One time before a drama performance some guy in my class randomly pointed out “Theres a thing on your arm.” (my Libre) Ok? And what do you want me to do about that? I just said “Yep!” and moved on because that wasn’t even a real question... people are weird.
Anyways because my last post mentioning type 1 diabetes took off a bit, I’ve decided to make the content I wish to see. A lot of people know not to be weird about someone’s mobility aid- newsflash, the same goes for someone’s insulin pump or CGM (continuous glucose monitor). Don’t point it out, don’t be a freak, if you really want to know you can politely ask someone if it’s a pump or monitor- none of this awkward “what is that? Can you take it off? Is it inside you? *disgusted needle phobia noises*”. Same goes for someone giving insulin from a syringe or testing their sugars with a finger prick. I get it, a lot of people don’t like needles. If it really, truly is getting to you that much, politely ask if you can look away. Do NOT ask someone to go do it somewhere else- you have no idea if they’re giving an emergency injection. If someone says the NEED a bag of candy for their blood sugars, do not ask them if you can still eat some.
TLDR: this shit either costs a lot of money or could be very medically necessary and is not for funsies. Treat it as you would any other signifigant aid

Hey, unpopular opinion, apparently. But people don’t just “have pain for no reason” doctors say this all the time (especially to women and chronically ill people) and the truth is, Thats literally not possible. Even if your pains are psychosomatic (a word I hesitate to even use because of the way its used so often) there is a reason you are having those pains whether its mental illness, abuse, etc. If your doctor consistently tells you that “well some people just have pain for no reason” get a new doctor. That’s a doctor who is not going to give a shit what your actual symptoms or experiences are.

So, how has this pandemic been a unique hell for disabled people? Let’s see..
“DON’T WORRY, IT’S ONLY PEOPLE W/ UNDERLYING CONDITIONS WHO ARE DYING!”
“SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST!”
“NATURAL SELECTION!”
“IMMUNE-COMPROMISED/CHRONICALLY ILL PEOPLE SHOULD JUST SELF-QUARANTINE INDEFINITELY WHILE THE REST OF US LIVE OUR LIVES!”
OR THE FACT THAT WHEN ABLE-BODIED PEOPLE HAVE TO STAY HOME, IT’S “OMG SOOO HARD” BUT WHEN DISABLED PEOPLE HAVE TO IT’S “OMG UR SOOO LUCKY I WISH I WAS IN BED TOO LOL”
OR THE FACT THAT SOME INSURANCE COMPANIES WAIVED MEDICAL BILLS FOR COVID-19 CARE, BUT NOT MEDICAL BILLS FOR ROUTINE CARE FOR CHRONICALLY ILL PEOPLE
OR THE FACT THAT LUPUS & RA PATIENTS WHO RELY ON HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE FOR EVERYDAY LIFE & SURVIVAL WERE SUDDENLY NOT ABLE TO GET THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS FILLED BECAUSE “OTHER PEOPLE NEED THESE PILLS MORE” (FOR OFF-LABEL USE W/ UNPROVEN—& THEN DISPROVEN—EFFICACY)
OR THE FACT THAT DISABLED PEOPLE IN THE UK—INCLUDING MINORS—RECEIVED LETTERS URGING THEM TO SIGN DNR (DO NOT RESUSCITATE) FORMS SO THAT THEY WOULDN’T USE UP RESOURCES IF THEY HAD A HEALTH EMERGENCY
OR THE FACT THAT COVID-19 PATIENTS IN THE US CAN BE DENIED CARE BASED ON PERCEIVED QUALITY OF LIFE & FUTURE NEED OF RESOURCES (GOING BEYOND SURVIVABILITY-INFORMED TRIAGE & ENTERING THE REALM OF CAPITALISM-INFORMED EUGENICS)
OR, OR, OR. THE LIST GOES ON, & IS ONLY GETTING LONGER.
The past several months have been riddled w/ an amplification of the messages that disabled people are already used to; claims that we are less useful, less valuable, & less human than able-bodied people.
&, that our struggles only matter when they are suddenly shared by the majority…& even then, they still don’t matter as much.

