Later — A Poem by me

“Later.” you said,

as you rode off on a bike that isn’t yours.

“Arrogant.” I said,

wondering how someone could be so sure of themself, so disrespectful.

“Later.” you said,

hiding your pale blue eyes behind my sunglasses.

“I am relaxed.” I said,

suddenly finding myself in a constant need of your touch.

“Later.” you said,

as you spun her around instead of me.

“I’ll come in a second.” I said,

giving myself if only another second to watch you twirl someone else around and imagine if it was me.

“Later.” you said,

and you rose to your feet as if what we’ve done hasn’t sparked the fire that I see in your eyes.

“Am I offending you?” I said,

feeling my life had been forever changed by even a second of having you near me.

“Later.” you said,

as you slipped out of my sheets, the moon giving you an almost iridscent glow.

“Elio.” I said,

calling you by my own name and letting you into who I was.

“Later.” you said,

trying not to upset me as this all hit me in one swift punch to the chest.

“I don’t want you to go.” I said,

with tears rolling down my cheeks and your hands in my hair.

“Later.” you said one last time,

boarding the train knowing that a piece of you was with me in the form of your shirt on my back.

And this time I am speechless.

For that train took you,

and with you,

you held my life,

my love,

my words,

and all the ‘Later’s’ that I’ve come to love just as much as I love you.

If only I had more time to tell you that.

So all I can say is a single

“Later.”

and hope that all those ‘Later’s’

are in fact a promise of Later.
