#RIP #Pat Martino When I first started learning how to play #jazz (having come from a rock background) naturally I had a great admiration and reverence for the legends I was introduced to, but I also had a hard time relating to any of the bebop language. But there was one guitarist who’s phrasing and attitude resonated with me right from the first note. Pat would play these seemingly impossible long runs so smoothly and effortlessly. He definitely stood out for me. (Influenced my time, phrasing, approach, legato/picking technique etc) I remember feeling like hey if I’m gonna play this stuff I wanna sound like this cat not only is he swinging but he’s shredding through the changes with his own unique style and flare. Then I remember talking to my teacher about him and he shared Pats UNBELIEVABLE backstory with me. Pat had had a seizure that not only caused amnesia but dramatically affected his physical health. Consequently, he had completely forgotten how to play & couldn’t even remember that he had had a successful career as one of the greats. Pat not only went on to learn how to play all over again from his own recordings 🤯🤯🤯 but did so in spite of his unfortunate physical limitations!! Talk about an inspirational story! This guy accomplished twice as much as any of us ever will in one lifetime with a mountain of obstacles. So for me the take away is “nothing is impossible” if you set your mind to it.
