Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
Guyyysssssssss.
Woah.
I didn’t go into this book expecting to love it as much as I did but I am FUCKING IN LOVE.
———
Eliza and Her Monsters follows the story of 18-year-old Eliza Mirk. She is the author of an insanely popular webcomic called Monstrous Sea, but her identity is anonymous, as she goes by the name “LadyConstellation” online and gives no information about herself.
A new boy, Wallace Warland (who just happens to be the most popular fan fiction writer of Monstrous Sea) moves mid-senior year to Eliza’s school. Eventually, Eliza figures out his identity, but she still remains hidden. They grow closer and bond over their love of Monstrous Sea.
Until one day, Eliza’s identity is revealed, and it causes a lot of problems for her.
———
I didn’t know I needed this book until I read it, but I needed it SO MUCH.
Eliza and I are very similar in a few ways and I think that’s why I felt so strongly about this book.
If you haven’t read it, go out and buy the book. I promise you, it’s worth it. Just take my word for it.

The Hate U Give - Angie Thomas
⚠️ Spoilers Ahead ⚠️
Oh.
My God.
Oh my God.
I don’t think I’ve read a book in a long damn time that was so... needed.
For this being your first novel, Angie... damn. You killed it.
This story revolves around 16 year old Starr Amara Carter. To save some spoilers and a long background explanation, this girl has been through a LOT.
It only got worse when she was a witness to one of her best friends, Khalil, being killed by a police officer.
A bit of background.
Both Khalil and Starr were at a party. A fight broke out and they decided to leave. They weren’t doing anything wrong, but they were pulled over by a police officer with the badge number One-Fifteen. He asked for liscence and registration from Khalil, the driver, who decided to ask why. This went back and forth a couple times before Khalil was asked to exit the car. The officer patted him down three times before going back to his car and telling Khalil to stay put. He didn’t. He opened the car door to ask if Starr was okay, who was still in the car with him. When the officer saw him move, he shot Khalil a grand total of three times, then pointed the gun at Starr. Everything in her life went downhill from there.
This is an amazing story addressing the topics of police brutality and racism, and the reality of having to go through a death and the grieving process of losing someone you loved. In the book after a long investigation and a court case, Officer One-Fifteen was not arrested, which horribly happens in our real world all too often.
This book is extremely relevant and so, so needed in this day and age. Not only that, but the writing and the characters are amazing too. This book is heartbreaking and amazing all in one. It makes you sob your eyes out. But the experience of this read is so, so worth it. If you haven’t read this book, go read it. Now. You won’t regret it.