Ok but did anyone else notice this when they watched sex education?

Main boy, blue eyes, dark hair, both have problems with getting an erection at one point, emotional cheating.

Main girl, brown hair, brown eyes, angular features, mysterious and misunderstood, rebellious, all boys are in love with her, must chose.

Quirky friend, blonde hair, buck teeth, storylines are more focussed on their relationships than their obvious trauma and mental health.

(This is a bonus one, and not as similar, but they’re both called Anwar and their main storylines are about their internalised and externalised homophobic tendencies)
Is it coincidental??

I was talking to my mom the other day, and she said she was going to start going to the gym, because its important care for your body. I’m disabled w/ multiple chronic illnesses, so going to the gym is impossible for me. She seemed to realize this, and started to backtrack, saying like - its part of taking care of herself, and I interrupted and said, “Its okay mom. You and I taking care of ourselves look very different”. And thats what I would like you to know.
Taking care of yourself looks different.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like fruit smoothies and gym visits, cutting out sugar and weight training.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like hospital visits, feeding tubes and ports. Needles and tests.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like taking medication and lying down in a cool dark room.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like getting any calories in their body that they can.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like adding in more vegetables and trying to go outside to get sun more often.
For some people, taking care of themselves looks like seeing a therapist, keeping symptom journals, and practicing mindfulness, meds, or grounding techniques.
We all have different needs. Please don’t feel bad about how you care for yourself just because someone else is able to do “more”, or their care is more performative or obvious. Please don’t look down on someone for caring for themselves in a way that you do not. Medication and rest are just as important as exercise and vegetables.
Keep doing your best to care for yourself, the best way you know how. Your self care and health is important, no matter what it looks like.

Other examples include Howard in Fresh Meat, and in the very first episode Will from the Inbetweeners.
Ngl, I’m getting entirely sick of TV shows/films introducing an autistic or autistic-coded character and the entire point is so that the main character can hate them for being autistic, then realise how wrong they were, and then they finally become friends.
Like, I don’t think it comes from a place of malice. I’d even go as far as to guess that there are some autistic writers behind it, who just really want to impart to people (especially kids/teens) that they should really give autistic people a chance. Especially when there’s evidence to say that the most helpful thing you can do for autistic people is educate the people around them, not try to teach the autistic person neurotypical social skills.
But, like, it’s incredibly jarring as an autistic person to be put into the framing of the neurotypical protagonist, while the narrative essentially says “yes, it’s totally understandable that you find this person annoying and frustrating” for the first part of the arc.
I wouldn’t mind as much if we had more representation that didn’t do this, but it’s how the majority of narratives on TV/in film about autistic people work.
Also, there are kinder ways to do this narrative. Like, the longer you draw out the protagonist hating the autistic character, the worse it is. And the meaner you have the be, the worse it is as well. Like, I’m not saying that the shear number of examples doesn’t grate on its own, but I hate this less in, like, media where the protagonist is either trying to get along with the autistic character, or if they’re not, they’re not being actively mean behind their backs. Like, you can still do this narrative with someone going from mildly tolerating an autistic person to actually being their friend, and it won’t sting as much.

