The whole world knew that nuclear war was brewing, but no one felt the need to try and stop it, and as such... The world ended. Mostly. Several governments of the world decided that should nuclear war engulf the world, humanity would need a way to survive, an metaphorical ark. As such, they constructed a megastructure the likes of which the world has never seen, a colossal dome constructed of stone and metal, completely impervious to any catastrophe which may occur. It spanned the distance of several cities, cost the wealth of several countries, and required a mountains worth of ore, but finally... it was completed... a structure immune to the ravages of war and time.

After their ‘birth’ and placement into their metal shells, newborns are placed into buildings known as nursery’s.
A lot less macabre than they may appear, these nursery’s hold newborns in a safe environment in which they can learn required skills such as speech, motor skills, and basic mathematics and literacy skills. Besides this they are also uploaded with the history of their culture, conversational skills, basic mechanical skills, and knowledge of self defence.
This is a required step in their life to allow biological functions to sync with those of their mechanical body, and enable them control over their limbs as if they were organic.
A crucial point here is the development of their personalities and consciousness, at birth they are blank slates without form or gender and as such, their time in the nursery allows them to understand who they truly are as people.
Newborns will typically spend between 3 and 5 years in the nursery, depending upon intelligence.

Sealed within a blackened titanium shell is the core organic components of each person, completely protected from the environment and the outside world.
They are not made to be opened.
Fixed directly on to the core of the body is an arrangement of dense metal ribs, onto which an arrangement of base protective panels, an artificial nervous system, and core movement servos are connected.
From this point, the person can customise themselves in nearly any way they see fit, attaching any number of limbs or attachments onto their body in whichever way they feel comfortable, but although they have the option to create any kind of fantastical body, most people seem to choose the Base human configuration.

After many thousands of years in isolation, humanity took their next evolutionary leap and left behind their weak organic bodies, in favour of powerful, ageless bodies forged of metal.
But not all is as it seems, no computer could ever contain a human consciousness, and as such a human brain (and in turn a human heart) was a necessary component in their new perfect forms.
Genetically engineered to be born as senseless masses of blood and brain matter, this remnant of humanity is placed within an enviromentally sealed titanium shell and fused with a metal exoskeleton in which it will live out its life.
Genderless, immune from disease, and free from the constraints of time.

Awaken. The word echoes deep within my mind. I cling to it, a single stimulus within an eternal sea of darkness. Awaken... From what? Is this life? Death? Who knows... all I know is the perpetual abyss, lasting eternally. Hours have passed. At least, that's how this feels. Hours, minutes, seconds. They are all but one in this void of existence, devoid of all light, warmth, and sound. Except... it's not. I notice it, a dull humming noise, faint and barely noticeable but definitely there. Part of me feels like this should provide me with comfort, that I should welcome this white noise, embrace it even, but somewhere in my subconscious I can tell that it's unnatural, not meant to be there... Wrong.
