1. If you’re in Los Angeles any time from February 20th-April 5th, Jacob Hashimoto’s Yellow Giant and Gas Giant Studies exhibition at the Martha Otero Gallery is a must see.

Hashimoto’s work is derived from a combination of 3D rendering technologies and traditional applied craft, creating art that explores the tension between the infinite systems and actual reality.

2. It’s almost as if Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen knew the Polar Vortex was coming. The Row’s FW14 collection brought the concept of cozy to the extreme by experimenting with daring proportions and various textures.

3. Hear Karen O and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig perform the Oscar-nominated “The Moon Song”.

The duet was was co-written by Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and director Spike Jonze for his film Her, which Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlet Johansson sang in the film.

4. Fashion meets Tinder? We didn’t think anything could class up the Tinder model, but Moda Operandi just released a mobile app that allows shoppers to ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ fresh runway looks. The app then alerts you when the pieces are available for sale. 

5. With all the #SochiProblems and the controversy over Russia’s human rights record, it almost feels like this round of the Winter Olympics is about everything but the athletes.

Esquire continues this trend by weighing in with a satirical piece on corruption in Russia.

MOMENTS | Link up: Moncler Grenoble, Opening Ceremony, The Beatles’ 50th Anniversary, Legos Movie, Time Travel

1. Opera meets “Tron” at the Moncler Grenoble FW14 presentation, and the result is one of the most fascinating New York Fashion Week shows we’ve seen.

2. Opening Ceremony’s FW14 show was delicious. Literally. While we were impressed by the collection itself, the chocolate waterfall that oozed down the white walls definitely had our attention.

As part of the #BoFLive interview series,  The Business of Fashion's editor-in-chief Imran Amed interviewed Opening Ceremony's Carol Lim and Humberto Leon about their rise in the fashion industry. 

3. It was the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show”! Watch Arctic Monkeys perform a cover The Beatles’ “All My Loving” at their first-ever headlining show at Madison Square Garden. 

Then listen to Lauryn Hill, in her first appearance since being released from prison, cover the Abbey Road track “Something”.

4. BAMIN (Build And Make It Now) bags are made of interchangeable parts—a little like Legos. The Lego Movie premiered Friday, and the consensus is that it’s pretty much amazing.

5. Time travel via iPad. The Yamada Taro Project, created by Katsuki Nogami, is an art project that swaps human faces with iPad screens in Berlin and Tokyo, allowing the performers to take on different personas.

1. One of our favorite collections that debuted yesterday is Creatures of Comfort’s serene, Japan-inspired designs.

2. Is the low cut pant making a comeback? Nicolas K’s FW14 collection has his models rocking bare abs and goth-y dark layers.  

3. Can’t stop. Won’t stop. In even more NYFW news, VFiles put out their second user-generated collection, and it’s pretty damn rad.

Here at BAMIN (Build And Make It Now), we’re all in for user-generated designs, so we’re especially stoked to see VFiles find and utilize the ambitious designers of cyberspace.

4. It’s Snapchat for professionals who like to use full sentences. Confide is a new app that lets you exchange top-secret messages without leaving a permanent trace on paper or on the internet. 

5. Future, Pharrell, Pusha T and Casino collaborate for their new song, “Move That Dope”. We gotta say, it’s pretty dope.

#TBT | Catwalk

New York Fashion Week officially kicks off today, and here at BAMIN (Build And Make It Now), we’re reminiscing about a time when fashion was less about the entertainment and more about the creatives.

We’re not gonna lie. We’ve definitely watched Catwalk, Christy Turlington’s fashion documentary, on repeat.

Catwalk follows Turlington’s life as she floats from city to city for the 1994 runways in Milan, Paris and New York (before London ranked alongside the original ‘Big Three’). But Robert Leacock’s documentary isn’t just about Turlington. Catwalk has delightful cameos from models Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni and Linda Evangelista, among others.

We can’t help feeling nostalgic when we see a baby-faced Kate Moss smoking backstage at a fashion show in Paris. Or giggle when Carla Bruni drunk dials her then boyfriend from a massive telephone. Nothing, however, quite tops Naomi Campbell falling off a couch while trying to light a cigarette. 

There are quieter moments, like when Turlington sits down with Karl Lagerfeld to talk about his show, mixed in with the frenzy of John Galliano toiling away backstage for his namesake collection.

