"Drive All Night" by Sharon Van Etten // Originally by Bruce Springsteen

This is sort of a perfect cover. Bruce Springsteen's “Drive All Night” is already a heartaching beauty, but stripped down to just a piano and vocals - Sharon Van Etten manages to match (or even surpass) the power of the original. As part of the AV Club’s “Pioneering” series, Van Etten (a New Jersey native) picked a perfect song for her style and she does a tremendous job making it her own.

"Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley cover)" by Amen Dunes // Cowboy Worship EP (Out 1.21.15 via Sacred Bones)

Oh, the many covers of Tim Buckley's brilliant, “Song to the Siren”. It's easy to judge them all based against the haunting, breathtaking version from This Mortal Coil (as sung by Elizabeth Fraser), as opposed to Buckley’s original. Truth be told, judging any of the dozens of covers based on either of those versions is setting them up for defeat. Or maybe not. Hearing Damon McMahon’s voice crest and fall within the confines of the stunning guitar work contained on this cover by Amen Dunes, makes me think it’s time to add a third to that list of peaks. Quite honestly, for me-  he does everything right. His warbled, haunted voice closer to Buckley’s wild folk singer delivery, than most - but somehow, the ghostly folk guitars manage to call to mind the This Mortal Coil version without shifting into dreamy synth ambient soundscapes. The quietly restrained production is something else as well. Just enough distance on the vocals to sound like they originated in a dream you barely remember, but the power and intimacy immediately snapping you back to the reality - you are hearing something incredibly special.