Before people come at me saying I’m racist because it’s fine to meet up for VE day and gather on beaches, but not ok to protest: NO. None of those things are ok because they’re all mass gatherings. Whilst protesting at least has a good reason behind it, it’s still breaching lockdown rules and will spread the coronavirus, causing further loss of life. The protests are about police brutality and preventing loss of life, but by gathering in large crowds you may be inadvertently causing it if you’re an asymptomatic carrier of coronavirus and spread it to the people at the protest. And although many protest organisers have told people to social distance and wear masks, there will always be people who don’t follow the rules. I’ve seen photos and videos of these protests in the UK, and none of them have shown people social distancing - they’re all close together in large crowds. While I can see why people are protesting in the US (despite it being incredibly dangerous due to the police presence there), a country which really has given up on trying to contain the virus, the UK is coming out of lockdown and may be returning to normality soon. I agree that the government shouldn’t be opening schools this early, people shouldn’t be meeting up in large crowds whatever the reason, and a few more weeks of conplete lockdown would be more likely to prevent a second wave.
I am aware that police brutality is a problem in the UK, and have signed countless petitions regarding it, and other incidents of racism over here, but objectively speaking: it’s worse in the US. You can’t argue that it’s on a whole other level in America. Yes, there are still many incidents where the police have used excessive force against BAME people compared to white people, and cases like the killing of Mark Duggan amongst others unfortunately exist, but in the UK you are unlikely to find that reckless, senseless approach to policing that exists in America where possession of anything from a phone to a water bottle can be “mistaken” for a gun, causing corrupt officers to shoot innocent black people, rarely with any consequences. There were only 27 days where police officers didn’t kill anyone in America last year. Can you say the same about the UK?
We can show our solidarity in other ways: signing petitions, donating to important causes, spreading awareness on social media, educating ourselves about racism and the police system, unlearning any prejudice within ourselves, and listening to and amplifying the voices of black people without speaking over them. We do not need to set our country back further in a global pandemic.
I’m angry, and it’s like Giselle in Enchanted when she ends up happy because she recognises for the first time in her life that she feels angry.
It isn’t my first time, but it might be the third I’ve been able to spot for over a decade.
but yes
I am angry.
Protests matter
But so do the lives lost because people are forgetting about the current crisis. This post is about the UK, to be clear. We were on the verge of making a good(ish) choice, and now suddenly there are minor lifts on the lockdown subsequently followed by mass gatherings.
Mass gatherings help breed viruses.
So
Well done.
Well done for forgetting!
Well done for putting all of the BAME people at risk who are already disproportionately affected by the virus.
Well done for forgetting about the sick and disabled (BAME or otherwise - they’re always forgotten).
Well done for forgetting about the NHS workers (idk the figures, but I have good reason to believe there are many BAME workers in various hospital roles. the workers who have been risking their lives for the past few months deserve better than this).
disclosure: the well done is sarcastic.
I am angry, because this is both wrong and counterproductive.

just thought i’d share a few of the less common music, shows and books i like, to try and make some friends with similar interests:
-stereophonics (fave albums are YGGTTCB and LSVO but like pretty much all their music)
-fresh meat (tv show about uni students on channel 4, i’m not a cavewoman)
-timewasters (tv show about a jazz quartet that time travel back to the 1920s)
-some girls (tv show on bbc three, the only place you can access it now is dailymotion)
-a good girl’s guide to murder & good girl bad blood (thriller/mystery books ya by holly jackson) don’t let the ya part put you off they’re really well plotted
-running girl & kid got shot (thriller/mystery ya books by simon mason)
-screenwriting for tv (strange hobby which will hopefully become my job?)
obviously there are more mainstream things i like but i can just search them up and find hundreds of people who like the same things.

