Not sure if this really counts as an influence, but I’d say Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining would be good influence for your Bendy AU :]
Ooh yea! It’s got all the crazy stuff architecture-wise and the claustrophobia too! Sadly, despite loving what horror can do, I am the most scared person to ever exist in the whole wide world, so much so that it physically affects me. But I think if I set a proper time then I could totally do it (and then probably recover for a week). I’ve been wanting to watch it I just have to get ready for the horrors : )
I’m actually basing this au off something kind of like that, called BLINK. It’s a comic book about a woman who can’t remember her childhood because it was spent in some giant place she only has snippets of, and so she goes back to the seemingly quaint house that started it all in order to figure out what happened. I recommend it if you kind of wanna sit in your bed after it and look at the ceiling.
Anyways yea I’ll watch it when I have the time and brain space!

This’ll be the official design from now on also. This is most pure form of the little toon guy and all other depictions will probably be a bit wrong in some way. If you ever wanna draw him, this would personally be my go-to, but I’m fine with you drawing the other versions of him if you like them more!
Second, Detailed Reference Sheet for Bendy: 1925

(Image ID: A three-point turnaround for Bendy, as well as some of his more extreme, off-model expressions on the top right. Bendy’s au design has close-set eyes, a sharp, wide smile, a tail, and cloven feet with white spats over them. The extreme expressions on the top are Bendy’s face scrunched up seriously as he salutes, him wincing and laughing with his forked tongue flicking out, and him in utter shock with his jaw dropped. The text on the top left says “BENDY: Tombstone Picnic”. There’s text under it, but it’s mostly illegible. However, it seems to be greyer than everything else, and corrupting the image. End ID)
A small influx of new creatives joined Joey Drew Studios around 1925, which prompted Henry Stein to make a more in-detail reference sheet for others to Use. Us e

A while ago I found a documentary on Ub Iwerks, that was created, directed and produced by his grand daughter! Here are the links for parts 1-5, because pirating anything Disney related is like pulling teeth lmao
YOOO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DIRECTING ME TO THIS!!! The links don’t show on your ask, sadly, but I think I found the parts anyways! It looks like a really good watch.
I’ll put the links under the cut so that anyone who wants to see it can watch it themselves! Thanks again I’m very grateful!

idea for henry's motivations- he had some kind of disease but was taking "free" "medication" from joey (who was probably slowly turning him into a toon), which is why despite not liking joey, he still comes back. It's because he feels he owes Joey for "saving" him.
Honestly rad idea, for some reason it reminded me of Coco in that scene where Ernesto is poisoned. Again, I don’t think it could work in my au but I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Since I’ve gotten a lot of cool ideas but can’t totally use them, I’ll make a tag for these ideas so that other people can take inspiration off them if they want (# others ideas). Thanks again!

I’m dyslexic and I thought the au was called “bendy in situations” for literally so long
That’s fair. If I didn’t write the name myself I would’ve thought it was called Bendy’s intuition or nation for a solid few weeks, maybe a month.

(Image ID: A digital paper sign with Bendy frowning on it. He says, “If your peers can’t help but draw me ODD, report them to help this epidemic stop for good!” Under it, text says, “What is ODD? Odd is: Extremely distorted anatomy, Humanoid features, Ink-splosions (ink explosions) Missing eyes, and Text where there shouldn’t be. Any of these things fit a friend? Tell us! - HR”. End ID)
One of a few posters recovered from Joey Drew Studios about odd drawings. It seemed to be a real problem, as shown by celluloids with these exact features mentioned.

lol ink vampires
wait what if henry slowly transforms into a toon over the course of the game, because of ink creatures constantly trying to drink his blood and him trying to make a transfusion with ink as a last resort so he doesn't die?
2. again with the au ideas- ages ago I was wondering how JD studios would get away with such a massive and famous place being shut down, with so many people missing, yet there being seemingly very little police investigation to come out of it. I came to the concept that JDS used an anthrax outbreak as a cover for what was really going on. Anthrax is super scary and will literally cause government workers to burn any infected properties down in secret if they find it, according to some youtube comments. Some of the symptoms include the infected wound turning black... like ink.
And it's super hard to get rid of, super infectious and has a super high mortality rate. AKA, it's the perfect alibi to explain why a bunch of people had to be quarantined, died, and why the area is permanently off limits.
You people are just giving me great ideas?? What did I do to deserve this? Thank you?? I’m just getting sent people’s babies.
1. Henry already is half toon for all of the game, he just has no idea until Chapter 4 really. I’d like to imagine any sort of transfusion or poisoning was done before the game, before he left and without him knowing. Probably by Joey, cause Joey’s like that.
2. Anthrax is a lovely idea! Though, everyone in JDS has gone missing, so it would make more in my au that the police are the one that cover it up with anthrax. I’ll totally research this topic. Thank you again!

