- “BEYOND BELIEF” ***An excerpt from “Ezekiel the Enlightened” by W.H. Oknows*** A trip outside of the city one Sunday in August led to revelations that rocked Ezekiel’s world. Long had he believed that he would be saved and all of his life would be charmed if he followed the doctrine to the letter...which he did. For Ezekiel was a believer. He believed in Signs and Symbols and Supplicancy and Sacrifice and Service. All of his life he stayed inside the lines and was driven by a desire for the purity of body, mind and soul and of course the sensation of superiority that his faith afforded him. He had, after all, been enlightened. Ezekiel was a good man at heart and each day battled the demons that attempted to infiltrate his purity, until one day in a moment of weakness, he fell. One small misdemeanour, a question in his mind that challenged his faith. The guilt was too heavy a burden to bear. To his mind he had failed entirely. As the car gently rolled to a stop, Ezekiel exited, walked towards the edge of the cliff and stepped into the void. The decent was short. Time only enough for the adrenaline to flood his body and create a mild euphoria; at last he would know his truth. The body hit the floor. Dust began to settled around the mangled form, resting atop of the slow moving blood peacefully oozing from the wounds. Gradually the flow stopped as the mixture formed a paste. The paste absorbed back into the ground, nourishing the earth. - “CINEMASCOPE” A series of lights could be seen in the sky; the same as stars but somehow different as if they were emanating their light at a different frequency just on the edge of human vision. The animals cowered and moved slowly, backing away to find cover, shackles up and teeth gnarled more in fear than aggression. Far off in the distance the faint sound of sirens could be heard through the eclipse like silence, a sign perhaps that there was still a modicum of order across the CinemaScope that is human existence. - “CINEMA FOR LIFE” ***WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT*** John left his seat for the 3rd time and relocated himself a little closer to the screen. The cinema was deserted and he was taking full advantage of this unusual freedom while he had the “Goddam Chance”. Settled, he light a joint and inhaled noisily holding the smoke inside his body until he had maxed out the buzz. Exhaling the smoke intermittently into the musty air these little smoke signals were like a sign to the projectionist to begin the film. Little did John know that the projectionist was already dead. John shouted “Start the Mother F*#king film won’t ya!?!” There was a silence. The lights went out and breathing could be heard at the door. John looked around but could see nothing through the blackness except the green haze of the exit sign. He probably should of headed that way. The air turned cold and a fog began to develop around his feet. Silver Ice fractals were forming around the bottom of the screen. - “FRIGHTNIGHT” “What a load of tosh! If you think that I’m falling for that superstitious mumbo-jumbo you got another thing coming.” said Clarke as he stood outside of the old abandoned picturedrome cinema. “Betcha to chicken to spend the night in there though ain’t ‘cha? With only the old projectionist to keep ya company...and perhaps “KILL YOU!” said Maisie. “Oh shut up Maisie there’s no such thing as an old projectionist; it’s just a stupid story.” Dismissed Clarke. “Well if it’s just a stupid story spend how do you explain all the missing people huh? The blood running down the screen when people were watching the movie? The sounds coming from the little door at the top of the staircase that leads nowhere? Tell me that huh!?!” Maisie’s eyes were big when spoke and her voice strained because she’d forgotten to take a breath. “Just stupid stories taken in by fools!” as he finished speaking Clarke made an audible swallow. The letter box on the side door to the theatre flapped in the wind. Both the children looked first at the door and then at each other. “Dare you to take a look inside now then” mocked Maisie. Clarke rolled his eyes, sighed and started walking over to the door. “Don’t!” said Maisie Clarke looked back, threw a sarcastic sneer and flapped his elbows to emulate a chicken. Clark carefully bent down so his eyes were inline with the letter box and began to lift the flap hesitantly. Squinting to navigate focus past dust beams and cobwebs he looked around as much as limitation of the hole would allow. “There nothing in here just an old counter and few posters on the wall. See I told you so!” With that Clarke looked towards the floor inside and saw fresh footprints in the dust. His eyes widened. The footprints headed towards the staircase. He dropped the flap and turned his neck to speak to Maisie. The small facial ticks on their faces like semaphore code, signalling their delight to one another. Mr Dawson or Mc D to his friends kept a straight face and steely eyes fixed on the clock in the warden’s office. The truth was you see, Mc D loved spending time in the hole. - “THE WHOLE TRUTH” They say that the Boxing ring is the loneliest place in the world; which may be true in part but there are other places. Cutting your first head of hair in a packed shop on a Saturday afternoon takes some beating. The wavering sound of your voice as you say “next” and not one person moves because they know that you are the new guy. “I’m waiting for Dave” says the next in line customer. It’s then the domino effect takes hold on the entire queue and you as the trainee barber retreat behind the reception desk to take cover as the whole world loses it confidence in you and for you there is no way back. Well there are two ways: option one the old gezzer with two hairs and a nit or the screaming kid requiring the octopus arms of a mother to keep him restrained...either way this is the baptism that you must endure to earn your place with the confidence and trust of a stranger. - “ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE TO REMIND ME” The awkward turn always caught me off guard and boy did that wall hurt; for the first 5 seconds at least. Three weeks I was in the hospital for in total. My bicycle? Beyond repair. A nurse walked in and glanced at the charts hanging at the end of the bed. “Good Morning Mr. Lemington” she said cheerfully. I couldn’t answer due to the rather large wires holding my jaw in place so I just blinked my eye lashes furiously not wanting to appear rude. Realising that I might not have any eyelashes, I made a guttural growl which I thought was quite sexy given my circumstances. The nurse looked up and delivered a sweet smile.