Despite Galliano’s recent troubles, there’s a certain joy in watching a young Galliano instruct Kate Moss on how she should bolt down the runway for his iconic, drop-dead-gorgeous S/S 1994 collection.

As André Leon Talley informs a journalist, “Is fashion ‘art’? No! Fashion is hard work. Gritty. It is not glamorous. This man [Galliano] has no money. He has done a great collection with very few funds. He’s been supported financially by very few people. This man has NO MONEY.”

Watching Catwalk, we get the sense that fashion week was more about the creative toil behind each beautiful collection and less about big business. Today, there’s a clear shift towards more shows (and designers) to generate more money—more events mean more people. After all, last February’s economic impact around the Lincoln Center alone amounted to $20,902,193.

Though quite a bit about fashion week has changed since the 90s, there’s a certain ethos that still rings true for us. Karl Lagerfeld, while waving his once-signature fan, informs a reporter, “I never dictate. I propose. Our job is to propose, and I try to do nothing else.” 

We love looking back on fashion in the 90s, but we’re still excited to see what’s in store for the upcoming season—and what the most innovative designers have to “propose”.

1. New York Fashion Week has officially started, but as the New York Times noted, the “Fashion Diaspora” means quite a few designers have chosen to show their collection a little before the official date.

Rachel Comey, who has built a cult following from her distinctive prints and much-coveted booties, gave us a backstage peak at her FW14 show last night via Instagram.    

2. Dominic Clarke, a British photographer and filmmaker based in Londom, directed a dreamy short fashion film that features those killer bags and accessories from Prada Resort 2014.

3. Listen to St. Vincent’s dynamic vocals in her new song, “Prince Johnny”.

Since we’re anxiously anticipating St. Vincent’s forthcoming album, we’re playing this one alongside “Birth In Reverse” and “Digital Witness” to tie us over until her album pops up next week.

4. Art Wynwood (February 13-17) is contemporary art fair produced by Art Miami and will showcase the emerging underground art movement, with an emphasis on street art, murals, pop surrealism and graffiti.

5. Fashion Week (all four of them!) isn’t the only big event coming up. The Sochi Winter Olympics starts today. Though between the #SochiProblems (the ahem, shared toilets) and Putin’s unfortunate remarks about homosexuals, we’re a little wary of the shenanigans that may start trending on Twitter.

MOMENTS | Link Up: Nick Cave, The National, NYFW Nipponista, Young Thug, Transmoji

1. Nick Cave’s fantastical artwork is on display at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art. His part sculpture, part costume kaleidoscope-like works of art can be displayed as an exhibition or featured in performances. Cerebral and versatile.

2. Listen to The National’s haunting cover of Perfume Genius’s “Learning’. The melancholic tune is just perfect for these snowy days.

3. New York Fashion Week starts tomorrow, and all the fun events outside of the Lincoln Center frenzy are cropping up. Nipponista, a pop-up shop in SoHo, will exclusively showcase Japanese designers and brands that include Daisy Balloon’s art and Yohji Yamamoto clothes. 

4. Atlanta rapper Young Thug joins the ranks of rock and rap stars that have pushed gender boundaries. Ever the provocateur, Young Thug rocks a peplum, leopard-print dress.

5. Get all your feels out through emojis. Transmoji is an installation that allowed people to create an Emoji composition to be played back as audio for the Transmediale "After Glow" Art Hack Day exhibition in Berlin.

1. Here’s a sneak peak of Kate Moss’s debut as a contributing fashion editor for British Vogue. 

The March 2014 cover was shot by Mario Testino and stars a glammed out Daria Werbowy with a hint of that mid-90s fugitive rock ‘n’ roll. 

2. Who says you can’t remix your Ikea furniture? Italian design firm Teste Di Legno threw away the Ikea instructions and experimented with typically unrelated pieces and fit them for new use.

3. #STANDFORSOMETHING. The new Dr. Martens S/S 14 campaign features a diverse set of freethinking individuals like up and coming London singer Misty Miller.

The brand also launched their customization app that lets users design their own boot.

4. Prince released a new song, which is delightfully titled “PRETZELBODYLOGIC”. The song is from his forthcoming album with 3rdEyeGirl, PLECTRUMELECTRUM.

5. Drake’s record label, October’s Very Own, is definitely morphing into lifestyle brand. OVO is collaborating with Colette, the cooler-than-thou Paris retailer, for an exclusive collection.

The collection will hit us on February 17th. And right in time for Paris Fashion Week too.

