BSD Theory: What is Dazai?
With the release of Storm Bringer, Asagiri has given us a lot more insight into the nature of abilities, their limits, how they interact with one another, and the creation of singularities. And although Dazai wasn’t the main focus of the story, it may have revealed a lot more about him than it would seem at first glance. More specifically: that the name of his ability, “No Longer Human”, may be a lot more literal than we previously thought.
Spoilers for Storm Bringer, 55 Minutes, and Dead Apple under the cut

something about Dazai being comfortable enough around Chuuya to be vulnerable and let him see his genuine reactions (especially his genuine shock) as he processes out loud is SO SO IMPORTANT TO ME
Tumblr media
plus Chuuya not being shocked to see the genius at work tells us this isn’t the first time he’s seen Dazai actively figuring things out in real time…
Tumblr media
the way Chuuya knows Dazai's nervous habits— noticing that Dazai is worried, and subtly checking on him. the way Dazai drops his facade in favor of putting all of his focus into the mental game at hand is such an obvious sign of trust & closeness for someone like Dazai, whose facade is his main form of defense
Tumblr media
how they interact with each other in the downtimes when there’s nobody's watching…
all i can think is, look how far they’ve come since they were 16 when Dazai couldn’t trust anyone with his plans. how even now, Dazai is always putting up his “all according to plan” front, even with the agency. how Chuuya is the one person we’ve seen him truly drop the mask around, and Chuuya doesn’t bat an eye. even their banter is ongoing, but subdued.
soukoku and their subtle displays of intimacy will be the death of me 💔

I need Meursault to be representative of skk's dynamic as partners. Dazai being childish and annoying. Chuuya being unhelpful unless necessary. The both of them toeing the line between scarily efficient and absolutely useless. This is fantastic.

I love how the in canon stuff we learn about Dazai is so unhinged while most Dazai headcanons are so tame
Dazai headcanons: Dazai always sleeps with a weighted blanket
Dazai in canon: Rolls around on the floor like a hotdog when he's trying to think

Remember that in this scene Dazai "lives on canned crab and whiskey" Osamu has a three gunshot wounds and a broken leg while Chuuya "the strongest ability user" Nakahara is just sitting there watching
Tumblr media
And the funniest part is every single one of those injuries was inflicted by Chuuya and most of them weren't even part of the plan

I just know Vox would piss himself in anger if he saw how bothered Alastor gets with Lucifer. Alastor barley gives Vox the time of day. He treats him at best as a minor annoyance, and at worst another petty drama for Alastor to get entertainment from. Oh, but with Lucifer? Lucy gets genuine malicious cussing and a song that doesn't end with Alastor as the clear winner, hell, a song that's a real back and forth argument rather than in Stayed Gone what were mostly Mean Girls style insults from Alastor. Alastor and Lucifer get in each other's face and push each other around. Vox would be sobbing desperately on the floor in the fetal position for 1/4 of that type of attention from Alastor.

If I had a nickel for every time Amazon prime video released an original show about heaven/hell dynamics with a queer couple composed of a demon/angel I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s interesting that it’s happened twice

Did anyone notice that in episode 61 the airport scenes in Yokohama were happening around twilight and the prison scenes in France at night?
France is seven hours behind Japan. Since Bram had control of the vampires during the prison scene, this means that it is happening after whatever is going on in Yokohama. After the “2 hours later”.
Since the vampires weren’t released by that point, I think it is safe to say that our Akutagawa is still a vampire, so the Ryuunosuke knight-in-shining-armor Akutagawa should be from an alternate universe for sure. Also, Ranpo and Bram are still alive as well :)) (so probably everyone else as well)

I love how this was just a little theater performance for soukoku. Dazai’s dramatic acting once he “realized” Chuuya was there. Chuuya’s vampire noises. Dazai’s overdramatic speech about memories… the long pause before the cheerfully fake goodbye. Dazai’s annoyed look when Fyodor was talking shit about his and chuuya’s bond (he probably felt so smug on the inside). Dazai’s other speech about the power of friendship and their fate that was completely unnecessary because he knew that Chuuya wasn’t actually possessed. Chuuya fake shooting Dazai in the head, which they have extensively trained for in the past. Their commitment to the bit is everything

while i do prefer believing that dazai only realised chuuya was conscious after the elevator fall, it would be really funny if he heard him go hËYIAÃh and was like yep that's chuuya

Some people seem surprised that Chuuya managed to fool Fyodor about being a vampire for less than 30 minutes, but you gotta remember that when he and Dazai first met, Chuuya succesfully hid that he was Arahabaki for two or three days, all while Dazai was specifically investigating Arahabaki.
Chuuya has always been an extremely good liar, and he is kryptonite to people like Fyodor or Dazai (or at least Fifteen's Dazai, he learned from that experience) because he looks brash and impulsive and ""simple"", but actually Chuuya has been lying about who he is for most of his life, and nobody knows how to be a mindless monster better than him.
