troubled teen industry program closure
(tw for child death and suicide.)
asheville academy/solstice east has officially closed its doors today and all children have been removed from campus (x, xx). this is following two suicides in one month at the program, one of which was a 13 year old girl (the other child’s age/identity has not been released).
one of america’s most infamous tti programs is finally vacant. solstice east and asheville survivors- i see you, and i am with you. i hope today, alongside the grieving, you can begin the healing.
so fucking deeply disturbing and disgusting that it takes two children violently killing themselves within a single month for authorities to care.
we can’t let up until every incarceration program for children is shuttered and locked.

when are adults gonna stop with “kids shouldn’t be exposed to [difficult or sensitive topic] until they can understand it” and realize it’s not possible to understand a thing until you encounter it
like okay probably don’t take your toddler to the movies for the first time and choose Violent Bloodbath 4: Everyone Gets Decapitated but putting them in a media bubble that doesn’t let them confront stuff on their own terms and schedule with you there to help process is some lazy bullshit

A couple of years ago we were all terribly concerned about the fact that a lot of American high schools are assigning such crushing homework loads that some kids literally don't have enough time to eat or sleep (and all this in spite of the fact that there's no good evidence that assigning homework actually improves academic outcomes at the pre-university level), but now we're hearing stories about those same schools struggling to stop kids from using ChatGPT to write their essays and suddenly It's The Children Who Are Wrong. Like, do you think maybe there's a certain level of cause and effect in play here?

No children are allowed in the Library of Congress.
It's not that kind of library.
In other words...
You are being lied to

when i become a parent and my kid is old enough to read i will print the united nations convention on the rights of the child and hang it on a very visible place of the house to remind my kid constantly that they are a human being with rights

I find your ageism and child rights posts really interesting I'm very glad there are people in the world who think about it like you do. I was homeless at 17, graduated from hs and working a full time job. I remember just being so insanely frustrated that I had saved enough money for my own apartment but legally could not sign the lease before my 18th birthday. I know there are many people who've been in situations like this where they can't get emancipated for financial, logistical, and safety reasons. Can't sign leases, can't buy a car, not allowed to be hired with many employers, always given less hours with no regard for availability. Constantly disrespected and forced to immitate "maturity". It always makes me really angry to think about how significantly my life improved the day I hit that threshold. Lots of people don't survive that long without housing and people seem wildly misinformed about the amount of resources homeless minors have avaliable to them. Anyway that's all to say keep posting boss ❤️
It's absolutely infuriating. Even turning 18 isn't always enough -- I know someone who was homeless at 18 and couldn't get an apartment because you had to be 21 (which was posted nowhere, and the company kept the rental application fee anyway). So many systems designed to keep people dependent and powerless. Anyway, thank you, and I'm glad you're free now.

The 5th Wave was a tropey mess that wasted its cast and source material but I would like to thank it for using that dumbass “when I was a child, I thought as a child…” quote in the context of a story where kids saved the day by completely subverting assumptions about how young people are stupid and easily manipulated

Pleasantly surprised this resonates so strongly with so many of you. I'd really appreciate it if a few of you could donate.
Child soldiers exist, war is not an adult topic.
Children die, death/murder is not an adult topic.
The Troubled Teen Industry exists, child trafficking is not an adult topic.
Children get raped, sexual assault is not an adult topic.
Children have alcoholic parents, addiction is not an adult topic.
Children get beat to the point of hospitalization at school, that level of violence is not an adult topic.
That when these things get into "kid friendly" media at all, they tend to be heavily censored is about protecting adult control over kids, not about protecting children.

I genuinely hate seeing comments like this. Because you just know the main priority is less so protecting kids but moreso controlling them, making them fear you.
This comment was on a vid about a boy who was apparently "born bad". The boy liked watching dark horror films and murdered his mother because he had severe mental problems that went ignored by the adults around him and enacted what he saw in a violent crime show. This boy engaged in aggressive behavior regularly yet the adults ignored his screams for help and it eventually cultivated in him killing his mother. This boy's actions were because he didn't get the mental help he needed, and not just because he watched horror or "age-inappropriate" content. Watching horror movies at a young age does not automatically make you become a sociopath or a killer!
This comment was not stated with the intent that you should inform kids, that you should educate, help, discuss with and guide them. The implications of every sentence very clearly lend themselves to the concept of parental power, controlling, punishing and striking fear into your kids to get them to do what you want. I hate comments and ideals like this and parents doing this "cruel to be kind" shit where they mistreat and threaten their kids in the name of "love" need to be "shut down quickly".

the way people talk about children/teens is insane people will just willingly reveal they think an entire class of person deserves to be oppressed because they’re annoying

pepl be like "The idea of any movie being “allowed” to be bad because it’s for kids is stupid" but never extend that to "the idea of something being "unable" to take themes like murder, rape, slavery, etc completely seriously because it's for kids is stupid"
