was trying to wrap my head around why proserpina talked about effie’s accomplishments at the university in past tense yet didn’t say that effie had graduated, and i think i figured out why!

in tbosas, snow says that academy students graduate mid-summer, have a month off, and then start school again in september. and since the hunger games begin july 4th and last several weeks, it’s safe to say the academy graduation is held at the end of july after the hunger games have ended. and it’s implied that the university follows that same academic calendar since snow starts his freshman year there in september.

so based on this, and assuming this system wasn’t changed, it’s safe to bet that effie was a senior at the university during sotr and graduated after haymitch’s games. also, if effie was still a student during that year, she could be the person that drusilla was referring to here:

My work has the radio on and I usually don't really listen to it....but Elizabeth Banks has a really weird Pfizer PSA out about the pneumonia vaccine that I can hear over my headphones cause it's a LOUD add and I'm getting jump-scared by Effie Fucking Trinket screaming at Gen X to get a vaccine every ten minutes which is just fucking surreal.

But like......

It's giving birth to a headcannon.

Post-Revolution Effie Trinket as one of the few remaining famous faces from before the war, one of the few faces and voices left that the capitol trusts, is SO going to be the Go-To girl for all government PSAs. Any time you want the skittish remaining citizens of the Capitol to do anything like get new IDs or Register to Vote or Get a New Vaccine, they're gonna have to trot out Effie Fucking Trinket in all her ruffly colorful glory and plunk her down in front of a camera to speak at them in her weird capitol version of the fundie baby voice and reassure them that look, she's still alive and okay, the new government isn't out to get you, so they'll turn out and not get scared this is some new rebel plot to exterminate them all. She doesn't want the job, but she's been doing her "patriotic duty" in front of the cameras for 25 years, so what's one more government using her face and voice for their own purposes, right?

Also apparently Elizabeth Banks is 50?? So she's now actually Effie's cannon Hunger Games/Catching Fire/Mockingjay era age. Weird.

Contrast between Drusilla and Effie is so stark, telling and also flattering towards Effie. From the first meeting, Haymitch appreciated her sympathy and kindness, she might've been insensitive but she was still undoubtedly kind. That was what the tributes needed.

I also found it so interesting that no one joked about Drusilla in 12, they feared her, yet jokes about Effie were rampant, she wasn't seen as a threat.

Effie's kindness and comfort was what the tributes needed, they already faced enough cruelty but Effie was one positive aspect in the hell that was being reaped.

She was like the best stereotype of a Capitol person: ditzy, stupid but not unkind.

She was viewed as a human, not a killing machine and I'd wager that was one of the things that made Katniss be more aware that citizens of Capitol were STILL PEOPLE.

She also was just a cog in the machine, not a willing participant, someone wrapped into the Games by an accident. She didn't want to be an escort, she actually didn't get any pleasure from leading kids to their deaths and from Haymitch's pov it's clear that her positivity was a mask to save herself, a coping mechanism if you will.

effie was the last person he saw before entering the games and the first person he really saw upon getting out. and then he had to see her. on his birthday. as they sent kids to die. every. single. year. how much he must have hated how much he liked her

For me, it doesn't really matter if

Effie overcame her fear of needles and ended up getting plastic surgery or,

Effie never overcame her fear of needles and used other cosmetic methods instead.

Because the ultimate takeaway of that scene in the book isn't about whether or not she'll get surgery. The takeaway is 'isn't it fucked up that a young woman barely out of university is being pressured into feeling she needs plastic surgery, and in fact most of her friends have already started getting it'

Since the new book came out, I've read that a lot of people are giving up on Hayffie or people are saying that the epilogue ended the ship. I think the book and the interactions between the two characters need more interpretation. What happened in the epilogue does not and will not change Hayffie's TWENTY-FIVE YEARS of history. Just because they didn't get together in the early post-war period (the characters are beginning the process of healing and starting over) or didn't get together afterward, Haymitch still loves and will always love his girl Lenore Dove. We can never deny that, but it doesn't change the history that was made during the time Hayffie went through her ups and downs together, year after year of sharing a train and a penthouse and having each other. No one can deny that they have a history. Another thing is that the author left 24 years open for us, the readers, to make any kind of interpretation, as it was in the original trilogy of books that he had also left open and that is why we theorized until the arrival of this book and also gave room for the films to choose to go to the romantic side that even with this book it was not forced or disconnected, it did not change the end of the canon. Now, whether or not they got involved in that time of years is up to each one to decide what is appropriate. But we cannot underestimate Hayffie's relationship and story.