MOMENTS | Link up: Drake On The Super Bowl, Angel Haze x Ellie Goulding, Prabal Gurung, Bowery Wall Mural, Phillip Seymour Hoffman

1. Drake was all-in for the Seahawks last night. And they definitely won the Super Bowl by a landslide. 

2. Angel Haze and Ellie Goulding team up to cover James Blake’s “Life Round Here”. And Angel Haze adds some of her own bars to the track too. We might be in love with this one.  

3. Prabal Gurung revealed his first (ever!) print campaign for his S/S 14 collection. The campaign features the beautiful Liya Kebede in his collection’s futuristic shapes.

4. Though the ‘Sandy’ themed Swoon mural on Bowery has been buffed over, artist Maya Huyuk is in the process of painting a new mural on the Bowery Wall.   

5. RIP, Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Yesterday, one of the most gifted actors of our generation passed away. We will miss his magnificent screen presence.

Indiewire has composed 10 incredible clips of the late actor’s work.

5. HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! We’re particularly fond of upcycling, and sustainability is the way to go. This silkscreen machine upcycles old newspaper and turns them into Chinese New Years-themed wrapping paper.

 Rihanna wore the label’s iconic ‘90s look for her appearance on Good Morning America, where she promoted her work for the Mac AIDS Fund. 

2. New York artist Aakash Nihalani uses bright neon tape to create playful geometric shapes in outdoor spaces.

3. The much beloved and awesomely progressive Pope Francis is the first Pope on the cover of Rolling Stones. Read the cover story here.

4. Watch Lorde cover James Blake’s “Retrograde” at her show in her Native New Zealand, just days after winning Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Royals” at the Grammy Awards.

1. Adidas collaborates with photographer Bella Howard and stylist Pandora Lennard for the re-launch of the iconic 1970s-era Stan Smith trainers. Given the recent wave of high-fashion sneakers, it’s no surprise that the photographs showcase the trainers’ feminine flair. 

2. Seems like we can’t get enough of “Drunk In Love”. Or Angel Haze’s freestyles.  Watch Angel Haze cover Beyoncé’s Grammy Awards opener, and while she does a wonderful job with Beyoncé’s notes, she absolutely slays Jay Z’s verses. 

3. The Laser Girls take your nail art to the next level with customizable 3D-printed nails.

PROFILE | Linder Sterling: Collage x Punk x Fashion x Performance Art

Inspired by the Dada movement and unhappy with 1976 North England society, artist Linder Sterling’s collages are made of cutouts from pornography and advertising—a visual commentary on identity, sexuality, fashion and society.

A well-known figure of Manchester’s punk and post-punk scene, Sterling’s provocative sleeve for Orgasm Addict by Buzzcocks in 1977 is one of her most famous works. Collage was crucial to punk because as Sterling puts it, “it was about making sense of the world. With collage, you make things wrong to make them right”.

She boasts editorial collaborations with Tim Walker, including one for Vogue Italia (with all the Prada S/S10), and a counter label S/HE with designer Richard Nicoll. Richard Nicoll’s pieces have also made appearances in her performance art.

And hey, she wore a meat dress during her performance in 1982 at The Haçienda with her post-punk band Ludus—well before Lady Gaga did it.

Linder Sterling is currently the ‘guinea pig’ for the new artist in residence at Tate St. Ives. Her incredible performance art piece, “The Ultimate Form”, takes place on February 8th and is a "living collage" of dance, music, fashion, fine arts and landscape.

We really love this artist, and her multi-disciplined body of work is just awe-inspiring.

DIGITAL CRAFTSMANSHIP | Mass Production: What It Meant Then And What It Means Now

Mass production is a staple in the world’s economy today, but its roots come from the burgeoning, early 20th century US auto industry.

In 1908, Henry Ford ushered in the modern world with his Model T, a cheap automobile that became known as “the people’s car”. His business model was to sell a cheap and uniform product and to keep up with demand, make more cars in a shorter amount of time.

To accelerate the mass production process, Ford implemented an assembly line system for the parts—modeled after the meat packing plant’s conveyor belt system.

Though Ford helped create the consumerist world, he grew uncomfortable with it in the 1920s. The 20s saw an evolving market that generated a new desire for variety and customization. And he viscerally hated the unions that rose after the Great Depression, only giving into the unions to avoid government intervention.

Of course, mass production has since become a global phenomenon. But unions are not, and not all governments are willing to support fair wages and working conditions.
