Not A Good Day
1K posts
Hi, I’m Dren! If you’re wondering why a whump blog followed you, it’s probably for one of my sideblogs (aesthetic, writing, Tumblr favorites, etc).  On my main here, you’ll find whumpy fics, ficlets, prompts, and reblogs. Me: she/her, ancient by Tumblr standards, INTJ.

When you want to add a scene to your story and realize you’ve opened up the possibility of a subplot that will need several more scenes…

Murderbot 1x06 "Feed Command"
(quick note that the "speaks gibberish" portion in the Apple tv subtitles is actually Swedish and I got the words and translations from both this tumblr post and this reddit thread. I do not speak a lick of Swedish and it seems like the no one really knows what the one part between På burk and Bankman are so I went with syllables that I heard. If someone knows what it is PLEASE let me know so I can fix it.)

"If you use em dash in your works, it makes them look AI generated. No real human uses em dash."
Imaging thinking actual human writers are Not Real because they use... professional writing in their works.
Imagine thinking millions of people who have been using em dash way before AI becomes a thing are all robots.
REBLOG IF YOU'RE A HUMAN AND YOU USE EM DASH

Idk if I'm just looking in the wrong places but I feel like the most popular type of whump I see is like, where the whumpee is like crying and begging and falling apart with fear, and as someone who prefers stoic and/or defiant whumpees, I am fucking starving out here my dudes

Thinking about manhandling again (a common pasttime)
Whumpee being forced to their knees in front of Whumper and/or their team
Pushing Whumpee's head down to make them stare at the floor and keeping them in the uncomfortable slumped posture
Whumpee being hauled to their feet by a grip on their upper arm, maybe causing bruising
A hand on the back of Whumpee's neck to force them down, either to the ground or over a surface like a table in order to wrestle them into cuffs
Dragging Whumpee back by the ankle when they try to crawl away from Whumper
Shoving a handcuffed Whumpee forward impatiently
Whumper surprising Whumpee and grabbing them from behind, an arm wrapping around their neck or a hand covering their mouth to keep them quiet
Just
Manhandling~

As an actor and writer, I find it so funny how actors will say stuff about “taking care of” their character and respecting them meanwhile writers are like “beat that bitch into the ground.”

So here’s an interesting writing exercise: regardless of what POV you’re using in your WIP, try some different ones. As in, different characters. I can’t be the first person to suggest this, but I sort of stumbled into it myself.
As usual, I’m using close third POV for False Horizon, but I’ve experimented with writing from the kid’s POV and from the antagonist’s. And even from a hypothetical character who learns the story later.
They aren’t long snippets, since I’m too impatient to get back to writing the main story, but it’s easier to figure out what the antagonist will do when I’ve been in his head. The kid too; writing from his POV makes me think about how he interprets events. It adds depth and motivation where things might have been a bit fuzzy.
In short: 10/10 do recommend

I love finding plot holes. In my own work, I mean, while writing. Not so much after it's been posted lol.
But I can be writing along and think, "Oh, crap, this character shouldn't know that" or, alternatively, "This character should know that already." Or "Why doesn't Character A just call/text Character B?" And I don't mind, because that's when I have to get creative. Surprisingly often, the solution I come up with deepens the world, or raises the stakes, in a way I wouldn't have thought of if the problem hadn't arisen.

Just a quick update to note that the novel I'm not writing (or probably novella) is up to 27,000 words. Slow and steady, etc.

hello yes i am still waiting on the emma & cade story but it’s ok, i’ll take the bodyguard novel as compensation.
Hi Anon! I actually thought about you the other day, lol. Someone posted a meme about chasing a shiny new WIP and I thought, man, I've got to get back to Emma & Cade after I finish this. The good news is, I think the bodyguard story is going well! It may not be novel-length once I'm done, but I'm OK with that. Right now it looks like it might end up around maybe 40K words? And I'm at 22K right now. I think you guys will like Mark; he's a little more chill than Cade. Most days, anyway. I'm kinda putting him through the wringer. 😈😂

If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"
