I actually think the original was drawn in the other direction -> but since I only posted the gif, probably in the hopes that people wouldn't look at my mistakes too closely, it doesn't really make a difference.

I put some time aside to finally draw my Wei Shu fandesign! He's one of those voicebanks I've had a vision for for a long time... and it's finally his turn to shine.

(I have already drawn my An Xiao and Kevin fandesigns!)

I didn't write notes for An Xiao's design for some reason, so I'll keep it lowkey this time around as well: his beauty marks can be arranged in a "W" shape on one arm and "S" shape on the other!

A stylised GALENAIA (by @eclipsedsounds) reminds me of a fancied up Chris from @murderfabrication. If you compare them directly, they don't look that similar to me, though!

Maybe they should swap clothes someday...

I might draw more in the future... But here's my first attempt at stylising Sourin's new design.

I also posted it on Twitter, exceptionally, since that's where VirVox resides - if you see it there, you'll see that I shared some of my feelings about the design, but I'll go into deeper detail under the cut here.

Now that the initial shock has worn off, most of the designs are starting to look completely okay to me. Like they're Okay. I think they're decent attempts to keep the original key points intact while leaning in a completely new direction.

From drawing him, here are the things I noted about Sourin, who stood out to me for having been drawn poorly, which made the changes more jarring than they could have been (note that the artist draws beautiful and, undoubtedly, more skillfully than I do. They just happen to lack experience with drawing older men!):

The hair is actually pretty. Its shade is also much more pleasant than what onidaruma used.

I don't like the lighter colours near his face. A black shirt instead of a grey one would make his palette much more striking (and of course recognisable re: the previous design).

The open eyes are what make him look so weird!!! Close 'em!!!! The constantly closed eyes contributed to making him look like a gentle old man - this is one way, beyond the artstyle, that this new design makes him look younger.

While I think it wasn't necessarily meant to be greying hair, Sourin's original design had lower saturation in his beard and the roots of his hair. This contributed, visually, to making him look older. The second I coloured his hair in as fully blonde, he began to look way younger than I wanted him to.

My one actual complaint is that the new design looks too stiff. Sourin had a lot of flowy shapes, even beyond his long scarf(...?). Note the bottom half of each design: everything about the new one is so straight and orderly. Even ignoring the horizontal straight line at the top, his trousers have a pattern of vertical straight lines, and the rounder pattern has no motion whatsoever.

Visually, this made him look like a fun, creative old man. The new design lacks that personality.
