am I supposed to justify my transmasc rui headcanon? uhh I'm going to anyway. it's always stuck with me how his character development has been signified throughout the game by his hair getting shorter. you can see the difference in these photos where in junior high he had this longish knotted hair but it's shorter and more taken care of in highschool (still a fuckass choppy haircut but that's his style) but even later in the game he gets a card with an alt hairstyle that's still shorter for an event that also focused on him and his growth

(mod if you don't know that idolrhythm game lingo I'm sorry 💔 fans will know tho). but also in middle school he's got his tie tied all weird but in highschool he's got it figured out so it kind of feels like he's embraced masculinity a bit!!

he's a director in his theatre troupe so he sort of takes on this leadership role. maybe important to note that he's not really known for it, there are other characters that have stronger themes of leadership, but it's definitely there with him where he feels a sense of responsibility over his group. & for rui theatre is friendship and he applies a theatre mindset to life as a whole, so this feeling of responsibility extends to his friends as well (his troupe are his friends too of course, maybe his closest ones!). anyway what I was leading up to here is that at one point another character describes him as like an older brother. of course leadership & responsibility aren't inherently masculine traits but framing it with that "older brother" context is very transmasculine to me, expect considering how the character who described him that way kind of reflects how rui was like as a small child!

further reinforcing the trans thing & older brother thing is how rui was utterly helpless & pitiful when he was younger (moreso in junior high, but we see him with it as a kid too). he drifted apart from his childhood friend- withdrew, stopped talking to her, they couldn't help each other even though they were both at their lowest.

using this to segway into he & mizuki's relationship though, the inability to help one another is a much more prominent thing with these two than it is with rui & his childhood friend. Rui & Mizuki don't really consider each other friends friends until highschool. In junior high they are only friends because they're both outcasts, and they don't have anybody else. They're acquainted because they decided it's better to suffer together than alone. they're companions in loneliness.

once they meet again in highschool, though, they really get to know each other, they start referring to each other like friends, not just people acquainted by drowning in the same waters. and to me that kind of reads like... they're friends now because they're getting to know each other's real selves, not the people beaten down by their own nihilism, by being loathed by both themselves and others, by suffocating in more "correct" positions forced upon them by other people. They are learning and expressing who they really are- this is them, they're getting to know each other for real this time. very transgender. ☝️

Seiya is to me, a girl hanging on everything she can to avoid realizing it, even if that means holding onto misogynistic point of view (« I’m a man, i won’t punch women » when the two most powerful saints she knows are literally women). She’ll come to peace with this at some point, especially with the help of Shiryu. Shiryu was mainly on vibes, and reclaimed by my friend group. We saw his first fight and went « yeah he’s trans ». Collectively agreed that he doesn’t know he’s trans. Not in the « egg » way, he literally doesn’t know that him being a guy has a word. As a couple, they are constantly holding to each other. Seiya so worried when Shiryu goes away that she (canonically) dreams of him every night. Shiryu doing insane stuffs with motive « I’m doing it for Seiya (and the others and Athena) ». They both consider each other’s life saviors and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other. They are very cute."
