never look at Ruby with anything other than love.
But still.
They talk, Saccharina sitting on a monster and Ruby feeling like one. She lets her bow drop without nocking an arrow, walks through the ruins of her old home and sees the rest of her family alive and well. Frosting on her father’s sword reassures her that Jet is well and truly avenged, and Theobald reminds them that Amethar can be Emperor instead of King and that Saccharina can be Queen without her dragon eating Ruby’s–their father alive.
Everything’s fine, basically. Ruby still feels like she needs to kill someone, if only to do something with her hands.
