Here’s the full story. I’m afraid it won’t be very useful, sadly. I told a friend I was on the lookout for this show for a gift for someone special. He said he’d put the feelers out with various video nerds he knows.

A few months passed and I heard nothing so I forgot about it. About two weeks ago, a set of DVDs turned up in the mail and that’s how I came across them.

I made the gifsets from the DVDs.

This may be controversial to say this but I’ve often wondered if Cap would be as popular as he is if he wasn’t a gay character. He would then be reduced to a curmudgeonly middle aged man who becomes tender of heart as the show goes on and I don’t think people would be as enthusiastic as they are about him.

I think people identify with his story of having to hide their true self and I get that entirely. But sometimes it does seem as though he gets objectified and fetishised.

I admit that I began watching Ghosts because I saw this photo of Cap.

And was instantly attracted to him and intrigued by his costume and the way he looked. When I learned that it was actually Ben Willbond, I was shocked. Because when I initially saw him in 2011 when he was a tumblr darling all over this site, I looked him up to see what the fuss was and to me, he just looked like a basic looking white guy with an unusual nose. But, Captain was the reason why I began watching.

After I watched the show, he was instantly my favourite character and it was because he seemed deep and nuanced. I liked his moods, I liked his quirks, I liked how he felt he was the one in charge but really was a bit inept.

And now, as the show has ended, he still remains my favourite….BUT….you are correct. People don’t focus on any of the other characters, especially the women.

And that is very sad, as they bring so much life to the show. So often the characters outside of him get overlooked. I mean, as an example, in Series 5 Pat was the funniest part of it. People never talk about him or that. Humphrey got a lot of screentime in Series 5 and he gets neglected all the time. Mary had so much story in Series 4 and it doesn’t get talked about at all anymore.

So, to kind of bolster your initial take, I think it’s become that he’s so popular partly because people are attracted to Ben (and Cap in turn) and partly because they relate to him as a character, due to being part of the LGBTQ+ community.

I apologise for adding to this Cap love that has taken over, but for me, it’s simply because I enjoy his character as a whole. Not just facets of him.

Sorry for the long ramble….

controversial take but being a longtime ghosts fan over the past few months has just been watching the captain become increasingly more prevalent in tags and fan content to the point where almost no other character’s stories or personalities are explored and usually if they are, it’s in relation to the captain.

I’m gay, a lesbian, and the amount of fanbases I’ve seen fall to mostly straight women and become a whirlpool of one white, conventionally attractive gay man played by a straight man has been so disappointing. the captain is not the only character in ghosts. he is not the deepest or most tragic character in ghosts. it is a found family themed show. we, gay people, do not exist as tragic entertainment to be fetishised. the women in this show are rarely mentioned in comparison to the captain, Kitty had multiple scenes about her abusive sister, is implied to come from a horrific colonialist background and basically came out as asexual in season 5 and nobody talked about it, Mary died in a way that was so horrific they didn’t even show it on camera but havers had five minutes of screen time and he is everything now, apparently.

it’s to the point where you can’t escape it, no matter what tags related to the show you do or don’t follow. I’ve seen it before with the way the good omens fanbase changed from people who respected this incredible story criticising blind faith in religion with queer characters that inherently further that message into people calling them “uwu husbands” or whatever.

I’m not particularly angry, I’m just sad to see that the internet has turned into this again. I love the captain. I love ben, he’s a fantastic actor that I grew up admiring!!! but the captain is not the entire show and I think we need to think about why he takes up like. 85% of fan works.
