Justin Wheatley and his wife and three daughters live in the suburbs of Salt Lake City where they enjoy the mountains as much as the city. Justin graduated with a BFA from Utah State University in 2005. He is represented by 15th Street Gallery and Evergreen Gallery in Salt Lake City, Trove Gallery in Park City, Utah, and Foursquare Art Gallery in Mesa, Arizona. His work has been shown throughout the Western United States, and in Philadelphia and Vermont.

Artist Statement: (from an interview by Ehren Clark of UtahArtists.org)

“It’s about suburbia,” says Justin Wheatley of his newest work. “Suburbia is loaded with kitsch, we’re all living in this kitschy world where we try to make things look nice or beautiful or wonderful, but in reality, a lot of the times, its fake. It’s not always fake, but a lot of the times it’s just a facade. A stucco facade.”

In previous works, Wheatley focused mostly on individual buildings, and usually in a sympathetic manner; but this new work is about the collective and the critique is more acute, the insinuations more astute. A repeating pattern of nondescript roofs, like we see in “It’s all a façade,” is a motif that appears in many of these works. “The Great Wall of Friendly Grove” is the kind of scene one can see driving any major thoroughfare in Utah (and in so many other places just like it across the United States): a tall wall blocks the view of everything but the ever-repeating slopes of roofs in a planned community. But one must question, are the walls here meant to protect, or to hide?

The claustrophobia of “Huddling Within Walls,” is an obvious reference to the disharmony that may occur within the well-intentioned harmony of the master-planned community on many levels, be they social, environmental, economic, political, or religious. It can be a jungle out there in these pre-fabricated living environments, according to Wheatley.

But Wheatley is no activist and says, “I’m just as much a part of it. Maybe I would live in one of those master-planned communities if I had the opportunity to buy a house there. I don’t know. It’s like making fun of myself. It’s making fun of our society, while at the same time being a little ashamed of it. How long can we sustain it?’”

Perhaps his answer is found in “Something About the Modern Community,” an amalgamation of clean modernist homes floating in the sky. But this 20th-century utopia is more an ironic than any kind of literal statement for him. The castle- in-the-sky mentality may be a lingering dream for some, but perhaps the best part of Wheatley is found in his down-to-earth honesty and willingness to accept his role in his own reality, and to not remove himself when questioning and opening minds, while always being open about his personal supporting role in the absurdity of it all. For assuredly, as soon as the laughter stops, then the battle is lost.

“My name isn’t Ben.

Italy was the first place overseas I ever went. I went back and forth for years, so when I set up my first love business of cooking… jam…. “well preserved” was the perfect name.

I loved it so much, I kept it.

I graduated from art school with an Associate Diploma in Fine Arts, specialising in photography and printmaking. The only thing I really liked about drawing and painting classes was the colour pop quiz my painting teacher liked to play with me (“what colours make up that colour?”) and the three minute poses in life drawing classes. So it is funny I ended up loving drawing and painting more than anything again. I think I just lost confidence in my ability to express myself in that way.

I have always been encouraged to draw, paint and create. I think perseverance pays off.

“It’s an intuitive process. In chaos, I play with figures, altering their spaces, wiping off and keeping marks from previous layers. While creating new spaces over others until I obtain a certain atmosphere and the expression that I want…which is something I find while going along…a history is built into the canvas, and adds weight and poetry to the final image... I paint out of my inner world with all the sights, emotions, thoughts, people, things, atmospheres and the history that runs through me. It all shapes what happens on the canvas…almost like a diary with no words, based in a reality seen through my eyes. It has dreams, fantasies and sort of inner adventures tangled in between the pure reality, playing between the restless and standing still, always in a flux…a playfulness running in and out of the layers of oil paint, with a deep sincere essence holding it together. To me my paintings hold many secrets…and I like it that way. It gives them space to breathe and live their own lives; just like people…they have a sea of secrets too...”
