HI the rendering in your recent Toph piece looks so amazing and I am kinda terrible at rendering, I wonder if you might be able to give a little process explanation/tutorial?? It's very soft and dreamy I love your art styleeeee💕

Oh my gosh, first of all, thank you!! I'll try my best! Sorry if it's verbose, I'll add a TL;DR at the end lol.

On my Instagram, I usually post some stages/parts of the process, so feel free to check that out if visual explanations help you more. As far as a verbal explanation, I don't totally have just one method, it changes depending on what I'm working on, so I'll talk specifically about that Toph piece!

After the "lineart" (which is just a cleaned up sketch), I went ahead and put on the base colors. Tbh I just slap them on one at a time and adjust them until it looks about right. I colored the lineart to be a darker and more saturated version of the base colors. I do the lineart and rendering with the same brush, with a chalk texture, but the base colors and shadows I do with the default round pen. I believe for that one, since most of it was covered in shadows, I put a multiply layer on top of everything and erased the light parts, with a random color that I also adjusted afterwards till it looked right. I also added a second, deeper multiply layer for contact shadows, in a cooler tone and darker than the first one. I then added the 'redness' by using an overlay layer, everywhere the light/shadow touched the base color, and a lot around her face. Rendering was very simple, just some basic blending with the chalk textured brush! Some highlights on her face and hair, and that's basically it! To get the "soft" look, I copied the entire drawing and pasted it, then set that layer to "hard light", applied some light gaussian blur, and set the opacity to be very low, so the effect would be subtle! I've seen that be called the 'dream/flashback anime filter effect' lol.

TL;DR: I use a chalk texture for rendering, and I added variance to the skin tone, and especially because I was using strong light, I used 'overlay' with an orange-red wherever the light touched the base color. That adds a surprising amount of life to skin. For the "softness", I used "hard light" mode, but slightly blurred, with low opacity!
