“Wake up, babe!” Johnny exclaimed as he entered the bedroom where you groggily laid. “Your hot boyfriend has prepared breakfast in bed.” You shuffled to sit up against your headboard and he say beside you, adding a TV tray to your lap with a bowl of cereal, a glass of orange juice, and a little bowl of fruit.

“Oh, Johnny…that’s so sweet.” You giggled at the collection on your tray. “Did HERBIE help?”

“No!” He gasped in offense. “I did all of this myself with the power of love, y/n.” Johnny kissed you on the cheek. “Now eat up, we’ve got to start the day.” HERBIE soon rushed in with a spoon, beeping in all sorts of tones. “Herbert to the rescue! Thanks, bud.”

“Are you sure he didn’t help you just a little?” You gladly took the utensil, glad you wouldn’t be eating cereal with your hands, and winked.

“Okay, he helped cut the fruit—but that’s it!”

I know that it is kind of normalized to ignore playing children screaming, because children love to scream when they're playing. But also, if you're a parent, please talk to your kids about screaming while playing, and at least look to make sure it's playing. Yes every time.

Today while we were out at the lake with my dad's family, a family across the little bay had a bunch of screaming kids playing in the water. And then it wasn't playing anymore, when a police boat went zipping by yelling at other boats to get out of his damn way, and ambulances started wailing in the distance, and one of the ladies in my family came outside to have everyone there do a headcount on their kids because she saw the family pulling a small, unmoving body out of the water. And there was almost certainly a delay between the screaming and the finding- no one on our side of the inlet paid attention to the screaming when it happened, because, well, kids often scream when they are playing.

Anyway, hug your kids in the morning. And CHECK on them when you hear screaming even if you're pretty sure it's just them playing. You do NOT want to be looking back at the one time you didn't and wishing you had.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
