Agree with your Taxi Driver post. I think (hope) the second half of the drama will deal with how neither Do-ki's or Ha-na's methods work on their own. They need to work together because the Rainbow group may be brutal in the short term but quite forgiving in the long term. Meanwhile Ha-na has to find a way to pursue justice in a system that wants her to fail, and yet that system is also the most tangible form of justice they can get.
I was waiting for the drama to end to respond to this hahaha. But unfortunately, I didn't find any of them solved properly until the end.
The first writer (episode 1-10) seemed to like the established Rainbow Team. If I were to say it, I think the drama will have no 'actual' conflict (outside of each case's conflict) until the very end. It would be like most long-running American series with different case every episode. The drama will only focus on the eye-opening cases that people should look forward to, contemplate, and eventually empathize with the issue given. This is the essence of the drama that had been introduced and widely known (as well as received) to viewers.
The second writer (episode 11-end) seemingly wanted to add 'actual' conflict that involves every major cast member. But in doing so, they forgot the essence of the drama, that is to empathize with the issue.
Giving something like a kick to shake Do Ki, Ha Na, and President Jang's principle is a good idea, but the execution isn't delivered well. What seemed to be a mix of two principles (Rainbow's & Ha Na's) imo actually make sense, but the process to get there feels rushed. Therefore I can't feel the sincerity of the ending.
But, I also think 6 episodes aren't enough to build a strong core conflict and achieve a good resolution. So, if the first writer were to continue to write until the last episode, it would be hard to get a strong ending, too. Unless if the writer wanted to write American style hoho. I wouldn't mind more series like Criminal Minds (tvN, 2017) that solely focus on solving a different case in each episode.
Regardless, I enjoy this drama very much. The reconstruction of the cases, the so many perspectives given, the epilogues, the hidden tracks(so good!!!); all packed in a way viewers can relate and laugh-cry along easily and sympathize dearly. It is a must-watch if you want to see the reality of the world we live in.
I hope Taxi Driver not only end up in our must-watch, all-time best, or buzzworthy kdrama list but actually move humanity in everyone who watched it.

A Psychopath’s Son
The ending of Taxi Driver is here and while the change of writer made the plot isn't as smooth, I like the short minutes they explore, this time, not the victims and the bereaved, but the serial killer's family who’s actually the victim and the bereaved too.
Feeling empathy for a psychopath's family is something hard to do. The prejudice is "it is impossible not to know" when the known fact is: when someone do something bad that you never imagine, it doesn't mean he's not who he is in front of you, rather he has another life he doesn't want you to know. Another prejudice is "he will end up like his father who is a killer".
Being a family member of someone evil is something really hard to comprehend. Most serial killers have a happy family, and not all necessarily having family because they want to appear normal to others or have offspring who will continue their legacy (as Mouse did). Some love their families dearly while others abuse their own families daily.
Then when the hard truth revealed, the things left for the families were "How could you not know?", isolation, and mean things on the wall.
While the victim's family is grieving, there are also many things left to do for the killer's family: Pretend to be deaf, resisting humiliation, shrug off whispers, relocate if possible, change identity, start again like a newborn, all while self-questioning "how could I not know all this time?"
When the victim’s family try to live what’s left on them while secretly or publicly grieving and condemn the one who caused their pain, the killer’s family does the same. They try to start anew while regretting ever loving the one who caused others’ pain at the same time as they quietly longing for what would their family become if things aren’t twisted.
Tumblr media
Not many kdramas explore what it’s like to be a murderer’s family. Taxi Driver taking the issue is somewhat completing the drama’s duty to show the viewers many perspectives of justice and revenge: the law, the unlaw, the victims, the bereaved family, the bad guys, the wrongly accused, and now the bad guys’ family.
I’m glad the writer didn’t follow the psychopath by genetic trend but instead showing how the killer’s family life is and how the psycho’s action affect his own family, even to his son’s life who to that age never know the truth.
The revenge for Oh Chul Young even not as big as the other revenge, somewhat is the most satisfying yet heartbreaking for me. Because for Oh Chul Young to feel pain and regret they actually had to make his son suffer without ever knowing what he did wrong.
Also makes me think how wide the spectrum of someone’s life is, as Do Ki must be conflicted when he met Oh Chul Young’s son. The family of someone who killed his mother is in front of him, and that person knows nothing about it. While the revenge plot doesn’t quite add up, it could be taken that this revenge played a great part in Do Ki. That when he revenge someone, he doesn’t revenge on a single organism, but on someone evil whose family is as innocent as the victims.
Because to the world, someone might be a sick apathetic murderer worthless of life. But for his family, he was a part of their lovely life.

Is Death the Best Revenge?
Almost everyone who watch this drama think that the U-data episodes is the best revenge plot so far. I understand that. The chairman is sick, obviously insufferable, and 100% will never repent on what he did.
But when they showed the bomb in the main server, I was like... he only got to suffer for less than an hour?
Maybe it hit close to home. I had worked and study in the same area of expertise with people who deal with victims of abuse/bereaved families who's going through trauma and rehabilitation. And mostly, yeah, those with trauma want the perpetrator to be dead... at first. But then, they realize that death won't bring their families back, won't bring their happiness back.
If we're talking about moral here, then forgiveness is the best medicine. Just like Ko Moo Won did to Jung Ba Reum in tvN's Mouse. But then, the concept of Taxi Driver is revenge. And when talking about revenge, the victims and the bereaved families think that the best revenge is seeing the person who caused their pain to also suffer as painful as they do.
Maybe for Go Eun, it will end her suffering and guilt. And I understand that very much. But thinking of other victims, I can't help but regret the U-data's chairman ending. He got to suffer for less than an hour before his death while the victims and the bereaved families suffer for life. I thought when watching episode 7 they will make the chairman suffer for life just like the victims (and other bastards they punish before).
Not just once or twice in real life I saw the bereaved families or the victims feel empty after hearing the news of their perpetrator's death by suicide/some kind of fast dead. And it took them long to recover and accept the fact that those bastards don't have to think about them and regret and repent, instead just die. Just escape.
I don't know, maybe the episode just too close to me that I feel disappointed of how the chairman's life ended. What he did was beyond evil and he doesn't deserve easy death. Boom and gone, just like that. He deserves life suffering.
Thus, I hope Prosecutor Kang Ha Na doesn't stray too much from her principle. Because, despite the best revenge we ever need from our deluxe taxi team, we need something real that we can rely on in our life. That justice can still be achieved in real life.
