The Elizabeth Siddal gothic pre-Raphaelite poetry book (which is getting even more sumptuously made as their Kickstarter grows!) will also be the first chance to see some of my hand-drawn floral illustrations in print ~ like this preview of stylized poppies from my personal sketch book:

Yes, this. I finished up a big project the other week, took a small break, and then promptly started on something else. There are always things to write, which you have to figure out how to write—because each endeavor is (infuriatingly) different.

What do you do with the praise then?

You write the next thing.

A Soft Song

Love, this is all hands and tongue, and quiet torment— love, you aren’t that yet, but the idea perches in my heart, singing a soft song, one of want and comfort and wonder and wildness,

and all I want to do is extend a hand, and see what happens—

what might we conjure between heartbeats, the spark of curiosity alighting like stars in a perfect night sky,

what I want to say is that I know I’m unreasonable, but so what? Reason never leads anywhere near love, and isn’t that the whole point of life, lit like a lighthouse bright between bits of chaos?

Neither of us is new or perfect, or unscarred, but I don’t care— let me show you what I think matters, and how to find the word home in a kiss.

I'm reminded of a quote from Black Beauty. I have a lovely copy somewhere that my dad read to me when I was little.

“Do your best, And leave the rest, 'Twill all come right Some day or night.”

When I'm struggling or feeling overwhelmed, I remember that quote. There are so many things in life that are out of our control. It can be pretty frustrating. And overwhelming. And emotionally messy.

But the things we can control? How much heart we invest. Ordering and tidying what we can. Those things matter.

Love wildly -- and that means loving yourself too. XOXO

Hello, Mr. Gaiman.

What do you think of Netflix reapetedly cancelling actual good fantasy shows and mass produce another dumb pieces of garbage with poorly written characters and a weak plot without any message which either nobody watches or a bunch of people watch and conclude they're worthless anyway. They clearly don't care about fine cinematography. I wouldn't want that to happen to any of your shows, don't you fear it?

Not really. You make the best thing you can, hope it finds its audience, and keep going. Worry about things you can affect, not things you can't.

Seconding this. I had to pause in the middle of episode five, because of work. But I am in love with this show. It’s like Supernatural meets Buffy in the best way.

Esther the Witch from Dead Boy Detectives is my new obsession. She is hilarious and terrible and steals every scene.

Really fun, charming, weird show. Been watching it on a loop since this morning while I work.

I LOVE this movie! It is so good.

I finally watched The Old Guard and tumblr did not adequately prepare me for how funny the van kiss scene actually is. Like I've seen whole gif sets of Joe's impromptu love poem but that's not the half of it.

Dude are you sure you want to be making a homophobic jab at these people specifically

Joe: "Yeah he is and what about it, bitch boy" <- said with far more grace and eloquence

Nicky: "<3"

(This is where we give kudos to the actors for not smashing each other's teeth in when LAUNCHING at each other. Couldn't have been me)

Everyone is so taken aback they fully just watch for a whole second in, presumably, homophobic horror before all simultaneously deciding This Cannot Stand

you INTERRUPT joe and nicky? you interrupt their kiss like the football game? oh! oh! death for homophobes! death for homophobes for One Thousand Years!!!!

This isn't really part of the scene but "There's a TV, Joe!" is close enough that I'm going to add it. As an epilogue.

We’re an amalgam of everyone we ever loved. Stealing bits and pieces for ourselves: how he wrote his 7s, how she made tea, how they folded sweaters. Gathered bits and bobs, a pastiche of stars that have names we no longer say aloud.

But we are also empty spaces, waiting for a key to turn in a lock, making room. Hoping that someone might feel like home, without rearranging the furniture too much. Waiting for the light to stream through these same windows we’ve had for years. For the quiet to feel safe. For someone to start singing this new song.

Real talk, okay? I am sometimes genuinely, delightedly mystified when someone likes me. It's not because I don't realize my own worth. I do!

It's because I have been wildly undervalued and underappreciated in the past. And sometimes, that feeling sticks in your ribs. The bad things often howl loudly, especially if we're having a wobbly moment. And we all do, because human.

Brain weasels can be jerks. But the people who like/love you for who you are? They aren't shy about it. Even in quick little messages and small gestures. It doesn't have to be a constant thing, either. Just meaningful reminders.

I adore my people, out loud and without reservation. Because I know just how powerful that is. How often we don't hear the good things enough, and we should.

I often give ninja compliments to people I care about. Because I think investing in people is what matters most. So, if you're in my life, please know all this.

Listen it wasn’t the most baffling thing in the world when Netflix canceled Lockwood and co even tho it performed well bc let’s be real, Netflix will basically cancel a show if it breathes wrong…

But do you think that Netflix actually canceled Lockwood and co bc around the time it aired they’d aquired the rights to dead boy detectives (a show with a competingly similar premise to Lockwood and co that has Neil Gaiman attached who’s had two very successful shows in the last few years with Netflix and Amazon prime)… because I do.

Like to me that’s the missing puzzle piece of what happened there

Chewy has the best customer service I’ve ever encountered, staffed by kind people who have always been wonderful to speak to. Whenever I’ve had a problem, they’ve always helped me. Many times, I needed to ask for refund on something, and they always said yes—donate the item if I could.

Today, I can home to this beautiful portrait of my baby and a very sweet card of condolences. My heart is full.
