Throwback Thursday with apawfive. When Cross came to us, he was very weak physically, but emotionally more so. He was abandoned when he was eight years old! That's quite old for a dog. Before we brought him home, he had already spent about six months in fear, stress, confusion and loss. There was trauma clearly, and aggression. There were just too many trigger points. Initially, for the first few days, we even had to give him food from a distance. I was bitten within the first two weeks. But what we observed was he was apologetic about it. Considering his past, he may have not accepted us as his family so soon, due to the fear and uncertainty, but he did regret his actions. It was heartbreaking to see him like that. But we learned to be more patient with him. Gradually, things started getting better. He was happy. To have a family. To have two loving sisters - Mishka and Tallulah. This photo was clicked about a year later. And it speaks of how much he had started to trust us and love us. ❤️ And today, he loves to snuggle with us, play with us and be a demanding baby, asking for our time and attention. We were lucky that we were trusted with him. But as it is with our adoptions, it still feels like he saved us just as much as we did him. [T] When we visited Benaras. Nishant and I have lost a lot in the past few years. Kids we loved immensely. Kids we tried to save. Sometimes we were too late, sometimes we were wrong. And sometimes it wasn't really in our hands. Some losses have been really really tough. I have cried over them again and again, and still my tears do not seem to have dried. Many people we know personally don't understand us. They can't process how we can grieve so much over dogs, stray dogs no less. And we don't blame them. We can't expect them to understand this. What we can do is continue to love and keep trying to improve. These pictures are from our trip to Benaras in 2019. We made this trip for 'Asthi Visarjan' (immersion of ashes post cremation) for two of our beloved street babies, who fought a lot but were too young and too weak to do it anymore. They had painful deaths and we are still not over it. Spectra and Sugar - two souls that will live with us forever. Unfortunately, there are more names on this list. But we try to be strong. And we try to love more and regret less. I know it's not Throwback Thursday. But I was just going through these pictures and felt like sharing this with you all. Throwback Thursday with apawfive. I have always loved to cook but I used to dread baking! But like most of us, lockdown made me experiment more. Surprisingly, the cakes were very good. 😁 That gave me the confidence to try some healthy dog cakes. Some of you might know it already that we are quite particular about our dogs' diet and what all they can eat. So, I had to work with only healthier options. Like gluten-free flour instead of atta or maida. And obviously, no sugar or chocolates! Even tried non-veg cakes to make it more interesting for them. Here are some of the cakes I have made in past two years. 1. Red Velvet cake with potato frosting - my first attempt with dog cake. 2. Coconut and Blueberry cake with curd and shredded Coconut frosting 3. Buff and veggies cake with Curd frosting 4. The buff cake's slice 5. Buckwheat cake 6. Buckwheat and Coconut cake 7. [T] Evil Eye 🤔 Nishant and I are not superstitious but then we are humans after all, and sometimes end up believing in weird things. 🙈 In the past few months, our packwalkers (stray dogs) got a lot of compliments and comments from random people. Some said nice things and some not so nice. But the common point was how well these kids are being taken care of. But in the past few weeks, they have also suffered from minor/major incidents. You all know about Mangu's case but we haven't shared them all. But they have made me wonder if these kids had caught 'nazar' or 'evil eye'. 😢 This is Mommy, the oldest dog in King Angel's pack. We'll talk more about her in some other post but this one is about her sickness and recovery. Around the end of Dec 2021, Mommy had fallen sick a few days before Mangu's accident. While I was feeding the kids one morning, the local tailor bhaiya informed me that Mommy had been crying. She also limped occasionally. I tried to check her and she cried in pain when I tried to give her her favourite belly rubs. I called Nishant and we rushed to the vet. After an x-ray and some blood tests, we discovered that it was a blood infection. She had to be on medication for seven days. So while we were managing Mangu's treatment, we also had to take care of this girl; and to her credit, she didn't cause us any trouble. She is a sweetheart. She would let us feed her the medicines by hand, as if she knew it's for her own benefit. Actually, I think she did. Gradually, Mommy was back to her cute fun self. And the best moment was when she was able to run again without any pain. ❤️ So, do you believe in evil eye? Update on Mangu.

He's recovering well! :) Yesterday, we finally saw the last of his exposed bone get covered with scar tissue and muscle. It's closed! Hopefully, it won't be long before we're able to reunite him with his pack now! ❤️

[T] A special dog - Clara ❤️

There's a deep story behind these pictures. Apart from being a peaceful experience, Blaze has a ritual with us of doing his obedience training even with his daily meals. He's young and very food motivated, so it's a good way to keep him engaged. But if I have to call someone the smartest dog ever, it would be Clara. She's fiercely loyal, very emotive, and just highly engaged and intelligent. She's the only dog I know who learned by observation and not food or treats.

Today, as I gave Blaze his commands, Clara stopped eating and followed those very commands to perfection, when I wasn't even paying attention to her but Nishant noticed it. She stopped eating. 😲 It just goes to show how attentive she is to our intentions and needs. Blaze has a lot to learn from her in that regard. And the two of them only started eating again at "go"!

What a learning experience it is even for us to be around them. ❤️

The kind of Before - After stories we love the most. ❤️ This is Clara, with her father, Nishant. In the first picture, she's about a month old puppy. She had appeared out of nowhere and laid her trust in a stranger - Nishant. This is the first ever photo we have of Clara. These two have had a long and for me, the most heartwarming journey together. They didn't start off on the best note and Clara used to be scared of Nishant. But fast forward to today and she trusts him the most to keep her safe. :) If she senses danger (which is mostly Blaze being a typical annoying brother to her :p), she runs straight to her father. She knows she's safe in those arms. The same arms that held her when she was dropped at a strange location four years ago. [T] Even bad pictures can tell beautiful stories. :) The weather has been horrible the past few days. Rainy, windy, chilly! But as we always say that our stray dogs are the best. They teach us to survive the worst. So they deserved a little pampering. :) Their morning meal was served to them on their makeshift dining table.
