I’ve read quite a few other ‘mafia romance’ books and I am happy to report aftg is just…. better? I’m every way. I know we often say how insane the plot is and there’s some criticism about some inconsistencies and outlandish situations but compared to other books on the market in the same genre aftg is actually a fully fleshed out world with an incredible, detailed plot and some of the best character work I’ve ever seen.

In aftg, the mafia part is actually a real plot line with real danger and the it has the most interesting hierarchy and dynamics that service the story in EVERY WAY. These books don’t just use a mafia backdrop to create cheap ‘bad boys’, which is my huge critique of most every mafia book on the market.

The intersection of mafia and sports, especially the sport Nora literally invented so that both women and men can play and be in the story, adds a fun and unique twist to the genre. There are NO OTHER books that remotely compare in terms of character, plot and world building.

The danger feels real, the trauma is gut wrenching, the growth and resolution feels earned. The love story should be in its own separate category of romance because it runs laps around any other romance I’ve ever read.

All this to say, even years after its release, aftg is still the most unique and interesting mafia book existing in the market today.
