#ArchitectureandContext: The epical moment of the Japanese cherry blossoms take the dreamy and fairy-tale like tree house by Terunobu Fujimori to another level altogether. It is impressive to see how the temporality of nature is the single most defining element here, overpowering the experience of architecture, despite the architecture being so outspoken. Sitting within the Kiyoharu Art Village, this teahouse was designed to relax and enjoy views of the blossoms from within. The simple and modern interiors juxtapose the surreal and artful exteriors. Made of Earth,wood and stone, it is supported on a single 80 year old cypress trunk, capable of withstanding extreme weathers. It elevates the structure by 4 metres, allowing seclusion and expansive views of the surrounding trees. #ArchitectureandContext: The Louvre-Lens Museum in France situated amid a 20-hectare wasteland, was conceived as part of an international competition by SANAA, in collaboration with Imrey Culbert, Catherine Mosbach and Adrien Gardère. The steel and glass structure is low and easily accessible that integrates into the site without imposing on it. #ArchitectureandContext: This image of the ‘Comb of the Winds’ sculpted by Eduardo Chillida, is a sublime representation of how nature and art can integrate to appear as one. The sculpture emerges from the rocks where the land and sea meets. Instead of fighting the forces of nature, it allows itself to succumb to it. The rusting and degradation of the Corten steel is symbolic of the passage of time, with the earth,wind and sea playing a pivotal role. The aluminium roof at the #PlantationRetreat is made of 600mm wide aluminium sheets clipped together in a standing seam. A concealed gutter offset inwards allows a thin edge, making the roof structure look lighter. When dealing with contoured sites, especially those of a larger scale, understanding the modulating levels and it’s effects on the structure, can be a complex process. Here, sketching becomes a powerful tool for intense studies on how the form fits into the gradient and responds contextually at various positions. #Sketching: Inspiration doesn’t come with a blank sheet. Lines, shapes and relationships are first drawn in the canvas of “mind”. The pencil eventually becomes inevitable. The initial sketches are about understanding scale and proportion, the impact of a project on its site. The series of sketches are drawn in a butter paper sketch book with the help of a 28cm long set square with 1cm parallel lines and frequently sharpened pencil. The book is used backwards, each conceptual sketch forming the underlayer of the next one, suggesting a sort of evolution in the process. A sheet with a grid lineout refines the proportions of the spaces. On arrival one walks up a gentle set of stairs along a carefully crafted low basalt masonry wall to reach the top level of the garden. The masonry planter bed flourishes with ecologically grown vegetables. With the house on one side and the pool in front on the other side, one catches a glimpse of the shimmering sea beyond. By placing the 20 meter long swimming pool in the direction of the sea and just above the boundary wall, it enjoys a seamless visual transition from the reflective pool surface to the ocean. #Detailseries: The green roof at the #workinprogress #PlantationRetreat extends over a brick vaulted ceiling. The retaining walls with the waterproofing layer around it holds the adjacent soil and protects the interior from seepage problems. This retaining wall anchors into the existing rock layers. A bench cut out of the existing rock extends into this space showing instances of how nature reveals itself even on the inside of this home. Stone cladding continues the raw textures of the existing rocks onto the vertical surfaces. The existing site landscape extends over part of the house to become a green roof , with rooms buried below. The wall structure is designed to be a combination of brick masonry, steel sections as well as concrete. Metal sliding windows form a light contrast to the otherwise heavy facade, opening the house towards the courtyards and views. The concealed sliding tracks in the floor and ceiling make the windows look seamless.