Autistic Tip #5
Executive dysfunction can make it feel impossible to be productive, even when you need to be. Especially during the pandemic, when we’re stuck at home without our usual routine, this is a big issue. Here’s some things that help me work through my executive dysfunction:
Note: These tips might not work for you! If you don’t feel comfortable doing some of these things, don’t feel pressured to! I have memory issues along with my autism so I need a highly structured life to be productive. You may not need as much structure as me!
Write down events and to dos.
Having everything you need to do written down takes a lot of burden off you mind and helps you feel less stressed. It also helps with memory issues if you have them.
Checking tasks and events off of lists and calendars help with a passive sense of accomplishment, which can make it easier to be productive.
Always looks at the amount of things you did throughout the day. You do much more than you think you do!
Suggested methods:
1) Write events down on a calendar.
Write everything you need to do on a calendar. Meetings, classes, family events, work, etc. You want to have this information in multiple places. For example, I use my phone’s calendar, which is synced to my laptop’s calendar. I also have a sticker on my wall that’s a weekly calendar, so I can focus on the things I need to do for the week!
Check off events as they pass and look at all the functions you attended! Be proud of yourself for not missing things!
2) Have a daily and weekly to do list.
These are lists of things you have to do every day and every week. This will mostly consist of chores, self care, pet care, and meals. It’s your choice what is a daily thing and what is a weekly thing. Put absolutely everything down, no matter how small!
It’s a good idea to hang these lists somewhere you can easily see them. As you do the tasks on the lists, you can check them off (I use sticky notes so I don’t ruin the list, since mine is paper.) You can use a whiteboard for this if you want!
As you check things off, you’ll notice just how much you actually get done and how fast you do it! That alone can make it easier to keep doing tasks so you can see that list filled up with checks! You can even reward yourself once your daily to do is done!
3) Make another daily to do list.
Alright, this one is different from #2. This list is a list of electives to do in a day.
I use this mostly for my college assignments. I pick 3-5 assignments (usually small ones) to do that day, but are not due that day. (I try to stay ahead so I can keep my lists as electives, since close due dates can make executive function worse.) Make sure to make this list the day that you’ll be doing the tasks. Planning in advance can make it harder to actually do them. You want to catch your own brain off guard here!
Again, as you complete things, check them off! The point of this list is to feel super good! You’re doing things ahead of time! Look at how productive that is!
Alternate between work and fun
Moving between something fun and something not so fun can help you get things done without getting bored or side tracked!
Doing something you enjoy right after doing work is rewarding!
Suggested methods:
1) Listen to/Watch a video while you work.
This is best for when you’re doing tasks that don’t require too much thinking, like chores or cooking. You can watch a YouTube video, watch TV, listen to a podcast, or something else while you do the things you need to get done.
This makes it 100x easier for me to do chores! Yeah, I might be folding laundry, which is long and boring, but I’m also watching an episode of my favorite show! Or a video on my current special interest! As far as my brain is concerned, I’m relaxing, not working.
2) Work, Relax, Repeat.
For things that require more thought, you can use this method. Pick an item on your to do list and do it. Or, if it’s too long for you to bring yourself to do, do a part of it. Need to type a paper but you can’t even get out of bed? Just move to your desk or grab your laptop and move on to the next step.
Now, pick something you enjoy doing, but be conscious of what it is. Don’t pick something you can easily get stuck on, like reading or social media. Pick something that has clear start and end points, like one battle in pokemon, or one episode of a show.
Then, go and do another task. After that, do something else you enjoy. And repeat again and again until you’re done for the day! This switching can get time consuming, but it’s so much better than not being able to do anything at all!
Know when to take a break
Take as many breaks during the day as you need to! Take an entire day off to relax if you feel you need it! Don’t burn yourself out by trying to brute force through everything. In the long run, this will make it harder for you to be productive.
Be mindful of health conditions
This section may seem counter productive, but these tips are meant to help long term.
If you have a condition that makes you feel unwell or causes you pain, addressing that condition will make it easier to be productive.
Suggestions:
1) If you feel unwell, lower your work load
Regardless of how busy you are, if you feel sick, don’t push yourself! Listen to your body. If it’s telling you you’re done for the day, you’re done. It’s not the end of the world if you miss something for your health. And don’t feel guilty about it either. Your well being is more important than a chore or assignment.
2) If you’re physically incapable of something, don’t try to do it
I’ll use myself as an example for this one. I have double-jointed wrists that get strained easily, so I can’t type a lot despite being a college student. So, I can only spend so much time on assignments in a day.
The first week of quarantine, I worked on my laptop twice as much as usual (among other things) and I got an overuse injury. I couldn’t even use my phone, much less my laptop for four (4) days. That was a lot of missed time.
TLDR: you might think you’re being more productive short term by pushing your limits, but in a few days there’ll be consequences. Please don’t hurt yourself.
Anyone with executive dysfunction can reblog!
