I've been watching Pokémon since it debuted on Kids' WB and although I can't say I remember every episode of every saga (that's... kinda a lot of episodes to keep track of... 😅), after watching ep. 71 of Pokémon Journeys, I can say with confidence Ash has never been this comfortable around any of his other friends (to the point where he doesn't just show his support/happiness in the form of words, but with personal contact as well).

The hand on the shoulder, arm around the shoulder, etc... Ash doesn't typically behave this way around his friends; at least not often. In this one episode alone, he touches Goh three times. Most people will say they're just really good friends and that two guys can have a close friendship without it being gay, and yes, that is 100% possible and true. All I'm saying is don't discount the possibility that there's something more going on here because that's also possible.

The only other character in the anime that Ash appeared comfortable with semi-frequent personal contact was Dawn with the high fives, and that number is still small compared to the number of times Ash and Goh have touched, be it the more casual kind (fist bumps, high fives) or the closer, more potentially intimate kind (hand on shoulder, arm around shoulder, that one time they hugged and didn't let go right away). And of course, Ash wasn't uncomfortable/unwilling to hold Goh's hand in the Gulpin episode where Goh couldn't see.

It's not just the touching though; there's something else about Ash and Goh's relationship that is different from the relationships Ash has had in the past.

Ash has cheered on his friends and supported them in their endeavors before, but has he ever actively helped one of his friends in achieving that goal? The closest comparison I can personally think of is the one or two times he helped one of the girls with training - either for the battle portion of an upcoming contest or the performance part itself, but I can't recall it being that frequent.

Ash not only is fully committed to helping Goh become a member of Project Mew (thus sacrificing time he could be using to train for the PWC or seek out other competing trainers so that he can increase his rank), he's also been shown on, more than one occasion, to accompany (and help) Goh when setting out to catch Pokémon (again, something that ties into his dream to one day catch Mew).

Is it just me or does Ash seem (maybe more often than not?) focused more on helping Goh achieve his dream rather than his own? I can't think of any other friend or traveling companion (male or female) with a dream/goal that Ash has devoted as much of his time/energy/interest in as he does with Goh's. Maybe it's because Goh's dream is more in line with Ash's enthusiasm for Pokémon, or maybe there's more to it than that.

Lastly, how often did Ash ever just casually hang out with his previous friends like he does with Goh? How often do we see the two just walking around/spending time together (usually eating 😂)/looking for stuff to do? Doesn't Ash seem a lot more relaxed/carefree in Journeys (even more so than in Sun and Moon?), almost as if he's discovered there's more to life than Pokémon and battling, like enjoying the company of someone that he likes very much. 😉💕

The only Pokemon series I've seen are XY/XYZ and Indigo, and neither of those have I finished. But you already have me covered on Serena, so

I'll just say the only moment in indigo that stands out to me, of Ash being caught off guard like this, is when he saw Misty the night of the Spring Festival.

I haven't seen that episode in a while, so I don't remember all the details. But Ash's usual reaction to Misty, especially when Misty is actually trying to dress up/look good for some kind of event, is to make fun of her.

Now I'm not going to get into the discussion of what Ash's teasing "really meant" back then. The "concrete detail" we DO have here is that he saw Misty, the show put a typical glittery filter over her, and that Ash was just—speechless. He's just frozen, looking at her, [and she even has to ask (I think) if there's something wrong, or something along those lines.][Edit: she does not ask if something is wrong, she asks him to dance.]

Then Misty kind of snaps Ash out of it by getting him to join in the festivities [dance], and the end of the episode plays out with everyone partying.

The reason this sticks out in my mind, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because it's relatively early in the series, or because I happen to like that episode a lot and have seen it several times. But an important detail to me, especially when comparing to Goh, is that Misty at that point was a character Ash spent a lot of time with, given she was his traveling "buddy" (I use quotes because they really did bicker a lot lmao). Because of this, we also are familiar with their well-established dynamic. So seeing Ash react to Misty in that way was like a real 180 from how he usually reacts/interacts with her.

Also, I'm not trying to say Ash and Misty were enemies or hated each other or something. They were clearly friends, which was especially evident in this episode. I'm just saying their usual dynamic didn't often veer in this direction.

Anyway, that's the only specific example I can recall off the top of my head. I didn't include the few other times Ash has shown attraction to characters bc they don't parallel the moment between Ash and Goh that we were originally analyzing a million paragraphs ago, whereas the Spring Festival moment with Misty does imo.

I'm only active in like one ship/fandom rn and I also notice this. Like you don't have to ship something, but you also don't have to "anti-ship" it, yeah? Like if you wanna purposefully ignore something or intentionally misinterpret something, go ahead, but at some point you gotta get with the times lmao.

Ash and Goh imo are still a somewhat subtle ship/pairing that's open to interpretation. I'm just not a fan of the double standard where if you replaced any one character in a same-sex pairing with a character of the "opposite sex", people would IMMEDIATELY think those two characters are meant to be interpreted as a romantic pairing.

In Ash and Goh's case, you already made the point really well. If Goh was a girl, everything Goh says and does, as well as everything Ash says and does about/for Goh would be seen as romantic, even if it wasn't intended that way.

Anyway, I probably made little sense, but I also wanted to vent/rant a little about the pesky status quo 🤷🏽‍♀️

And as much as we have to respect other people's opinions, we really have to ask ourselves: are they blind? Or foolishly disregarding what's already on the screen? Let's be honest: if people saw a girl instead of Gou, they would all go it's a crush! It's canon! It's loveee!! So why can't they just accept the possibility that it's the same here? I constantly try to escape reality and find a place free of homophobia, but these little things are just a slap in the face. Though comments like these aren't exactly homophobic, the ignorance of non-het related stuff is just cruel. Journeyshipping is WAYYY too obvious at this point, yet I'm gonna bet there are still too many people who see Ash with one of the Alola girls which, let's be honest, is barely even supported by evidence from the official franchise. It's just sad and frustrating to see how blind people can be.

Okay... *slowly exhales* I'm sorry if you read my rant. I'm guessing we all want a happier place, after all. These things just tick me off sometimes... But anyway, here's a satogou shot 🙃:
