I remember certain things, what I was wearing; the yellow dashes in the street...

#1 Alabama, sweet home
State of music, state by state exploration of American music
Like a lot of states, Alabama is very well know for their rich collection of blues and country music. To celebrate their musicians, Alabama has a Music Hall of Fame conceived by the Muscle Shoals Music Association.
Born raised and buried in Alabama, Hank Williams is one of the best known American country singers. Often called the Hillbilly Shakespeare, he was a very talented singer and songwriter. Many regard him as the very first country superstar. He started playing guitar at age 8, by 13 he had his radio debut and formed his band Drifting Cowboys at 14. His peak year was 1950 where all of his songs charted. The only exclusions from that are the songs he released under the name Luke the Drifter and songs he made with his wife Audrey Williams. In the same year he had a bad spinal surgery which ultimately lead to his addiction to painkillers. His career was on a fast decline. The combination of his previous existing alcohol addiction and morphine resulted in a heart attack at the age of 29. He was officially pronounced dead on January 1, 1953. Continuing on his legacy, his son Hank Williams Jr. was introduced into Country Music Hall of Fame in 2020.
"Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight Praise the Lord I saw the light"
Lionel Richie was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1949. He mastered the formula for love ballads using many musical styles like blues, country and soul. When he was younger he was heavily inspired by church and gospel music. At one point he even considered becoming a priest. With a bachelor's degree in economics and many years of performing and writing music he finally signed with Motown label in 1974 with his band the Commodores. While in the band he proved himself as an amazing song writer, leading him to release his self titled solo album. The single Truly charted at number one. Next year he released Can't Slow Down featuring two of his most well known songs All Night Long and Hello. Today he is still an active musician. He has a fragrance line and a home decor line. He was on the Simpsons, Oprah, American Idol, American Housewife and Jeopardy. It is safe to say he keeps busy. At the age of 74 he is just as popular and just as youthful as he was in the 80s.
"And I know if you really care I will always be there"
The band Alabama was formed in 1969 in well, Alabama. They are the first band on my list being named after the state that they originated from. Fitting in the stereotype, it was formed by two cousins: Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry. Later they were joined by another cousin Jeff Cook. In the 1980s they had 27 number one hits. They combine traditional country with Southern rock and it results in music that just feels good. Their lyrics are often about the land that they grew up in. Despite a few breaks in their carrier they are still active today
"Well, somebody told us Wall Street fell But we were so poor that we couldn't tell"

There’s something so delightful about knowing that power rangers can apparently add and remove skirts from their costumes whenever they want!
