“She was a woman, after all. Living in a world created by men. And she had long known that assholes protect their own. They are faithful to no one but surprisingly protective of each other.”

4.5 ⭐️ TJR does it again with another amazing book! I loved Seven Husbands so much and this is a close contender. I love the time jumping from Mick and June to the siblings current lives. I don’t think she introduced a lot of characters for the party and at times it was hard to remember who they were and why they were important. I do think she has a great writing style and was able to easily switch between each chapters seamlessly without leaving you confused. I also love how she connects characters from each of her other books.
Ugh poor Junie she really just wanted someone to love and cherish her. Unfortunately she married Mick the prick :(. I just wish for all she said about loving her kids, her actions proved those words but they didn’t. I do like the parallel she created between Nina and June in regard to their husbands. I felt bad for Nina at time and felt her siblings didn’t fully understand the hardships she endured with her father and mother at such a young age. I felt Kit was relatable in wanting to be understood and seen for who she is and her ability to adapt. Her struggle with self discovery and acceptance is real. Nina was also relatable as a big people pleaser and her need for perfection and the stress she puts on her shoulders.
I liked the premise of Laura’s character but I’m not really sure what she added. Brandon gave Art from Challengers vibes. I also don’t like how public he made his apology to Nina to take him back. I do get why she fell in love with him tho she really just wanted someone to care for her, something uncomplicated and easy. I really really loved the relationship the sibling had it was so heartwarming. It was also great to see all the emotional and personal growth they had throughout the book. The resolution was just top tier.

Mood board 👻
This was a 3.5-3.75 ⭐️ for me! Gave major season 2 White Lotus vibes to me. As a horror book I think it did well with the creepy happenings in the house and how the town people reacted to it. I wouldn’t call this gothic horror per se but it did have atmospheric tones. Anna was for sure a scapegoat to her family and I felt bad for her a lot of the time. Some people feel like she is a bad person and I honestly think it’s mainly due to her refusal to react at times with her family. As someone who comes from a dysfunctional family I really resonated with Anna at times. I do think she could be a little rough around the edges but aren’t we all. I think this also highlights the unfairness of the relationship with her family and how they all sucked. I like the imagery of the bugs feasting off them because that’s what the house was doing and the entity. I also like how Anna was able to deal with the house and entity because of how her family treated her, she was used to being fed off of.
I liked the ending and resolution for Anna a lot. I’m glad she was able to make peace. I’m not sure I quite understand Christopher’s death but that’s ok. I also wish we got more on the villa and La Dama. I liked Justin he was a good dad and was nice to Anna. I was holding out hope for Benny but you can’t change some people especially when it’s easier to blame on others. Also her British blogger accent was terrible it gave Transatlantic mixed with southern (if you used the audio book lol). 🥴

Made a mood board for the book I most recently listened too! Review: This book is a solid 4.25 ⭐️ I listened to it as an audiobook and felt both narrators (Ms. Hope and Kitt) were both easy to listen too! It was a maze of twists and turns, full of DEAD ends and false pathways to the truth. It kept you guessing until the literal last chapter! I personally do not try to solve things while listening so even though I suspected certain things most of this caught me by surprise. This was my first Riley Sager novel and will not be my last. I think he has a very creative mind and the plot twists were 😚👌🏼. I love how interconnected the story was with past and present. It gave 1920's gilded age turned horror.
