I'm an American national married to a German citizen and living in southwestern Germany. I am also a Jew who is the grandchild of four Holocaust survivors. I work for a local school as a teacher and afterschool helper.

In both the town I live in and the town I work in, there are remnants of Jewish life from before the Holocaust, but it is highly likely that I am the only Jew to set foot in either town in the present day.

Tomorrow is October 7th, 2024.

So what am I doing?

Tomorrow, I am bringing a few hundred honeycake muffins to work. They were made using my grandmother's recipe. I will be sharing them with my students and the rest of the school, for a sweet new year for them.

A recipe that the Nazis did their best to wipe out...

being shared by a Jewish teacher in a German school...

on the anniversary of the largest single massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

Because we Are Still Here, and we will dance again. We shall share food, and kindness, and traditions, again.

The world: “Oh shut up already with that crap!”

The UN six months later: “Um, this is awkward. Yea, so about that…”

- Israel: “Stop lying about us and the made up casualty numbers in Gaza! We did not kill tens of thousands of innocent people!”

The world: “Oh shut up, you genocidal maniacs!”

The UN six months later: “Um, so yea, about that… Pardon us while we quietly reduce the number we previously reported…”

- Israel: “Hamas operates from within civilian infrastructure and uses human shields.”

The world: “Oh shut up already with those lies…”

The UN six months later: “So, there may have been some instances of Hamas using UNRWA schools to attack Israel.”

- Israel: “Hamas committed horrible crimes against humanity on 10/7 including violent sex crimes against innocent women and children.”

The world: “Yea, right. Show me evidence.”

The global press six months later: “So yea, there seems to be overwhelming evidence that Hamas did indeed commit those crimes.”

- Israel: Hamas steals foreign aid to build highly sophisticated terror tunnels instead of feeding the people of Gaza!”

The world: “Again with those tunnel conspiracies?”

The media six months later: “Ok, those are some serious tunnels!”

Israel doesn’t make stuff up. If Israel says it, nine and a half out of ten times, it’s 100% accurate. If Israel reports something that turns out to be anything but 100% accurate, it’ll be the first to admit and apologize. 

When Israel says something, you can rest assured that it’s true. 

Israel’s enemies, on the other hand. Want to know when they lie? When they open their mouths. 

This tunnel to and from Egypt was discovered this week in Gaza. 

“Egypt didn’t know.”

Yea, ok.

There are no words. Hizbollah had fired hundreds of rockets at Israel.

Many of them hit schools and playgrounds (which had been evacuated) or narrowly missed hitting populated places

One hit a family car a few weeks ago, incinerating the parents of three.

This past Saturday - a Hizbollah rocket hit a soccer field full of children. Twelve children were killed.

One was considered "missing" for a whole day until they found enough of his remains to realize that he didn't just wander off.

There were no headlines. After all, Hizbollah claims they didn't fire the rocket, and we MUST give equal consideration to both the Jewish state and their Nazi murderous enemies. The EU and the UN woke up to call for 'restraint'. The United States is concerned about an all-out war. If you ask Israelis, they'll tell you we're at an all-out war. Israel is being attacked with rockets and drones from all sides. Tens of thousands have been evicted from their homes, and the international community can only talk of a "deal" which sounds exactly like the "deal" we had beforehand.

It sounds as if nobody really cares when Israel is attacked and when Israelis are killed.

They only care when Israel promises to act against it.
