IT’S PRIMETIME!

I have been writing songs ever since I can remember. As a little girl, melodies would always creep into my head. I have no idea how, but they would just come. It was strange that even when I was young, I was writing love songs, despite not having a real idea as to what love was. I hadn’t even been in a relationship, or had my heart broken! The lyrics would just regurgitate onto the page. I wouldn’t show anyone though because I was so shy and thought they weren’t ever any good.

I don’t even know where the emotion came from when delivering such powerful love songs as a child. I would sing like I really felt it, even bring adults to tears every time I performed. I know now that it wasn’t the love that I was singing about in these songs at the time, but the emotion that I felt from these artists that I just naturally absorbed and delivered.

Now that I am in my own relationship I truly know what these artists were singing about. I’m expressing myself on a different level.

“Primetime” by Janelle Monáe feat. Miguel was a natural choice for me. The way this song was written is the initial reason why I chose it. The lyric itself is simple but rhymed so intelligently and strategically where the melodies don’t sound predictable/generic. There is no need for fancy words here. It’s all in the melody, it does all the talking.

It has the perfect tempo, Slow enough to get to get you in “the mood” but also still has a groove that naturally moves the body to sway. In my opinion it is the go to romantic slow jam of our generation.

The song is Mesmerising, with a psychedelic soul touch. That guitar solo is the perfect bridge to climax and ends so beautifully with a fade out of the chorus.

The writers of this song, Janelle Monáe, Roman Gian Arthur Irvin, Nathaniel Irvin III, Charles Joseph II, couldn’t have picked a better singer/songwriter than Miguel to team up and write a modern classic. It sounds as if the song inevitably wrote itself amongst their collaboration.

This song must be performed as a duet at all times! Janelle on the fist verse, Miguel on the second, then uniting together in the chorus. It wouldn’t have the same impact without this. I knew I needed to pick someone really special to help do this song some justice, it needs that man’s touch, a sensitive and soulful vocal, and what better person to sing it with than the oh so talented, Tino Levi.
