I miss when fandom let people be fictional.

Back in the early 2000s, you stanned an actor because they played a role that made you feel something—not because their worldview matched yours perfectly. You saw them on a red carpet, maybe a cute interview clip, and that was it. You weren’t dissecting their personal life like it was your moral duty.

Now it’s like… the second someone reveals a bad opinion, it becomes a performance of outrage. Everyone races to unfollow them loudly, scream “I always knew!!!” and turn it into a moral referendum. When most of the time, it’s just a guy who says dumb shit online because he’s never had to think critically about anything in his life.

And listen—it’s completely valid if someone saw that post and decided they don’t want to support him anymore. That’s a personal boundary, and people are allowed to have them. But there’s a difference between stepping away and turning it into a public hate train. We spend so much time pointing fingers at how hateful the right is, but when someone disappoints us, fandom becomes a beast. The cruelty, the dogpiling, the “block me if you still follow him” energy—it’s all just another form of control dressed up as righteousness.

Doesn’t mean you excuse it. Doesn’t mean you pretend it didn’t happen. It just means you don’t have to perform heartbreak over someone who was never that deep to begin with. I liked the character. I liked the work. I never needed the man behind it to be my activist king.

Adult realization: you will make mistakes, you will act irrationally. You will commit some wrongs that cannot be fully righted. People will dislike you and misunderstand you for all sorts of reasons. None of these make you a bad person. All you can do is try your best to be kind and just to people, grow and learn.

I really hope this stuff with Ryan has taught people not to put ANY celebrity on a pedestal or even idolise them with these weird parasocial relationships that you think you have with them.

No matter WHO they are, we will NEVER know the true them.

We are not their friends.

We are not their family.

We never will be.

We don't know what their beliefs are behind closed doors and in the sanctuary of their own home.

Yes, what Ryan has liked is harmful and upsetting, but at the end of the day (like I've seen on other pages) they are HIS views and as much as we do not like them, he is allowed to have his own views and his own opinions on things and we don't have a say in what he can like or dislike, unfortunately.

Cause at the end of the day, his views don't affect my views. I view things differently to him, and that's fine. At the end of the day, I'm here for Eddie, Buck, Buddie, and Ryliver's photography. Their personal views on ANY topic, I don't care about, because I know my views and beliefs about things will different from others, and that's okay.

Let this be a lesson to us also to separate the character and actor. We can absolutely adore Eddie whilst not liking Ryan, and that is perfectly fine to do so!

You can’t make assumptions about what people support based on one instagram like/follow. You just can’t. And it’s extremely harmful if you do. Real people aren’t perfect. Good people say harmful things. And when they do, you call them out and educate them. You don’t hate on them. When you do, bad people win.

Why exactly do you think anti-gender movement is so strong atm? It’s because it consist of people who share one common goal, but have otherwise completely different ideologies.

Opposite movement can’t never win, if we expect people to be perfect. And once they make a mistake, we hate on them. The anti-gender ideology is so wildly spread out that many people don’t even understand it’s there when they say something or like something. That’s why we need to tell them and educate them on what kind of views they are giving a platform.

But just like you can’t say someone is pro trans/queer/black lives matter based on the fact they follow a trans/queer/black person or are friends with them, the same way you can’t say they are anti when they like a post with anti-trans/queer/black message. It’s not as simple as that. And if we think and behave like it is, anti-gender movement will just keep growing.

This does not mean you can’t be hurt of course you can.

the one thing i'm gonna say about rg liking that reel, and i beg you, read it through, is we can and should drop a celeb like a hot potato and stop supporting them if their core beliefs are harmful but he's just a drop in the bucket. rg is not that famous and the people who follow him with this level of dedication are mostly fandom engagers who are already aware to some degree about gender equality or have fundamentally left aligned values.

we can all collectively agree to cancel him but that's not gonna make a difference. the real bad guy here is the white religious reactionary cult crafting insidious social media videos that appeal to hundreds of thousands of regular people enough that they don't realise it's alt right bullshit, enough that they're willing to overlook the stuff they don't agree with or sounds silly (recycled toilet water come the fuck on). the first comment on that reel is a woman defending public education and gender equality but agreeing with the rest of it.

the problem is not that rg liked it and may or may not agree with all the statements, he's just one dude. the problem is that a lot of people will disagree with some of them but be disenchanted enough to join that lifestyle, and after a while they'll renounce that one belief they were holding onto. the problem is we can point and tell from the outside all we want and celebrate the people who made it out as heroes, but the people inside and the people on the fringes need the help. fuck rg. i'm talking about your aunt who is distrustful of the USA medical system and likes baking from scratch. i'm talking about your childhood friend with a food allergy that is swarmed by alt right homesteading videos because they wanted to look up allergen free recipes. the alt right exploiting that pipeline is not accidental, it's a move out of the Nazi propaganda playbook, find dissatisfaction and pin the blame on something ambiguous enough that lots of people buy into it.

alt right cults are the real enemy.

the "they're monsters" narrative negates that regular people can be manipulated into joining evil belief systems.

calling out rg is basic human decency. calling out the cult and educating people on the dangers of that kind of discourse is actual activism.
