Load shedding, it’s where the national energy company doesn’t have the capacity to manage the power to the grids so they shut certain areas off during the day to mitigate the risk of a full outage. I can’t imagine how it would be to plan a business around that but people like Rise do it all the time. . . . The people in South Africa are generally resilient because they have to be. When your local and even national government are a hindrance to your business you get around it. Buying generators setting different times to work, etc. . Rise employs women from the local neighborhood and they sew together work uniforms and now clothing for all. I must say the food in South Africa was delicious in a surprising way. No matter where we went the food was simply fantastic and generally made to order. You can tell most things were farm to table and locally sourced. Growing up with two farm parents that’s what I expect from the food I eat. The croc looks a little weird but that is a croc the size of an average teddy bear and it entirely made of beads on the outside. This was made by all women who help their families by making these small dolls to sell and provide extra income for their families. The artists range to about 300 in total and even @beyonce took notice. What a great story of empowering women to affect change. What I always find fascinating about traveling is figuring out what people value most out of life. When people think about the US, naturally they think we are about money because of how much we tend to work compared to the rest of the world. However, do we really like the system that we have set up? . . I usually can get a vibe from a place by art and especially streetart in a new country. I’m a creative at heart so I always love it when I see people doing something that doesn’t necessarily make them a ton of cash but they truly enjoy it. Music, photography, and film tend to be that for me since it’s something I can kind of control. People liking your work is another story, I think for me I just do it as an outlet and if someone enjoys it fantastic. If you don’t, that’s cool too ;) . . Our group had the opportunity to meet an amazing woman who is helping the country everyday. Pick and pay is a major grocery store in South Africa and has expanded into Nigeria and Botswana as well. However, they are not only known for taking care of their employees but also small business owners through micro loans. The family who started Pick and pay have being doing right by South Africans for decades. . Mr Ackerman, the founder, tested the apartheid government everyday by hiring black employees and seeing how far they could break the law of the current regime. These acts of civil disobedience irked the government and empowered the employees simultaneously because someone was looking out for them. . Mrs Ackerman hired the first black cashier of the company. When she started not a single soul stepped into her register lane. As she was staring at the other cashier with the long line she felt hopeless, but Mrs Ackerman would not let this deter her motivation for hiring the young woman. . She saw what was happening and forced the other cashier at the store to take an early lunch break, which forced everyone over to the other register. Small acts like this through time eventually led to the end of apartheid. . I was very humbled to have met a family and business that practices “tikkun olam “ which means to repair the world 🌎 in hebrew. I can only hope to make an impact the way this family and organization have moving forward. Leadership is about building something for everyone where all boats rise together.
