I will never get over the fact that thousands of Armenians were massacred in 2020. The grief that has been left behind in their passing. The lives they were meant to live. I shouldn’t be seeing graves marked with the dates “2001-2020”.
These people were not killed in a war, they were killed in a genocide. They were murdered defending their native land against colonizers. Those who seek to use and destroy our land for its natural resources. Those who wish to see Indigenous populations destroyed or Turkified.
Armenians have been resisting genocide and Turkification since the Turks entered our highlands in the 10th century.
I understand the complexities of many Azerbaijani’s and today’s Turks being mixed with the indigenous populations of our region— including Armenians. However, that acknowledgment can only go so far when they choose to identify with the colonizing group, and commit genocide against indigenous people that resisted assimilation. When you choose to identify with the colonizer, when you take on their identity, you become them. You are them.

If you donated literally any amount of money to ao3 then you are legally required by me (threat) to at minimum double that amount donating to this gofundme.
It’s a for Black-led non profit summer initiative that plans to travel the US educating and uplifting Black teens and young adults, but they need $500,000 to do it, and they only have two weeks left to raise that money. If you care as much about Black Lives Matter and social justice as you claim to, you’ll stop emptying your wallets for ao3 and start putting your money towards causes that actually matter instead.
If you like this post without reblogging I’ll snipe you, you know just liking a post doesn’t do shit to circulate it. Come on.

a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:
pretending to gag at asian food
pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person's ethnic name correctly, or asking, "can i call you by something else?"
adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
using the words "oriental" and "exotic" to describe asian people, particular asian women
ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, and central asians
making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history

You know, I'm actually pissed off that this article was so hard to find. Why is no one talking about it?
I'm also assuming that they won't fix it since Flint Michigan still doesn't have clean water.
Remember, when we say Black Lives Matter, part of that is talking about shitty infrastructure causing diseases in Black neighborhoods due to under funding. Because the article is right. If this were a white city all of the politicians would be scrambling over each other to fix it.

just to be clear, the fact that music was nominated for a golden globe is absolutely disgusting. every single (adult) involved in that gross, ableist movie should be sickened by themselves.
for those of you who don't know, music (2021) is a movie being directed by sia about a nonverable autistic girl. not only does it not include any actually autistic people in the movie itself but it also only took advice from autism speaks which is looked at as a hate group by the majority of the autistic community. leaked scenes have also shown the movie glorifying prone restraints which are incredibly dangerous and have resulted in major injuries and even death to disabled people as recently as last year.
autistic people just like me have been incredibly outspoken about how harmful this movie is but the allistic have been mostly silent. we are already seeing reviews calling this movie 'inspiring' and important' and it's absolutely horrific! we need your help calling this out. please stand with us and call out this disgusting display of disrespect to autistic folks.
💛 - your local actually autistic pal
p.s. please, please reblog if you aren't autistic.

PLEASE DON’T SCROLL
even if you only reblog, that’s enough
i was debating on whether or not i should post this on tumblr but seeing as there haven’t been posts about this yet, here it is. i’m exposing my real location and nationality but it doesn’t matter.
if you have been active on twitter, you may already know #savemyanmar is trending. long story short, there has been a military coup. several nations have released statements but i want to share insight on what’s happening in the country.
memes about a coup have been circulating around for a couple days and when i slept at 2 am last night, we were still under the rule of the National League for Democracy (NLD). while they are not technically democratic, they are the closest we’ve got. when my mother woke up at 6 this morning, she was notified that the country was now under the rule of the military.
banks services are no longer available. wifi was cut at around 7-8. some people got wifi again earlier but many got it barely thirty minutes ago. this is bad for businesses especially ones that require international communications. additionally, international students like myself are experiencing anxiety; how do we pay for and attend classes if we’re not sure wifi is a given?
myanmar has a long, complicated history with military governments. the last time the military went into rule was in 1962 and only stopped in 2011, following the 2010 elections. there was a huge protest in 1988 lead by students that resulted in lots of death. during the military junta, resources like rice, water, oil, were scarce. the gist is military rule is bad for us.
all of my followers are not myanmar citizens, i’m sure but as part of the international community, please help us. here is a petition that you can sign (although i’m not sure if that can do much). there may be protests in front of myanmar embassies so look out for those. most of all, please help spread awareness.
the people here are coping with dark humor, primarily in the form of memes but we don’t know how long this rule will last, even though the official statement said only a year. here’s something that pretty much sums up our coping mechanism:

So famed palestinian film director Mohammad Bakri was just fined the equivalent of $50,000 for a documentary he made in 2002 about the "Battle of Jenin" where the IDF tore apart the jenin refugee camp during the second intifada or uprising against israeli occupation. They didn't allow anyone to come in and out as they unleashed hell on everyone. The UN commission was supposed to investigate it but israel didnt let investigators come in. Bakri has been on trial for over a decade just because he filmed israeli soldiers "without their consent" soldiers who committed many crimes. So heres a link to the 50 minute film where he simply documents the aftermath and the retellings of the massacre from the Palestinian perspective which shouldn't be illegal in the so called "only democracy in the middle east" but israelis were sure mad
vimeo
**i have not watched this doc in full bc its too hard for me but i encourage people who dont know about this event to just listen to palestinians speaking about the horrors they faced. I dont think i need to put trigger warnings bc its pretty self explanatory what ur going to witness and hear**

