Compost Pile

This year I started composting
I didn’t buy an expensive compost turner. Just put some old tomato stakes in the ground and wrapped some chicken wire around it to close the area off. But I don’t even think that’s totally necessary 🤷♀️
This is the layering system I’ve been using:

Thankfully I work at a restaurant and have a bucket set aside for when the kitchen has scraps from food prepping - we are flush with “green” material.
Green material=veggie and fruit scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds
Brown material=torn up cardboard, leaves, mulch
You can find more information online but we kept it really simple. I am using an old dog crate to kind of filter the pile and store the soil. This won’t happen for awhile but I’m already starting to see some dark rich soil under the scraps, lots of worms!
Bonus - I have significantly less trash. No point in filling a plastic trash bag with things that can decompose naturally back into the earth!

My first eco-brick!
Once I accumulate enough I plan on using them for small building projects in the yard.

Dust Cleaner (DIY Pledge)
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup filtered water
2 tablespoons olive oil
10-15 drops essential oil (I used lemon)
Shake before use
So far I like this recipe. I could definitely see myself using this over buying Pledge for the long run.
On another note, I knew hoarding spray bottles from old cleaning products would come into use some day

Orange Vinegar Surface Cleaner
Had these clementines getting soft in the fridge so I cut them up and soaked them in vinegar for a few days. Then I drained it into a spray bottle, diluting it with a 1:1 ratio of filtered water.
Bonus-i got to throw all the peels into my compost

Tooth Powder
1/4c. Benotite clay
3 tablespoon calcium carbonate
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
I don’t use this as a replacement to my toothpaste but I’ve been using it as a supplement, sometimes substituting for my morning brush. Honestly my teeth have been super white and my gums look healthier.

Natural Deodorant
2T shea butter
2T coconut oil
2T soy wax (called for beeswax but save the bees!)
3t arrowroot powder
Few drops of essential oils
Honestly this is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant. I might need that aluminum 😭 but maybe my body will adjust?

It's punk to compost, in a world filled with trash.
It's punk to be fat, in a world that wants you to keep getting smaller.
It's punk to ride an old bike, drive an old car, patch your old clothes with different colored thread, cut up old sheets for rags instead of using paper towels, and make stuffed animals out of scrap fabric, in a world that wants you to just "order it off amazon".
It's punk to tend a messy, overgrown, weed-filled garden. Tomatoes grow right next to dandelions.
It's punk to can the veggies from your messy garden and give your neighbors delicious tomato soup in the depths of winter.
It's punk to make a bird feeder and look out the window to take a break from your screen.
It's punk to wear your "Let Trans Kids Play" shirt to a college basketball game where there are no trans players, because a trans kid in the crowd will see it and maybe (this year) decide to join the team.
It's punk to have wrinkles, when the world wants you to stop aging at 23.
It's punk to go to your local library.
It's punk to take your kids to your local library.
It's punk to take your kids to a pride parade, a sit-in, a land-back ceremony, an accessible trunk-or-treat, a soup kitchen.
It's punk to plant trees. It's punk to PROTECT trees.
It's punk save for solar panels, someday.
It's punk to hope, whenever you can.

Dryer Sheets:
1 1/2c white vinegar
1/2c filtered water
10-12 drops essential oils
This doesn’t do much for static electricity but I heard if you throw some wool balls in there it helps! I use tea tree oil and it makes my clothes smell fresh and not overwhelming
