Was listening to “Just A Man” and it just hit me, the pain in this man’s voice.

All the worry and overthinking and reassurance and “I’m just a man, this is justified” and “I’m just a man, I am in no position to be making this choice” and convincing himself with one thing or another and he’s so worried and he’s just making such a big deal over this one stranger. This one child. This one baby. The son of his enemy, reassured he will get revenge and kill everyone he’s ever known and loved. Fussing over this single decisions, like it’s the biggest most important decision he’ll ever make. Just so much thinking and questioning and regret and worry in this one song about sacrificing a child to save everything he has.

And then we get to Scylla. And Thunder Bringer. And Odysseus.

Where it’s all bloodshed and sacrifice still, of people he knows and loves.

But there’s no debate or questioning. Not entire song solely for this moment. Just a quiet “not much to say” or “I have to see her.”

Just to clarify, in regards to my recent posts, I really wish and hope Jax is a good guy, just damaged and traumatized. I just don’t want to convince my mind that he’s good, and then be crushed when new episodes come out and it turns out Hey. He really was just an asshole. Because there’s only so much content and so much we can theorize about and be right.

Maybe I don’t like Ragatha because of her flaws. And her flaws are too much like mine…

I cannot stop thinking about Episode 5 of TADC because Ragatha is, however unintentionally, one of the best examples of how isolating and difficult it is to interact with the world as an autistic person I have ever seen. To the point it genuinely makes me sad to think about her. I need to make a post expanding on this at some point but rn just. The way everyone assumes there’s some sinister hidden meaning to everything she does and says but she’s literally just trying to be nice and she doesn’t understand why it’s not working. The way she tries so hard to make connections but it constantly falls flat, she says things that hurt without realising how or why. She follows the rules she’s been taught will make her friends — she’s kind, she’s forgiving, she’s accepting and apologetic when she messes up, but for some reason it’s just not working. She tries to mimic other people, she tries to laugh at past experiences, tries to open up about her past like everyone else is doing, but now everyone’s uncomfortable and looking at her like she’s crazy and she doesn’t get it!! She doesn’t get it!!! Jax is a jerk and he’s mean to everyone but for some reason Pomni likes him and she doesn’t get it, she doesn’t understand! Pomni tells her it’s okay to be a jerk sometimes but Ragatha doesn’t like being mean, she wants to be nice to people, but she does it anyway, she gets mean like Jax and Zooble do but now Pomni’s looking at her like she’s done something wrong but she just did what she asked her to!! She doesn’t get it!! At the end of the episode everyone goes off into their groups and Ragatha is left alone, after having tried so hard to make friends and fit in and make people like her, she’s still alone, and everyone thinks she’s weird and unapproachable and she just has to give up and accept that she is inherently unloveable. Her evil alter ego tells her she’s going to die alone and nobody loves her and the only thing she corrects her on is the fact that they can’t die here. The few that might like her when she’s around don’t miss her when she’s gone, because there’s nothing to miss. Ragatha has spent her whole life systematically stripping away everything that makes her different and unlikeable in order to make herself more palatable to others, and in the process she has made herself a personalitiless blank slate with no unique identity for others to latch onto and appreciate. She has nothing to add to any conversation because she’s too afraid of being disliked to have a memorable personality beyond being generally polite and nice. And just. God. Someone get this girl some noise cancelling headphones and a therapist on speed dial, being this good of a representation of what it’s like to be autistic, especially to be an autistic person with trauma, is not good for the soul. That final shot just destroys me right in the heart. My poor girl.

There’s so much jealousy spinning inside both Ragatha and Jax. 

Ragatha is obviously very jealous of Jax. I’m working my ass off over here, trying my damned hardest to be nice and positive at any moment because that’s what they need from me. And then here comes this asshole and Pomni likes him more than me? Why? Is everything I do… not worth it? Not enough? An I not trying hard enough? Am I not nice enough? Am I not enough? Jax doesn’t even try, infact he tries overkill to be mean, and yet…? 

