Hi, I’m Dren! If you’re wondering why a whump blog followed you, it’s probably for one of my sideblogs (aesthetic, writing, Tumblr favorites, etc). On my main here, you’ll find whumpy fics, ficlets, prompts, and reblogs. Me: she/her, ancient by Tumblr standards, INTJ.

Murderbot 1x06 "Feed Command"
(quick note that the "speaks gibberish" portion in the Apple tv subtitles is actually Swedish and I got the words and translations from both this tumblr post and this reddit thread. I do not speak a lick of Swedish and it seems like the no one really knows what the one part between På burk and Bankman are so I went with syllables that I heard. If someone knows what it is PLEASE let me know so I can fix it.)
#i am loving this show a lot#i read the books and i was dubious about skarsgård#but he's grown on me#just gonna note (with no spoilers)#my husband had the same reaction as pin lee#to that scene at the end of ep 6

"If you use em dash in your works, it makes them look AI generated. No real human uses em dash."
Imaging thinking actual human writers are Not Real because they use... professional writing in their works.
Imagine thinking millions of people who have been using em dash way before AI becomes a thing are all robots.
REBLOG IF YOU'RE A HUMAN AND YOU USE EM DASH
#writing#le sigh#ai was trained on writing by humans#so that's what it's copying#i use it most often at the end of a dialogue line when a character gets interrupted#but it's the right choice in other situations too#someone said it was hard to insert an em dash into text#but many platforms let you type a double dash -- and automatically convert it to an em dash#not tumblr of course#lol

Idk if I'm just looking in the wrong places but I feel like the most popular type of whump I see is like, where the whumpee is like crying and begging and falling apart with fear, and as someone who prefers stoic and/or defiant whumpees, I am fucking starving out here my dudes
#this this this#both points#i can’t make myself read a scene or story with archetype names#i’ve probably missed some excellent writing#but reading along and hitting Whumpee or Sidekick is like a rubber band snap to the brain#begging people to just pick a name#make some oc’s#(preferably stoic or defiant ones. just for me lol)

I don't see it often so i was wondering
#polls#well i've written it myself so#it's cool#though i will note two things#there's still only one OC I write in first person#i have other protags but they all want to be in third#also cade will not let me talk about all the whump#he insists on leaving things out#but if you read between the lines you can get the gist of it#yes that sounds weird#but if you write#you know what i mean

Thinking about manhandling again (a common pasttime)
Whumpee being forced to their knees in front of Whumper and/or their team
Pushing Whumpee's head down to make them stare at the floor and keeping them in the uncomfortable slumped posture
Whumpee being hauled to their feet by a grip on their upper arm, maybe causing bruising
A hand on the back of Whumpee's neck to force them down, either to the ground or over a surface like a table in order to wrestle them into cuffs
Dragging Whumpee back by the ankle when they try to crawl away from Whumper
Shoving a handcuffed Whumpee forward impatiently
Whumper surprising Whumpee and grabbing them from behind, an arm wrapping around their neck or a hand covering their mouth to keep them quiet
Just
Manhandling~
#manhandling#yes please#always a fave#i haven't written the table thing into a story yet#probably won't fit in this current wip but maybe another one#cade would be so angry about it lol

As an actor and writer, I find it so funny how actors will say stuff about “taking care of” their character and respecting them meanwhile writers are like “beat that bitch into the ground.”

So here’s an interesting writing exercise: regardless of what POV you’re using in your WIP, try some different ones. As in, different characters. I can’t be the first person to suggest this, but I sort of stumbled into it myself.
As usual, I’m using close third POV for False Horizon, but I’ve experimented with writing from the kid’s POV and from the antagonist’s. And even from a hypothetical character who learns the story later.
They aren’t long snippets, since I’m too impatient to get back to writing the main story, but it’s easier to figure out what the antagonist will do when I’ve been in his head. The kid too; writing from his POV makes me think about how he interprets events. It adds depth and motivation where things might have been a bit fuzzy.
In short: 10/10 do recommend
#writing#am writing#false horizon#also it’s loads of fun#villains rarely see themselves as villains#so you have to ask ‘what kind of person thinks these actions are justified?’#the answers may surprise you#i actually wrote a short convo between bad guys for the chris & emma story#never posted it#but i might#just as an example#also it’s dipping my toe into multiple POV i guess lol#haven’t done that before now really but it’s a skill i should probably learn

I love finding plot holes. In my own work, I mean, while writing. Not so much after it's been posted lol.
But I can be writing along and think, "Oh, crap, this character shouldn't know that" or, alternatively, "This character should know that already." Or "Why doesn't Character A just call/text Character B?" And I don't mind, because that's when I have to get creative. Surprisingly often, the solution I come up with deepens the world, or raises the stakes, in a way I wouldn't have thought of if the problem hadn't arisen.
#writing#am writing#writer world problems#false horizon#i'm at 30K words now#still thinking it'll end up around 40K

Just a quick update to note that the novel I'm not writing (or probably novella) is up to 27,000 words. Slow and steady, etc.
#writing#am writing#wip#false horizon#got a new challenge ahead#i want to write a gunfight#just between two people#step 1 for me will be a map of where it happens

hello yes i am still waiting on the emma & cade story but it’s ok, i’ll take the bodyguard novel as compensation.
Hi Anon! I actually thought about you the other day, lol. Someone posted a meme about chasing a shiny new WIP and I thought, man, I've got to get back to Emma & Cade after I finish this. The good news is, I think the bodyguard story is going well! It may not be novel-length once I'm done, but I'm OK with that. Right now it looks like it might end up around maybe 40K words? And I'm at 22K right now. I think you guys will like Mark; he's a little more chill than Cade. Most days, anyway. I'm kinda putting him through the wringer. 😈😂
#asks answered#emma & cade#false horizon#i also got a BTHB card right before this story took over my brain lol#i'll post it eventually

reblogs appreciated for greater sample size
#polls#i do use tags to classify posts#but more often i use them to help people block if they want to#for trigger reasons or squicks or just plain annoyances#it's the nature of whump#i post on topics that some people might want to avoid#so i try to make it easy#and also tags are for rambles like this

If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"
