On this day, 6 January 1945, four women were hanged in the Auschwitz concentration camp for their role in a prisoner rebellion the previous October. Ala Gertner (pictured) stole gunpowder from the munitions factory where she was an enslaved labourer which she passed to underground resistance member Roza Robota who got it to Soviet Jewish detainees who built bombs for the rebellion. Estusia Wajcblum and Regina Safirsztajn were also involved and executed. Hanged publicly in front of the other women prisoners, from the gallows Robota appealed to them: “Be strong and be brave”. On this day, 6 January 2014, workers at the Goodyear plant in Amiens, France, took two senior managers hostage when the plant faced closure, demanding better severance pay. Over 100 workers occupied the plant and barricaded managers inside for 30 hours, until the company agreed to triple the proposed redundancy pay from an original offer averaging €20,000 per employee. The History We’ve Been Through

How can we mind the memory of the martyred ghetto Jew?

We turned our back on everything that brought our people through.

Our fighters are no longer the ragged partisan crew. 

The actions of the soldiers of today give me some troubling Deja Vu,

for Fascism is Fascism even if the flag is new,

and we replace the jagged Swastika with the star of David in Blue.

The barbed wire is the same, just from a different point of view.

The ghettos are the same, but our perspective has been skewed.

Jerusalem looks like Warsaw in 1942.

The hatred is the same, whether it’s spoken in German or Hebrew.

You must look past the propaganda and lies that they spew.

Look to the crying child in the ruins that the bombs blew.

Personally, it reminds me of the beaten ghetto Jews,

and how that memory has long been misconstrued

to justify all the destruction and warcrimes that today's soldiers do.

An end to the killing is long overdue,

and that we stop repeating history that we have already been through.