Jax seems like he was jealousy of Gangle, when saying “Do you think Gangle is actually capable of being happy?” Just in the way he moves and acts. Almost like he’s jealous that Gangle who permanently stuck with the tragedy mask on her face while her comedy mask constantly breaks, can still be happy. Like- she is literally designed to be sad. And if she can do that, why can’t he? Especially with Zooble who he mocks the most and who is one of the only ones of them that has a better snap back at Jax’s snide comments. If Gangle can be happy with Zooble, and Zooble dislikes Jax the most, maybe it’s a sign that he can’t be happy. Someone who was designed to be sad, Zooble is their source of happiness. And if that source of happiness smdoenst like him, can he ever be happy?

“Idk, it just feels like she’s taking advantage of you…”

What if Jax says this because this is the way he thinks? Because he would never be that nice to someone if not to take advantage of them. 

He’d apologize to Pomni, to piss off Ragatha.

He’d help the Goo Monster and return the bandits to see death and blood and violence.

He’d genuinely ask Pomni how she’s doing in hopes she would relate to him so he can complain about how annoying the job is.

Jax sees Ragatha being so overly nice to people all the time, and instead of it being because she craves approval, fears abandonment, and doesn’t want to become her mother (assumingly a terrible and mean person) he sees that behavior as something someone would only do if they wanted to take advantage of someone. What other possibility could there be??

Or, it could also be because he speaks from experience. No one’s ever been nice to him except to use him, and so he’s mean, that’s how others know he likes them. He’s annoying, so it’s impossible for someone to genuinely like him, and they can only have bad intentions. (Maybe Mr. Froggy was nice to him, before using him for his own benefit??)

Jax’s manipulative ahh tendencies: Pointing out the other’s flaws to Pomni to distance her from them

Kinger:

Episode 3, Pomni spends the entire adventure with Kinger. What is the first thing Jax says to her after the adventure is over?? “So how was it being stuck with the crazy one?” Disappointed when she says it wasn’t that bad.

Gangle:

Episode 5, the third adventure is Gangle’s, not his own after two in a row. Turns to Pomni and expresses how weird it is and how much of a loser Gangle is because of her suggestion. Pomni deflects by saying Jax threw her out of a moving truck. (very funny and underrated moment imo)

“Do you think Gangle can actually feel happy?” It’s said casually and sincerely, but why bring it up? And what’s that excuse for when Pomni asks for clarification? “I don’t know, her comedy mask always breaks.” Kinda a weak explanation. (Perhaps jealousy, but I digress)

“Look, Gangle’s up to bat, how do you think this’ll go?” Asked to Pomni, prompting her to respond with something mean. Also implying Jax is trying to get Pomni to think Gangle is weak and couldn’t be able to do anything substantial. 

Ragatha:

“Seems like that old Ragatha charm is wearing off.” Immediately clocks and points it out to Pomni, giving her that one, singular reason to why Ragatha may be acting that way after she goes to help Kinger, at a loss and unsure how to help and support Pomni best.

“Doesn’t she get on your nerves? etc.” Whole ass speech about how Ragatha being nice is actually a bad thing, continues even after Pomni defends her.

“Do you remember at Spudsy’s when you told Gangle to kill herself?” Exaggerating Ragatha’s drunk moment. She did say something mean but didn’t tell Gangle to kill herself. And he did the same thing to Gangle, except he didn’t feel the need to bring that up. Nor does he ever apologize or feel sorry for it like Ragatha.

He doesn’t say much about Zooble directly to Pomni, but also I feel it’s because we don’t see Pomni and Zooble share a lot of screen time and make genuine connections.

And it works.

I don’t know if Pomni offering Ragatha to bat for her was Pomni trying to talk to Jax more, and in turn push Ragatha away, but it definitely could be read like that.

And right after the adventure, Jax pulls Pomni away from the group. “I can show you that thing I was talking to you about early.” “Oh… uh… sure!” Clearly not how after-adventures usually go, Pomni is surprised at Jax’s suggestion but they clearly part from the group, Jax taking Pomni away from the others.

When Jax makes the Breaking Bad reference in episode 5, Ragatha asks if it was a reference to something when Zooble says it was. Perhaps meaning Ragatha was trapped before the creation/airing of Breaking Bad

(Or that she was sheltered and never watched the show)
