idk what i was expecting when I knew Doctor Who decided to have its First Woman Doctor™️ during a bluntly politically regressive era of the show but…it’s still damn bizarre how uninterested 13 was in her new body, let alone that it was a female one. Like, regenerations have always been accompanied by excitement and confusion (and sometimes disappointment) as the new Doctor sees how their body fits. But 13 just says “Oh I’m a woman now? Does it suit me? 🥰” and that’s it. That’s the whole scene. She doesn’t even check out her face or anything in the car mirror when the crew is on their way to the landing site.
Compare that to 2 shoving a mirror in Ben’s hands so he can get a good look at his new face in it. How 3 is quite pleased with how expressive his face and keeps asking people what they think of it. 11 grabbing all over himself like mad, even hopping on one foot so he can feel his legs.
And 13 won’t even look at herself? What? And I know they wouldn’t’ve gotten into it anyway “because it’s a family show” but she has new body parts! As a lot of medically-transitioning trans people can tell you, that’s absolutely fascinating! And she doesn’t care. Not even about her face. Barely even about her femininity. That just plain does not seem like the Doctor.
In all honesty it feels like Chibnall is communicating to the audience that it doesn’t matter that the Doctor’s a woman; it’s just sort of…there. If it turns out to be just as inconsequential for the rest of 13’s run, I’m not convinced 13 is actually, meaningfully, “the first woman Doctor”.
#chibnall who couldn't provide a coherent story let alone meaningful narratives about gender and identity#but man I would've loved if it had#doctor who#chris chibnall

Fifteen: I love you, Doctor. Thirteen: I never say things like that. Fifteen: That's why you got me. Thirteen:: I should say that to Yaz. Fifteen: You never do. But she knows. You give her the old "It's not you, it's me" speech just before sending her packing for some reason. Thirteen: That doesn't sound very good. In fact, that sounds really bad. Fifteen: It does, doesn't it. *breaks the fourth wall directly at Chibnall*

With Doctor Who these days I'm primed to accept basically anything as long as it fullfills the basic demands of storytelling with some actual tension and charisma, but it did bother me that they made such a thing of Poppy being created from the Doctor's hopes and dreams but didn't tell us anything about how Belinda feels about children. Like she was not a part of that equation at all, but she's the one who ends up with the kid.
In the logic of the story it's whatever, but from a thematic and big picture perspective it feels really backwards.

it is important to encourage doctor who to do new stuff, because without that there is no show. however it is also fine to acknowledge that sometimes that new stuff is dumb as shit

I just binged the latest season of Doctor Who. Finished the last episode like 2 minutes ago so these are fresh impressions.
It was a little nuts. What happened with the Rani and Omega felt anti-climactic to say the least. It reminded me a lot of the Timelords coming back in The End of Time, but less interesting.
Regeneration, okay, sure. And all these disparate plot threads trying to tie themselves back together and RTD's signature "it works like this because I say so" on overdrive. It gets a little tiring, even though it's expected. I would like a little more internal logic to it, because that would make it feel more satisfying. The Last of the Timelords and Journey's End were both more cohesive and logical in terms of plot progression.
Having said that, even though I have lots of criticism for it, I did think this season of Doctor Who was the best since series 10. It was solid, decent, consistent, more or less coherent, and most of all engaging. I felt grounded and connected to Belinda and the Doctor in a way I didn't feel with Ruby and the Doctor last season. I feel like we've returned to a baseline of quality I have been sorely missing for the past *checks notes* 7 years.
I had fun watching it all at once but it didn't blow me away, which reminds me a lot of how I felt watching series 8 for the first time. Nowadays I rate series 8 extremely highly but back then I was mostly just casually entertained by it. I don't think series 15 will rise in my rankings like that going forward, mostly because if this is the end of Ncuti's run then this will be the end of something decent and not the beginning of something great (like series 8 was). But still. I haven't read anyone else's opinions yet so this is my initial perspective.
#doctor who spoilers#spoilers#doctor who#and yes the reality war was a bit of a mess but it was far better than last season's finale so I'm being optimistic#I am also always partial to 'the lie of the land' type concepts I really enjoy them#the reality war#rtd2

“so tell me. who? whoever is going to forgive me now?”
“i know it’s not much but- i do. i forgive you.”
#this will always be my favorite scene of this whole storyline#say what you will about forgiveness#you don't have to forgive someone like zainab#but if it's done right it can be so cathartic#chryed#eastenders

ok so interview with the vampire is on the list, what other shows have queer fanworks I can get into??
don't get me wrong, I am in the mood to actually watch some things but honestly the feeling of loading up ao3 after you've watched a new thing to catch up on all the fanworks is usually >>>>
so it's gotta have a fic community or I'm not that interested

Every souls-adjacent fromsoft game except Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring (and to a certain extent Sekiro) are just warping simulators, which is why Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring are the best fs games.
Like, I'm trying to play Dark Souls 2 from start to finish properly for the first time and I'm spending like a third of my time warping back to Majula and it annoys me so much. Dark Souls 3 is also annoying but at least that game feels good to play and has a good combat system and good bosses.
Hipsters will defend Dark Souls 2 but the reality is that it's just inferior in every way. I'm having fun with it now that I'm like 4 hours in but it's got such a bad clunky feeling that you just can't escape. Even if it wasn't inferior in terms of world design and bosses it would still be a worse experience overall.
