These are the last movies we watched in the cinema a while ago. Top Gun was excellent! I was not that impressed with Jurassic World although I'm a big fan of the franchise. A couple of weeks ago my Mum, sister-in-law and I went to see Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. Oh my goodness was it good! Yes, it was cheese central, but I loved it! As the film went on, I just couldn’t stop myself from singing (and dancing) along to it! The Nutcracker

A couple of days ago, me and some of the girls from my university course went to the local cinema to watch the live opening night of The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House in London.

I have never watched any ballet before (even though i have had some training myself), and i was in absolute awe the whole way through.

The costumes for the Christmas party scene were slightly vague on the time period as there seemed to be a mix of Regency and Victorian styled clothes.

During this scene however, when the Drosselmeyer brings the toys to life, the clothing is much more fun and familiar for the audience.

As the ballet continued, and the storyline changed from traditional to more fantastical, the costumes also developed with the theme.

When the Nutcracker comes to life and defeats the Mouse King in order to stay a real man rather than a toy, the costumes become a lot more technical. There must have been much thought behind the head piece and the tail in particular so that the male dancer was still able to complete his role but look the part.

Furthermore, once the Nutcracker and Clara are together and dancing alone, you really notice Clara’s night dress, and to me, it lacked character. It was just much too plain considering she was playing one of the main roles, and the fact that the Nutcracker had such a colourful and detailed outfit next to her.

I also thought that the Sugar Plum Fairy costume wasn’t as good as it could have been. It was beautiful but i thought that it was hard to distinguish her from the other fairies.

However, one of my favourite dances in the ballet was the duet with the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince, and their solos were also stunning.

My absolute favourite dance however, was that of the Snowflakes. There were so many of them and they were in perfect unison with their feet, the arm movements, where they were looking etc. I also really liked their costumes and how they appeared floaty and moved in similar ways to how a snowflake would.

The most obvious costume of the whole ballet was that of the Drosselmeyer. The magician who made everything happen. Most of the costumes in the ballet were quite neutral colours so his stage presence was always so dominant with his bright turquoise waistcoat and cape and contrasting red socks.

I thought in all that the costumes were so well made, although if i were personally designing the costumes for The Nutcracker, there are definitely some things i would change. All in all, i absolutely loved the ballet and it has made me want to go to the Royal Opera House to see a live show.
