Today we went hiking, his choice. Today he didn't want to get out of "his" backpack to throw rocks, so I wore him up and down the trails for an hour straight, feeling his weight reshape my body as my shoulders resigned to moving down and back. Today we looked up, talked about trees, marveled at the rainbow before us, made more vibrant under a grey sky. Today we moved mountains beneath us, surveying small summits, looking for the city where "a big strong boy named Daddy" goes to work, and we waved. Today we saw a dog that looked like a bear, so we talked about bears. Today a man made a joke and laughed as we passed him by, and Leo thought he was laughing at us, so we talked about the difference between laughing AT someone and laughing WITH someone. Today Leo brought his Donatello pez dispenser and made sure to point out the trail markers to it (him?). Today I felt his dangling foot graze my thigh as we trudged over rocks and wet leaves, and I realized this may be one of the last times he takes in the view from his safe perch on my back. Today a mom and her grade-school son approached from the opposite direction and stopped to reminisce about his time on her back years ago. Today I thanked Leo for spending time with me in nature, to which he replied, "Yeah, it's pretty cool here, mama. I love you so much." Twinning with my bestie today. Didn't even plan it. Just noticed it when I looked down. Accidental matching is just one way a child is always on its mother's mind. There is literally nothing I do that isn't infused with thoughts of my kids. I can't even control it. Animal instinct at its finest, removed from the wild. I see something that sparkles or something that makes noise, or just a simple dog on the street and I reflexively see a kid's joy reflecting back at me. Kids are insidious. They'll mess with you and your world perspective.