(A timeline of events from an outsider’s perspective, based on @bendyredrawn ‘s very own timeline! In this world, JDS’s growth is much like Fleischer Studios, with some things from Disney.)
1919 - Drew-Stein Studios is created by Joey Drew and Henry Stein. They also release their first short, “Little Devil Darlin'“. It stars a misunderstood little imp that tries to keep a job in turning people to sin. It becomes a hit with minority groups, such as immigrants, as escapism from the riots of the time, and conservative whites of New York find it blasphemous.
1920 - “Imp from the Inkwell“ Is released. In this story, the imp, now named Bendy, gets into antics with a live action Henry Stein. The production of short comics also start, introducing an unnamed hellhound into the picture.
1922 - More cartoons and comics are made. Notably, Boris makes his entrance in “Boorish Beasts”. He is Bendy’s acquaintance and foil, being quiet and calculative, but warm-hearted.
1925 - The Bendy film “Tombstone Picnic” makes a breakthrough by becoming the first ever animated “talkie” through vitaphone. The titular character is voiced by none other than Joey himself. Drew-Stein Studios hits the top of the charts for animation in America.
1926 - Another series, Telltale Trio, is introduced into the catalogue. It is not focused on the well-known imp from hell, but instead a trio of ghastly animals haunting a small town. Drew-Stein Studios changes its name to Joey Drew Studios.
1927-1930 - Countless other comics and talkies are released. The idea of angels are also introduced to the Bendy series. JDS grows exponentially in young employees during the start of the Great Depression.
1932-1933 - One year of mostly comics. Rumors go around that JDS is buying out a new studio in the Brooklyn area to house all its new departments. Joey Drew mentions big things are coming, but keeps it a surprise.
1933 - Construction finishes on the new studio and production moves in. Several female singers, musicians, and foley artists are also hired around this time. Alice Angel is introduced: a trigger-happy messenger that’s ended up in Hell. This also marks the year of JDS’s first color film.
1934 - With the addition of the Hays code, JDS holds back on all the violence, and produces less Bendy cartoons. Strangely enough, its reputation and income is barely effected. Alice Angel becomes the darling of the show around this time.
1936 - JDS releases a feature-length on the return of Bendy. It becomes extremely popular. But at the same time an endemic of sickness spreads throughout New York for a few days. There are also reports of some theatres receiving completely corrupted canisters that have whole minutes blacked out, melting, or incomprehensible.
1937- Henry Stein leaves the company because of “creative differences”. The studio’s growth comes to a halt.
1937-1940 - Production slows on more Bendy cartoons, instead focusing on other series again. Employees start protesting for better treatment outside the studio.
1940-1943 - Employees of the studio start to go missing, along with other employees leaving in droves. All report sickness.
1944-1945 - The studio, again, advertises a new breakthrough. A few more cartoons come out, all focusing on Bendy. People near the studio report cold chills and auditory hallucinations for months upon end.
1946 - After a mass plunge into hysteria from people in the near vicinity of JDS for 3 hours, The studio goes completely silent. All people employed go missing. Many investigations are taken out under these disappearances, but all become cold cases. People that go in don’t come out. Eventually, the studio is demolished.
1963 - New animation released. Henry is told by Joey to record the old studio. Game events.

FATHOM 40 - It might look empty, but I assure you it’s full of life!
(Image ID: Digital concept art of an underground level of BATIM, chapter 2. A vast, wooden room is framed in the dull, damp entrance of a mine shaft held up by wooden pillars and planks. The sign above it says, “STORAGE, 40 FATHOMS”. Henry stands at its maw. Inside is what looks like an infinite plane of floorboards, with fake wooden trees close and a carousel in the distance, almost being swallowed up by the darkness. Bright, spherical lights, like ones you might see in a big top, line the high ceiling. They stop only at the middle, where an upside-down canyon is. Splotches of ink are on every piece. A few more lights are seen in the shadowed reaches of this world. End ID.)
An idea for a mix of Bertrum’s Bendyland and other scrapped material, culminating in one big-ass room. I imagine this is the first appearance of the searches and lost ones (or as I’m calling them now, toonlikes!).

