Lilith and Theo! (and Clara, the bug creature)

I’m going to be bouncing around my original characters, just so I don’t introduce only one story at a time. For reference, these are the three characters I’ll be introducing today!

I made these characters originally for a final in one of my classes. But like I usually do when I make new characters, I got very attached to all of them and the sort of a plot I had made up at the time. After that semester, I took a Writing YA fiction class, where I pitched this story and laid it out from start to finish. Whilst considering posting this on something like Ao3, I really got to build personalities for all of them and some other characters I may design one day.

The brief for this story is that Lilith and Theo are orphans in the late 1800s. As the older sibling, Lilith is very protective of her brother and wants to keep them both together until she is old enough to take care of both of them. But one day, she is told that they will be given to separate families due to the overcrowding of the orphanage. She decides to run away with Theo, however they are caught by the groundskeeper who chases them into the forest and the siblings hide in an abandoned (and supposedly haunted) manor. While hiding, Theo runs off further into the building with Lilith closely behind. That is when they find the creature who lives in the home, an 8-foot bug monster mashup of a moth and a spider. Most frighting of all: they could understand what she was saying.

The bug creature is Clara, who was cursed into her monster form by a vengeful witch that slaughtered her family and cursed whoever survived into these creatures. In exchange for staying in the manor, Lilith and Theo agree to help her find a way to undo the curse.

The way the story unravels after is still somewhat under construction but I do have a general idea for how this story ends. But I really do adore these characters and their personalities.

Lilith is an anxious, but determined girl who will do anything to keep her and her brother safe. Theo is a bright and curious little boy, but very naive. Clara is someone who is used to getting what she likes and can be very rude, however she grows a bit of a soft spot for the two kids. I am also a big sucker for found families so theres that too haha :D

I hope to continue the story one day, cause I had a lot of fun doing for my class. I think doing it as my hobby would be a neat idea too. I'll be sure to post any additional artwork of them too!

Finals soon….

Hello there again! I’m about to be in the midst of my finals for college and before I drown in stress, tears and blue light screens, I though I’d let y’all know what’s to come and what I’ll be showing soon!

First off, I have four studio classes (as mentioned in my previous blog post) and that means four studio finals which means I will die as soon as I hand in the last one. Who knows what’ll happen to my one liberal arts class final because I have too many other things to be working on. But this also means more content for my portfolio and social medias! Feel free to follow me on any of them, I have a Tiktok and Instagram that I’m pretty active on :)

As for this tumblr blog, I mentioned that I made this specifically for a class but I do really enjoy yapping about whatever I want so I may or may not keep up with this site too! I hope for may, as I love talking about my OCs and seeing all the fanart on here too! I also like talking about my art process cause I believe that part doesn’t get shown a whole lot and I like explaining how my process goes. But, after finals, we’ll have to see if I still feel the same.

Making my character move, using After Effects!

This semester, I'm taking a class called Motion for Illustration, where we're learning how to use Adobe After Effects, as well as how to animate illustrations/prepping illustrations for animation. I've never really done much with animation so this class sounded like a fun challenge and a useful skill to add to my resume. For our first assignment, we had to pitch an idea for an illustration, create it, make it move and then finally render it for the a class screening. I wanted to make this post to show my process and final result!

First, I had to create my pitch, which included a short about me section my inspiration and what I wanted to do for the actual animating part. I'll show the ideation part for my project here:

I had a drawing that was unfinished for a while and thought maybe some motion would make the story more clear! I included some thumbnails (quick doodles that show the concept), as well as a break down on what parts would be moving. This wasn't required, but I also showed some ideas for color palettes, as I hadn't colored the illustration yet :>

After I got approval for my idea, I colored my drawing in Procreate and exported it out to Photoshop. In Photoshop, I did the final rendering and more importantly, separated the parts I wanted to move into individual layers. This was the most time consuming part, as you have to think about what parts that will be exposed while the illustration is moving and specifically what parts needed to be separated so it moves fluidly.

After finishing that up, I saved the file and imported it into After Effects. Since I had already planned out what parts I wanted to move, I used the puppet tool mostly to move the joints back and forth. Besides that, I also added some falling particle effects to add sparkles and moved the hand crank on the music box, making it a 3D object within After Effects and following a tutorial that my professor linked for me to make it move seamlessly. I'll share the link here:

I also wanted to add music to my animation which turned out to be a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. I found an audio clip that was the right length for my animation, using a website called Freesound.org, linked by my college's website. I imported it into After Effects as an .mp3, as an .mp4 will not give you any sound. Then, as I was rendering it out, each time there would be no sound. I ended up using Premiere Pro to add the music in and it was all good to go!

