cuddles [ let's say he had a nightmare and thought she was maria ;o; ]
Curled up and tucked underneath a hallow desk, Heather hid from unwanted amalgamations of horror. She wasn't keen on sleep, red rings around her eyes could attest, but she had her tiny little companion, although formidable force on his own, Heather's protective nature unfurl, and feigned exhaustion so he could rest.
Within their safe hold, her thoughts wandered and soon would come to regret. They strayed from the drone emitting from the light above and the ominous creaks in the corridor outside the principal's office. Once she did unto Claudia the same she did unto Daddy, what would she do then? Where would she go? She was an orphan girl with a shitty spending habit and a part time at her local Happy Burger.
A dawning realization crept up on her like a finger down her spine.
Would Shadow disappear as well? She bit her lip, anxious.
Truthfully, she didn't want to part ways. A selfish part, a childish part, wanted Shadow to stay with her forever until Heather was too old to carry the weight of her bones.
But he wasn't a stray dog to keep, and she felt guilty for wanting to snatch him away from his family. It wouldn't be fair. It would be cruel even if it did hurt like a fucking bitch.
The mere thought of it stung her eyes and tightened her throat.
A murmur drew her eyes around until they fell on him. He pressed into her, unbeknownst to her, seeking someone she was not, but her eyes softened, and her heart bled as sadness brimmed.
Shadow....her mind crooned, and her hands reached for him.
Affection flourished within her chest, and ugliness squirmed in her stomach like a parasite. She wanted to keep him, but she couldn't. Bitterness rose in her throat. Little girls like her couldn't get happy endings, nor could they stay with their knights in shining armor.
Wrapping her arms around him, she brought him close. Tears blurred her vision, and she roughly smeared them away with her wrist. She didn't want to confess why she had been crying nor give him a reason to worry.
Instead, Heather curled up underneath the hallowed desk, kissed him between his eyes, and felt her heart break for the second time.