(Image ID: Image 1: A rubberhose style monotone Joey Drew. There is one big fullbody of him on the left and three smaller busts of him on the right, On the left, he’s tapping his foot, swooping down, and putting his right arm up with a big smile on his face. He says out of a big speech bubble, “Trust in the Basin!”. Notably, there is ink obscuring his left eye and that side of his face, along with ink dripping down the top of his suit vest. He also wears a big, white tie, and large toon shoes. A pointed tail twists behind him. On the top right is him with his teeth open, staring at the camera eerily. On the middle right is him with an exaggerated frown, and a hand on his cheek. On the bottom right is him at a 3’4ths view with his normal smile. A little panel on the left shows his mouth open in for an L sound, an O sound, and his mouth closed for a M sound. At the bottom of this, it says “Only times when teeth don’t show”. The background has “666” on it. Image 2: Everything is the same, except Joey is now a black shadow. The only things still present besides his silhouette are his white teeth and bowtie, and his eye on the top right picture. End ID)
Memory Joey aka the bastard shadow on the walls! I imagine he has to be activated in order for you to progress the game in, again, Chapter 5, but you can just as easily turn off any light source he’s over and shut him up. The second form is what he usually shows up as, I’m not exactly sure where the first fits in but it was fun to make nevertheless.
As stated before, this is more the memory of him. The real Joey is long gone. He’s nothing like his actual self, in both personality and form, but there are some things that are distinctly Joey about him. His ambition, for one, and his animation (literally) for another.
(Fun fact, the background is taken from a film called “SKYSCRAPER” CONSTRUCTION OF 666 5TH AVE. NEW YORK CITY”)

what would happen if the ink creatures tasted humann blood?
This ain’t set in stone but so far this is what I have:
All individual ink creatures are made up of tampered ink, meaning blood transfigured into a new type of ink. Tasting completely pure human blood is sort of like tasting ambrosia to them. Most of them will go crazy for it, so it’s also show of status when you can reserve yourself in the face of it.
The opposite of human blood, at least for them, is completely pure untampered ink. This sort of ink (if there’s enough of it) can instantly unwind an ink creature’s conscious and turn them to a pile of goo to be reabsorbed into the black depths. The only ink creature that can live in untampered ink is the Ink Demon, who is made from a unhappy hybrid of untampered and tampered ink.

(Image ID: three sketches of au Sammy Lawrence. On the far left, he’s slouched over looking down, showing his disfigured Bendy mask. On the top right is a shot of his head, showing an inhumanely large grin filled with big teeth. On the bottom right is him holding up a broken glass with what seems to be ink in it. End ID)
A more toonish Sammy. Still trying to figure out a nice place between being completely decked out in “jewelry” and still being readable. I also want him to look regal in a dumpster way, if you get what I mean.

Good news everyone! Per your votes, we will be keeping the big hole under Joey Drew Studios!
Joey Drew and his studio will now experience the horrors of the big evil hole following this development!
Thank you for your participation.
Hey y’all I don’t live in the New York area but if there were to be, say, a giant hole under Brooklyn many many feet down, do you think people would notice or is it safe to say it could be mostly undiscovered? (I PROMISE THIS IS NOT RELATED TO EVENTS THAT HAVE HAPPENED RECENTLY I’VE JUST BEEN EXPANDING THIS PART OF THE STORY AT A REALLY BAD TIME)
Here is a diagram:
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A diagram of what is under Joey Drew Studios. Just under a subway line is a twisting cave that eventually leads into an extremely large basin. End ID)
Thank you all and sorry I know nothing about the East Coast

Sheep Henry! Sheepry? I got a solid design for him in Chapter 5 now, even though he’s not so solid himself. I think it would be fun to add a sanity meter to this chapter for the sole purpose of making people more anxious.
If you have stupid ideas for his name then please share them with me because it feels important I come up with a stupid name for him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I gave him an artfight page! I plan to do this with a few more guys like Sammy and maybe the Ink Demon. Go check him out if you have it!