a lot of you hate historians and archaeologists, and i think that’s a problem
look, i fully recognize that there are reasons to be skeptical of history and archaeology. i am very on board with criticizing academia as an oppressive institution, and the way that researchers take their bigotry and bias with them to their work. i also recognize that academia does a pretty bad job of communicating what it does to the public, and that’s a part of why people’s hostility to it is able to flourish.
but i am disturbed by the pervasive narrative in online leftist spaces that people who research the human past are ignorant and bigoted, and i think we need to do more to combat that narrative.
historians being homophobic has become a whole meme, and it feels like people are just using historians as a homophobia scapegoat, when in reality the humanities are overwhelmingly left-leaning. people also keep blaming historians for erasing the homoeroticism of fictional literary characters, which is just… not what historians do. homophobic biases and erasures in the interpretation of history over the past few hundred years are a very real thing that’s important to learn about, but scholars have radically shifted away from that approach in recent generations, and these memes are not helping people outside the field to understand history and reception. instead, a lot of people are coming away with the impression that…
Tumblr media
(source… really? nobody?)
this thread gets bonus points for the comments claiming that modern historians argue about whether achilles was a top or a bottom using homophobic stereotypes, which i can only guess is a misunderstanding of the erastes/eromenos model (a relationship schema in classical greece; i think people have debated whether achilles and patroclus represent an early version of it). also a commenter claims that the movie troy invented the idea of achilles and patroclus being cousins when no, they were also cousins in lots of ancient sources.
there’s this post about roman dodecahedra (link includes explanation of why the original post is misleading).
there’s this thread about how some thin gold spirals from ancient denmark look exactly like materials used in gold embroidery to this day but archaeologists are stupid and don’t know that because they dont talk to embroiderers enough. in fact, the article says they were most likely used for decorating clothing, whether as a fringe, braided into hair, or embroidered. so the archaeologists in the article basically agree with the post, theyre just less certain about it, because an artifact looking similar to a modern device doesn’t necessarily mean they have identical uses.
this thread has a lot of people interpreting academic nuance as erasure. the museum label literally says that this kind of statue typically depicts a married couple, giving you the factual evidence so you can interpret it. it would be false to say “these two women are married” because there was no gay marriage in ancient egypt. (interpreting nuance as erasure or ignorance is a running theme here, and it points to a disconnect, a public ignorance of how history is studied, that we can very much remedy)
lots of other conspiracy theory-ish stuff about ancient egypt is common in social justice communities, which egyptologists on this site have done a good job of debunking
oh, and this kind of thing has been going around. the problem with it is that there are loads of marginalized academics who research things related to their own lives, and lived experience and rigorous research are different forms of expertise that are both valuable.
so why does this matter?
none of these are isolated incidents. for everything i’ve linked here, there are examples i havent linked. anti-intellectualism, especially against the humanities, is rampant lately across the political spectrum, and it’s very dangerous. it’s not the same as wanting to see and understand evidence for yourself, it’s not the same as criticizing institutions of academic research. it’s the assumption that scholars are out to get you and the perception that there is no knowledge to be gained from thorough study. that mindset is closely connected to the denial of (political, scientific, and yes historical) facts that we’ve been seeing all around us in recent years.
on a personal note, so many marginalized scholars are trying to survive the dumpster fire of academia because we care that much about making sure the stories that are too often unheard don’t get left out of history… and when that’s the entire focus of my life right now, it’s disheartening to see how many of my political allies are just going to assume the worst about the entire field

i’m gonna say it
having teenages and ppl in their early 20s with little to no experience with irl sex, dating and LGBT communities lead online discourse on what is sexual orientation and what labels mean has done incredible damage to our community
so much of the shit that has come out of twitter and tumblr in the recent years literally sounds like a homophobic fever dream but if you dare point that out you will be sent death threats by a swarm of teenagers who have never talked to a lesbian offline

britney spears has lost the court case, again, to end her father's conservatorship over her, and it makes me so fucking SAD that no one is in her corner, apart from like... britney stans that the rest of public opinion and internet treats as a joke. hashtag free britney itself started as a joke. meanwhile, she's now saying that she will not perform any more as long as her father has control over her, and still, no one seems to be in her corner. she has been infantilized since the beginning of her career, and her mental breakdown added that extra ~insanity~ layer to it all, thus turning her into someone who is treated condescendingly, with pity, with sarcasm, like a lobotomized version of her former self performing for others to make fun of her. but she is not given empathy. where is the fucking compassion?? not even out of nostalgia for a pop icon formative for an entire generation, in the full meaning of the word? who is having britney's back?? she deserves so much more.

turkey and azerbaijan are attacking armenia right now, and it’s 1915 all over again because the world is distracted and people are too busy wondering if they’re gonna live or die, and who gives a shit about my country anyway? my mum told me to tell my friends and explain to them what’s happening and that we are the victims in this war because azerbaijan is spreading lies and people are believing their lies and i told her, what good is that going to do? do you think anyone’s going to come to our aid? is russia going to help us? is america? is england? erdogan said they will finish what their ancestors started, and he means genocide. he means ethnic cleansing. he means to massacre every last one of us. and in doing so admitted to the very same thing turkey has spent 105 years denying. i don’t know who to tell and what good telling people will do because we’re a small, insignificant country, and we have nothing to offer to the people in power, the handful who rule the world. so i sit here with my pain and i feel helpless. i know there’s twitter threads and links to petitions and people being urged to contact their senators, and sorry if im being pessimistic, but azerbaijan has been attacking us for the last 22 years, and though we defend ourselves, we can’t do anything to stop them. they’ve violated ceasefires (and geneva conventions) multiple times. i don’t think they’ll rest until every last one of us is dead.
we just want peace. we just want to live peacefully. we’re not asking for a lot here.
