Guilt-tripping RP Partners - Don’t Do It

Things we’ve all heard before. Don’t be this person.

“You hate me.”

This isn’t okay. This is honestly one of the most manipulative, guilt-trippy things out there. It doesn’t matter what the context is. Don’t do it.

“But they’re rping with with other people instead.”

So? Don’t be possessive of your RP partners. They can RP with others and so can you. They aren’t an object. They are a person and they can choose to RP with anyone they wish to. It’s not a reflection of their feelings about you. It’s just them having fun.

“But they aren’t talking to me anymore either. They dumped me for someone else.”

If this is really true then you have a right to be upset but you still don’t have a right to guilt-trip the person. For a few reasons:

1. It’s still their choice who they RP with. People move on sometimes. Perhaps the RP with you wasn’t what they wanted and they found what they want elsewhere. Maybe things between your muses just wasn’t clicking how they wanted. Maybe things weren’t clicking on an OOC level. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter. It’s their RP, their muse, their time to spend how they want.

2. Guilt-tripping is not the way to ever get them to RP with you again. Obviously, they moved one for some reason. Maybe it was personal and maybe not. but being this way won’t help matters. All you’ve done is reinforce to them that they made the right call.

3. While you may feel the need to let the person know that they hurt your feelings, this isn’t the way to express that. Most of the time, it’s better to simply let these things go. They’ve moved on, so should you. 

But in the case you wish to express to someone that they hurt your feelings for moving on from you, the better thing to say would be along these lines:

“I’m disappointed that we don’t RP together anymore. I miss it. If you ever want to pick it back up again, please let me know.”

As Hook began to speak about how his commission be the sole focus Leonardo knew that the pirate would want to steal him away. As calm as the artist tried to be his eyes revealed a bit of fear and panic. “I can’t just leave and abandon all my other work.” Leo spoke as he gazed to the pirate, this time looking over Hook he was looking for weapons. The hook and sword were obvious, two flintlocks under the coat and a long dagger tucked in his belt.

As coolly and calm the pirate was, it was clear that he wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Leo was going with him one way or another, it was simply a choice of whether he would go willingly or kicking and screaming as he was dragged out. The artist had been in tight spots before, he’d find a way back before the pirate decided his usefulness had run out.

“I suppose you’re right, with such a commission it deserves my full focus.” Leo said reluctantly with a soft sigh. “But would you grant me a day to pack my supplies and send word to a friend to look after my workshop while I’m away? This isn’t just where I work, it’s my home. I want to make sure it’ll be safe.” The artist requested. 

Hook listened in mock concern at Leonardo’s arguments, tsking and shaking his head as if considering the conundrum alongside him. It was common courtesy, after all, to extend -if only- the illusion of empathy with his artist’s worries. Hook was still gentleman enough to realize that. 

“Yes, a true pity for your other patrons,” he mused, glancing idly at some of the work displayed nearby him. “But surely masterpieces such as these take time. I would think, if one has paid so handsomely, one would understand the job is not one to be rushed. Besides, I will gladly match their patronage as a whole and throw in an extra percentage...just for all the trouble.”

As came as no surprise, the artist eventually conceded to Hook’s terms. He nodded in subtle approval. “One day would be most agreeable,” he allowed. Let it not be said he wasn’t charitable and understanding where and when it was warranted. “But no more. I won’t wait forever, dear- it is, after all, an awfully long time.” 

He said this last bit with a lingering, suggestive glance, that which promised riches and adventure beyond any innocent man’s wildest imaginings. 

“It would seem this is where I take my leave- if the gentleman is quite satisfied?”
