Dick Grayson and Donna Troy: Platonic Soulmates
"Were you ever in love with him?" "Romantically? No. But I love him as one of my dearest friends." -New Teen Titans (1980) #28
"Donna's face quavered as I remembered when we first teamed up. I could have fallen easily in love with her then. Now, years later, I knew I did love her, more than I ever could if I were only her lover." -New Teen Titans (1980) #38
"Donna, we've gone through so much together, and in not all that many years. Yet I feel as if I've known and loved you all my life." -Tales of the Teen Titans (1984) #50
"Donna and I were thirteen when we became best friends. I remember after her first date she called me to gossip about it. Later she helped me get past my breakups with Carol and Joanie. And I sat up all night with her after David and Lee. Now she's having a baby." -New Titans (1988) #89
"So, do you remember? The first person who made your cheeks burn? It was Donna, wasn't it?" "Donna? Why does everyone think we were an item?" "Maybe because of the way you smile every time you say her name." "I love her. I've probably always loved her. But she's almost like a sister to me. Someone I somehow always knew rather than someone I discovered. She never made my breath catch so much as...well...she almost made it easier to breathe." -Nightwing Secret Files (1999)
"Dick...I love you for this." "Well, the feeling's mutual." -Wonder Woman (1987) #165
[Dick silently looks on as Bruce and Diana have a conversation about Donna's death] "I should have been there to protect her. I should've sensed that she needed me. She was my sister. She was a part of my soul..." [Dick starts crying] -Titans/Outsiders: Secret Files and Origins (2003)
"It's Nightwing whose soul shines the brightest. Raised in the shadow of the Bat, he overcame the death of his parents and the darkness of his mentor. Brave, unselfish, utterly kind--who wouldn't fall in love with that strength and that smile?" -The Return of Donna Troy (2005) #2
"Bottom line? No, the bottom line, Dick...is that you led us then and you lead us now. And I'd follow you into hell if I had to." -JLA (2006) #50
"It's going to be weird, though. Not having your best friends around you." "You'll have me, ya goof." -Titans (2016) Special #1
"He's so honorable, Dad. He's such a good man. A lot of our friends say we're like brother and sister. I think that's right. He knows more about me than almost anyone. I love him—but I've never been in love with him. He's my best friend. But he's something more, too. He's family." -Titans (2023) 2025 Annual

Okay I’m being so for real right now: I cannot see how Discowing stands out from the rest of these costumes. Like are we just ignoring Jericho? Starfire? Even Cyborg is funky as hell.
And you know what? They rocked that funk. It was an aesthetic, guys.

#aza's dc madness#the little spike or whatever of the dialogue balloon makes it look like donna is saying this#which just makes this 1000x better imo#cause yes she *would* defend their suit designs#and she's right#it's an aesthetic and they fucking killed it

This has been a topic in one of my discord groups today and I’m so curious what everyone’s approach is as a writer.
Writing linearly means starting at the beginning of the story and writing each scene in chronological order from beginning to end.
Writing non-linearly means you might start midway through the story and write the beginning later, or you might write scenes at random and join them up later, or you add in placeholders as you write to go back to later (like “add action scene here”).
Outlining means coming up with a sequence of plot points to guide the story - i.e. planning/mapping out what the main story beats will be throughout it.
Personally I’m a linear writer, and I don’t outline. I have a loose idea of where the story is going to go, but that’s it. And I can’t skip scenes or use placeholder text — my brain starts shrieking at me lmao.
#i rarely if ever outline#and if i do i use that word very loosely#i just get the scenes and plonk them on the page and connect if i can#but get back to it later if i can't#that's why my blog title is [more here]#my wips are 90% [more here] with an occasional scene or two

it is honestly amazing how much of writing and editing is just. logistics. like... do i use a name here or a pronoun? if i move this dialogue tag to the middle of this line and break it in half, does the end of the line hit harder that way? what if i move the tag to the front? what if i remove it entirely? ...wait, whose point of view am i in; can i reasonably say this character is appalled, or must i say they look or seem or sound appalled? is this a deliberate action or a step-removed one; is her hand closing on his shoulder, or is she closing her hand on his shoulder? environment environment environment, we need to break all this dialogue up with some narration, the scene is coming untethered. what! are! they doing! with! the rest of their bodies that are not hands! fuck fuck fuck FUCK i forgot we covered this two chapters ago and now i either need to cut this whole chunk or find a reason to reprise the conversation from earlier. name or pronoun? name or pronoun? name or pronoun? move this clause around in this sentence? oh i'll add this phrase-- nope, never mind, past!me added the same phrase two lines down. okay, if i add too much environmental narration it's going to take away from this bit, but not enough and it won't feel grounded. what if i move this to its own line? where the FUCK are their hands?

Something about, idk, crunchy? rock music makes me think of Dick Grayson. Like specifically when his life is falling apart but he's angry about it, a whirlwind of rage and self-loathing claiming he's fine because he is, thank you very much. Maybe it's when he's angry at Bruce for trying to say he can't be Robin anymore so he strikes out as Nightwing. Maybe it's when he quits the Titans and goes fully solo in Bludhaven. Maybe it's in the aftermath of one of the various deaths of friends and family he experiences. Just, angry Dick Grayson, so so angry with what's happening to him and around him that it fuels him, as unhelpful as it is in the long run
I just... don't know how to phrase it all that well, but the like, crunchy rock fits. It fits. Please tell me someone sees my vision
(ft. the song that made me think about this again and finally put it into words)
#aza's character musings#nightwing#dick grayson#i feel like at least two other songs by ferry fit whatever genre this and thus angry dick very well too#maybe i should start building a nightwing/dick grayson playlist...#i did it for satosugu as well as gojo and geto separately so like... i could#i could#i might#Spotify

idk what budding young writer needs to hear this but if u don't want to write a scene you can just skip it. just hit enter, type a couple of symbols (asterisks, hashtags, dashes, whatever), and hit enter again. that's writer code for "and some boring stuff happened, and then it was later." u don't have to write boring shit that no one cares about.

I SEE IT CLEARLY NOW I DONT WANT NIGHTWING TO BECOME BATMAN. I NEED BATMAN TO BE MORE LIKE NIGHTWING. DESPITE EVERYTHING I WISH HE WAS HOME, SO WE COULD TALK. REALLY TALK. I’D TELL HIM HOW PROUD I REALLY AM. THAT NIGHTWING IS THE BETTER VERSION OF WHAT BATMAN WAS MEANT TO BE. THAT BECAUSE OF DICK GRAYSON, BRUCE WAYNE BACAME A BETTER MAN‼️‼️‼️‼️
#aza's dc madness#god when i read that log i just had to stop everything for a minute#full on just aza.exe has stopped working#too much emotion over dick and bruce for me to handle out of nowhere