Having four art studios a semester is hard?!? (pt.2)

Don’t be confused by the part two in the header, there’s no other post to search in order to get this one. It just means that I’ve done a four studio semester twice already, in my time at art school and I think I’ve finally learned my lesson this time. Ironically, they’ve both been in the spring semester so while everyone else gets to enjoy the bright sunshine and fresh air of the world awakening from its frozen slumber, the bright white light from the lab Wacom will be main source of light. At least, I'll be well air-conditioned.

Besides that, I've enjoyed most of my classes. Aside from being very informative, I'm using a whole bunch of programs I would've never touched, like Zbrush, Blender and After Effects. I can only really see myself using After Effects outside of class though, unless I want to cough up 20 dollars for Nomad Sculpt on my iPad. 3D modeling just seems like a hobby I want to add to my roster. Just one other way I can recreate my OCs and put them into yet another program (and maybe make them real?!)

Mara!! (the beginning of it all)

I wanted to make this post and what will probably be a much longer series, dedicated to my original characters. And what a better place to start out with than with the one that started it all. My very first and oldest OC, Mara!

This drawing of her is a few months old now, but I’ve refrained from drawing her since, after my sophomore assessment I had to do around this time last year, encouraged me to draw other characters rather than reusing the same ones over and over again. Thus Mara went on a bit of a hiatus after I finished this drawing. I focused on my other OCs, some that definitely needed a redesign and also exploring the story of a set of characters in my Writing YA Fiction class. That could be an entirely different post on its own though.

And, for kicks, I'll show what she looked like the very first time I drew her:

Yeah, it sure is a drawing. I think this is from around late 2019/early 2020 so I'm very happy to see my improvement! :D

As for Mara's origin, she was originally inspired by Vivziepop's Hazbin Hotel pilot (its a whole show now that I have not and will not watch) and was meant to be part of a rehabilitation for teen demons, that's basically high school 2.0. I'm pulling this from the old notes I made for her story, that I wrote around the time I drew this. Her earring in this image is also inspired by the one Tanjiro wears in Demon Slayer (except without the rising sun imagery) as my interest in anime was just beginning. She also doesn't have any pointy ears, because I frequently forgot to draw them on. Now I can't draw her without them.

Her story has changed a ton, from being an angsty demon teen who thristed for blood to being an undead entity, who has no recollection of her past and goes on a journey to puzzle together her memories, re-meet people from her past and deciding whether the actions she made in her past life will continue to define her current one. It's a bit of a sappy change but the character as whole (suprising nobody) is a reflection of myself, or at least my high school self who was dealing with the pandemic, a toxic friendship and an identity crisis, scrambling to figure out what the heck I was going to do after high school (it was art school lol).

For now though, Mara has been my go to character if I want to quickly doodle something or practice some new dynamic poses. I doubt she'll ever fully get a cohesive story, but hey, a girl can dream.

Miscellanous Fun Facts:

-Mara is always slightly older than me (ex: when I was 16, she was 18)

-She’s pansexual and uses she/her pronouns

-Her favorite cake types are Funfetti and Trés Leches

-She is not a natural blonde! It’s for a lore reason now (that kinda makes no sense) but also because she used to be white and now shes not

-Absolutely adores butterflies!!

-She will only wear skirts (with shorts under them) and refuses any other kind of bottoms

-Mara has a magical weapon (origin of weapon unknown) that turns into a variety of weapons, which she will only be able to summon as she grows stronger and more combat savvy (only close combat weapons, range defense for her is achieved through magic which she is not very strong at yet)

An Introduction (and why the heck I’ve never used tumblr?!)

Hi everyone, my name is Anri and this is my very first on tumblr! I have a little meet the artist image on here too to get know me a bit better (in terms of interests and such) and just to try and figure out how this space works. I’m currently a junior attending Columbus College of Art and Design as an Illustration major! I have many original characters brewing in the cauldron that is my mind and would love to share to world :D

Going on to why I’ve never used Tumblr before, despite having used every other interconnecting app/website like Wattpad, Ao3 and even Amino (anyone remember that platform?) is very simple really: I was scared. Learning a whole new platform and getting adjusted to all the settings, buttons, doodads and thingamabobs was all too much for me. This also being the reason why it took me until my senior year of high school to finally make a twitter account (big mistake, I’m addicted now). But when a class assignment makes you have a blog account for a semester (and you forgot about it till now), that’s enough of an excuse to make one now. The upside of this is now I don’t have to clear out any 13 year old blog posts :,)
